Prospectus Hit and Run: Building an MVP Predictor

34

Jay Jaffe

The off-season awards are cause for sound and fury, but what if past picks signify something about who will win?

As the recent scrum between supporters of the candidacies of Joe Mauer and Mark Teixeira reminds us, nearly every Most Valuable Player Award is capable of producing controversy. Not only do the voters from the Baseball Writers Association of America rarely elect the player who, via some objective formula, is worth the most wins to his team, they appear to shift their standards from year to year, instead constructing narratives to fit whatever loosely-gathered facts are at hand. Particularly in recent years, defensive value is often minimized or entirely ignored in favor of heavy hitters with big Triple Crown stats, almost invariably from successful teams.

Prospectus Today: The Tool of Ignorance

70

Joe Sheehan

While the ballot box can be used for good, that doesn't mean all votes were equally valuable.

There's a rising favorite in the AL Central, as our experts weigh in on everything from division winners to Matsuzaka's line.

Our annual predictions arrive this year as our Hope and Faith series comes to an end. While the beauty of spring training is that every team can think it has a chance, somebody has to take the losses. For today, we concentrate on the division standings and the major player awards (MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year) in the American League. Tomorrow we'll conclude with the National League predictions, along with the staff picks for the World Series.

Prospectus Today: The Election

0

Joe Sheehan

Bruce Sutter is the newest member of the Hall of Fame, an honor that stems more from a quirk in the process than from any evaluation of his career.

It's not fun writing that a guy shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. It's much easier to write that someone does deserve an honor, which is just one reason why most players see gradual rises in their vote counts over time. It's more enjoyable to talk about what a player's accomplishments were, what positive memories he created, rather than objectively compare him to his peers and to established standards. Because of this, much of the coverage of Sutter's election ignored his short career and his clear inferiority to another reliever on the ballot, and continued exaggerating his role in the use of the split-fingered fastball and the development of the closer position.
