KG, if Puig was able to get $42M, what do you think Appel would get on the open market? If the Pirates final offer is $4M, would an extra $40M be enough to risk playing pro ball in Japan or Mexico on a 1 or 2 year deal for a chance of skirting the draft and becoming a free agent?
What are your thoughts on high school pitchers (Mitch Sewald a LSU signee and Emerson Gibbs a Tulane Signee) throwing 154 and 193 pitches in an extra inning game? Are they viewed as draft propsects? Dylan Bundy racked up a high pitch counts, but was also the top HS pitcher. Do teams avoid fringe prospects that have been abused by amateur coaches or at least take note of it?
KG, could you discuss the large discrepancy in Mike Montgomery's ranking across different publications this year. I usually put the most weight into your opinions and was wondering how one well respected publication can have him as the Royals top prospect and for you #6 and outside the top 101. Is this a case of scouts outside the Royals org being unimpressed or more of personal opinion, and if you were to poll ten scouts how many do you think would take Matt Purke over Mike Montgomery?
I read a small report in BA's draft database about Deandre Toney that said he was athletic and produced at juco but he didn't have a carrying tool to merit a selection in the first 20 rounds. Was the comment on him not having a carrying tool (from what you have seen/heard) based on his current tool set or his projection?
What are your thoughts on Brett Eibner? Does he stay in center or moves to rf? Is his low average due more to the early season hand injury or poor hit tool? The power tool is good enough to try ________ more years in the OF before going back to pitching?
Thanks for another solid read JP, Did you get a chance to watch Humberto Arteaga? The scouting reports from last year never seemed to support his 7-figure bonus, is his ceiling a slick fielding ss that can't run and hits for an empty average?
Do sabermetric savy scouts use stats from incomplete games that end up being suspended and otherwise forgotten? For instance Wil Myers hit a homerun last night, if a scout is at the game he is going to make note of it, but do SABR people use it too?
As a prospect and Royals fan, the fact that Dayton Moore seems committed to putting the best team on the field and not saving money years down the road is a huge incentive to get season tickets now or next year instead of waiting until 2013 or later.
I understand that third is a more difficult position. Myers was mostly an infielder in highschool that was moved behind the plate full time after signing to increase his postional value. My point was instead of downgrading his positional value from catcher to corner outfielder, move to third if the glove is adequate enough to advance with the bat reguardless of what prospects/players are ahead of the player. I don't know if that is possible with Myers, but didn't Sandoval convert to third at the major league level? If your going to move Myers from behind the plate to start the year why not start him at third in the spring and if it doesn't work then the outfield?
This idea was shot down on another baseball site but, wouldn't it give a team more value to move an athletic catching prospect to third base before the outfield? There are cases every year of players moving from third to outfield at the major league level but none the other way around. Myers and Harper played some shortstop in highschool if the tools are there to defensively keep up with their bats why not start at third and have the flexibilty to move Zimmerman in a couple years or Moustakas in Justin Upton trade if you wanted. If you don't you can then move them to the outfield or if Myers is better defensively at third move Moustakas.
Time Melville was a 4-star prospect last year and didn't make the top 20 this year. Is that a result of KC's system taking a huge step forward and him not progressing as fast or did his stuff take a step back?
How do latin american shortstops Humberto Arteaga and baseball prospect formerly known as Paulo Carlixte project at the major league level, and where will they start next year?
Was surprised to see Allie get a 5-star grade, how does he compare to Jeffress at the same age? Is he one of the top 5 prospects to come out of this draft or should we expect a fair amount of 5-star grades for first round picks/big bonuses?
Making the trip to see Springfield-NW Ark game, Montgomery and Broderick are starting, how would you rank the top prospects on the field tonight? Hosmer, Montgomery, Carpenter, Kozma, D. Robinson?
Have you recieved any positive reports from Idaho Falls on Lane Adams? For someone signed to play basketball coming out of high school does his line over the last 10 games (.385/.457/.615, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, and 2 SB) mean his athleticism is starting to become playable tools?
What's the difference in Montgomery being a 4-star prospect and Casey Crosby being a 5-star? They had similar numbers while Montgomery was in the MWL and Crosby is older and has had TJ surgery already.
Did the Royals sign Cheslor Cuthbert for the rumored 1.2M?
Their career lines can't be compared directly because Vitters has only put up impressive lines when he was in inferior leagues than Moustakas and Dominguez. Moustakas and Dominguez spent their first full season in Low A, Vitters was sent down after 12 at bats, and then dominated rookie ball. This year he dominated MWL then struggled when moved to the same level as the other two. I'm not only basing my opinion on his 200 at bats at an appropriate level, but that he has only earned that many at bats while in the same time the other two have over 800.
He demolished the same league that Moustakas did in the second half last year, Moustakas has a better chance to stay at third can handle a move to the outfield and has shown more consistent power. Dominguez is going to play third and struggled at AA not through two seasons of A ball.
Vitters is the best prospect at third? I though it wasn't a question of if, but when he'll have to move to first, and an OPS barely over .600 for an age apropriate level (for his draft position) doesn't sound promising especially for the prospects listed below him.
My favorite article of the year, thanks Mr. Goldstein. I have lots of question but I\'ll try to use some restraint.
What is Jose Bonilla\'s Perfect World Projection? Is Kyle Wright considered a two star prospect after a strong fall? Were there any lesser known prospects that impressed at instructs? Any news on Hayenga\'s shoulder?
I know you already work a lot of this information in but a whole section on how several scouts view a player would be clutch. If you could include the varrying opinions and different player comparables to give a range of how scouts see the player developing and then conclude with any consensus they have.
