Baseball Therapy: Are Starters Motivated by Wins?

8

Russell A. Carleton

The win might be a silly statistic, but does it affect pitchers' performance?

On Monday’s edition of MLB Now, anchor Brian Kenny once again made the case against using wins as a measure of pitcher quality. Citing recent games such as Matt Harvey’s brilliant nine-inning, one-hit no-decision, he argued that the win is an overrated statistic that doesn’t do a good job of describing the pitcher’s performance. After Kenny’s presentation, former pitcher Al Leiter came out to give a rebuttal. Leiter had an interesting take on the issue. He said that Kenny wasn’t respecting the human element of the game, and he suggested that the win statistic might actually make starters perform a little better in some key situations.

Michael Pineda's labrum tear doesn't bode well for his future, but it's not the death sentence it used to be.

On Wednesday, the Yankees revealed that Michael Pineda had suffered a torn labrum, a devastating turn of events both for the 23-year-old righty and for the team that acquired him from the Mariners for top prospect Jesus Montero back in January. Pineda will miss the entire season and part of 2013, thinning the Yankees' surplus of starting pitching—and underscoring the fact that you can never have too much—while raising the question of whether they will ever get much value out of him.

Prospectus Hit and Run: Bronx Cheers for Vazquez

8

Jay Jaffe

Already a target for Yankees fans, it's too early to write Javier Vazquez off.

At Javier Vazquez's first home start this season, fans wasted little time before booing the struggling Yankees starter, who'd been rocked in his 2010 debut at Tampa Bay and was off to another shaky start. By the time the boos rained down during Saturday's outing as Vazquez surrendered three homers, seven hits, and five runs in three-plus innings against the light-hitting White Sox, you could hardly blame them.

It's an all-pitching edition of Prospectus Notebook, as we take a closer look at the Marlins' rotation, the Angels' bullpen, and Mets ace Pedro Martinez.

IP ERA K/9 WHIP OPS VORP Starters 347.2 3.26 7.02 1.27 .670 83.1 Relievers 149.1 4.22 6.18 1.49 .763 10.0* *Accumulated in a little less than half the innings pitched Can the rotation realistically be that good going forward? Dontrelle Willis is a fine young pitcher, but if he maintained anything close to his 2.13 ERA his 2005 would end up ranking in the top 10-15 pitcher-seasons since 1993. A.J. Burnett and Josh Beckett are both outplaying their 75th percentile PECOTA projections, and they're doing so by a good margin. All three should expect some regression to the mean, but assuming Burnett's elbow pain isn't a serious problem they should all continue to be top starters. One through three, the Marlins can match up with any other rotation in baseball.

The Internet has spoken. Your choices for this year's Internet Baseball Awards.

It's time to announce the winners of the tenth annual Internet Baseball Awards. More than 2,000 cyberspace baseball fans--a new record--participated in this effort to select the baseball players whose 2001 seasons were most deserving of honors.

This year marks not only our tenth year of balloting (we started in 1991, but sat out the 1994 season in protest of baseball's rude behavior), but also our fifth year of Web balloting. A few of our readers probably remember the good old days of e-mail ballots (as we remember all the fun it was counting ballots by hand), but most of you have been treated only to the extraordinarily comprehensive user-friendly Web ballots designed by BP's Webmaster, Dave Pease. Our thanks go to Dave, who puts in a ton of work to make this process go smoothly.
