Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week Four

14

Paul Sporer

Paul tells you which starters are worth using and which ones to avoid in your fantasy leagues this week.

Welcome to the Weekly Pitching Planner. Each week I will cover the pitchers are who slated to make two starts and help you decide who you should start and who you should sit. Sometimes guys will be in the “consider” where they might have one good start, but a second tough one and then your league settings might determine whether or not you should go forward with him. The pitchers will be split by league then by categories:

Auto-Starts – These are your surefire fantasy aces. You paid a handsome sum for them either with an early draft pick or high dollar auction bid so you’re starting them anywhere, anytime. Guys can emerge onto or fall off of this list as the season evolves. There won’t be many – if any – notes associated with these groupings each week. We are starting them automatically so why do I need to expound on how awesome they are and will be in the coming week?

Paul and Jason take you from Homer Bailey to A.J. Griffin, with 38 other pitchers in between.

The Baseball Prospectus fantasy team has been rolling out its positional rankings over the past couple of weeks, and this edition concludes the process. Each team member assigned to cover a position will create an initial top 15 (more for outfielders and starting pitchers) on his own. He will then send that list to the rest of the team for discussion, at which point we will debate the rankings, both in terms of each player’s specific placement and the merits on which he was included in the top 15. This back-and-forth debate will yield the final list, which will be presented by the original author with notes on the pertinent players. We encourage you to bring your opinions into the fray using the comment section below.

Here are the previous rankings lists:

Weekly Planner: Week 25

1

Paul Sporer

Rotations are in serious flux as teams juggle starters down the stretch, but Paul helps make sense of it all in this week's Planner.

Some teams are running six-man rotations and every team seemingly has their rotation in flux, but we’ll try to iron out the two-start pitchers for next week as we inch closer and closer to wrapping up yet another 162.

Value Picks: Starting Pitching for 9/7/12

1

Paul Sporer

Paul looks at Andrew Werner and A.J. Griffin as potential difference-makers in fantasy leagues down the homestretch.

Can you believe we officially have less than a month of the regular season left? That depresses me. I like football just fin; I just love baseball two billion times more. Okay, chin up, no need for tears. We’ve still got a month plus the playoffs, which are shaping up to be fantastic. More importantly, you have got your fantasy playoffs (or at least a stretch run for you roto folks) to worry about right now. The September roster expansion deepens the pool of potential Value Picks, but pitchers running up against inning limits, wearing down, or outright being shutdown cuts into that depth a bit.

Weekly Planner: Week 18

0

Paul Sporer

This week finds tons of two-start pitchers worth using, so have at it.

Despite actually posting better peripherals than last year, Ian Kennedy’s ERA and WHIP have lagged this year, but he appears to be getting back on track with back-to-back gems and a chance for a third straight and second in a week when he faces the Mets on Saturday. He is still toting a 4.20 ERA, though, so there may still be time to buy at a discount. Anyone paying attention isn’t just going to give him away, but it’s worth a shot. Frankly, I’d buy at market value, so any discount would be icing.

It was supposed to be a star-studded week in the NL with six auto-starters going, but Clayton Kershaw, R.A. Dickey, and Roy Halladay have all been smacked around in their initial start of the week. At least Zack Greinke, Gio Gonzalez, and Josh Johnson have held up their end. Of the three duds, I’m not at all worried about Kershaw, am slightly concerned about Dickey’s horrid July, and am legitimately worried that Halladay simply isn’t 100 percent yet.
