Which teams' glass slippers best fit the six still-unsigned top-50 free agents?

It was new and exciting in November, mundane in December, and comforting and familiar in January. But by mid-February, speculating about likely landing spots for attractive free agents is as tired as publicly celebrating the Beatles.*

Granted, the alternative would be talking about the sort of stuff that otherwise occupies us early in spring training: what players look like; what players look like from afar; what players might look like from afar, if we could see them; what players look like upside-down; meaningless quotes about team chemistry. There’s only so much we can do to combat the boring until real baseball begins.

Rumor Roundup: Failures to Communicate

3

Daniel Rathman

The teams and remaining free agents that still seem not to be talking.

No recent contact between Indians, Ubaldo Jimenez
The Indians tendered Ubaldo Jimenez a qualifying offer. The right-hander turned it down. Since then, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the sides have barely spoken.

Rumor Roundup: Plenty of Arms Available

1

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles keep searching for a starter, A.J. Burnett and Ryan Madson remain available, and the Pirates look for first-base help.

Pirates dissatisfied with current first-base situation
If the season started today, the Pirates would have Gaby Sanchez splitting time with a left-handed first baseman, most likely either Andrew Lambo or Chris McGuiness. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, in the eyes of general manager Neal Huntington, that won’t do.

Cafardo wrote on Sunday that there is “mutual interest” between the Pirates and Kendrys Morales, who declined a qualifying offer from the Mariners and hasn’t found many (any?) suitors on the open market. Morales’ agent, Scott Boras, isn’t afraid to drag free agents into March—as he showed last offseason with Kyle Lohse—but the pressure could turn up as Opening Day nears, because the first baseman turned down $14.1 million on his agent’s advice.

Rumor Roundup: Orioles Adding Arms?

1

Daniel Rathman

The Orioles hope to sign two pitchers, and the Diamondbacks might be about to get richer.

The Orioles’ plan: two arms in two weeks
Orioles pitchers and catchers are required to report to the team’s spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida, by February 13. According to Andrew Rickli of SportsReel Boston, if Dan Duquette has his way, that group will include two newcomers by the time everyone heads south.

Playoff Prospectus: NLDS Game One Preview: Pirates vs. Cardinals

2

Ben Carsley

The Cardinals went 9-10 versus the Pirates in the regular season, but that slate is wiped clean as the Central rivals tangle for the first time in October.

PECOTA Odds of Winning: Cardinals 62.1%. Pittsburgh 37.9%

Fantasy Starting Pitcher Planner: Week 21

9

Paul Sporer

Paul helps you set your fantasy rotation for the coming week with a look at the two-start pitchers.

Welcome to the Weekly Pitching Planner. Each week I will cover the pitchers are who slated to make two starts and help you decide who you should start and who you should sit. Sometimes guys will be in the “consider” where they might have one good start, but a second tough one and then your league settings might determine whether or not you should go forward with him. The pitchers will be split by league then by categories:

Auto-Starts – These are your surefire fantasy aces. You paid a handsome sum for them either with an early draft pick or high dollar auction bid so you’re starting them anywhere, anytime. Guys can emerge onto or fall off of this list as the season evolves. There won’t be many – if any – notes associated with these groupings each week. We are starting them automatically so why do I need to expound on how awesome they are and will be in the coming week?

David Price turned in his third complete game in four starts to lead the Rays past the Red Sox. Tonight, Zack Greinke will try to sustain his success against Brandon Phillips.

The Wednesday Takeaway
Before the Rays' series against the Red Sox, David Price said, “I want to go nine every fifth day.” Taking the ball in the third game, he did exactly that, disposing of baseball’s best offense with just 97 pitches.

Price completed the first four innings with 35 pitches and needed only 10 to close out the game’s final frame, throwing strikes from the beginning of the contest through the end. All four of his pitches proved effective, with his sinker averaging nearly 95 mph, a mark he’s been hitting consistently since returning from a six-week stint on the disabled list to nurse a triceps injury. Boston’s only run came on a Mike Napoli homer in the seventh.
