So is this the year that there will FINALLY be a uniform player ID that matches everyone between PECOTA, the PFM downloads, and the customizable in-season stat reports? IT would be awfully handy :)
If I'm the O's I get in on the bidding for Adam Dunn at 1st. His glove isn't going to help them but his bat sure will ... and it would stick a nice thorn in the side of the interloping franchise to the South.
How about a 1:1 correlation between players as listed in PECOTA, and as listed in the various sortable reports? Guys are named differently (e.g. Manuel Corpas v. Manny Corpas) and sometimes even teams are (LAA v. ANA). Some of us use BP data to come up with our own in-season predictors, and since the sortable reports do not include HoweID or BPID there is no way to reconcile them without a manual translation. Big PITA...
Have Verizon FIOS, and channel 86 MLBNet is right smack in the middle of the sports tier, channels 70-100, above ESPNs (70-74) but right before NHL 87, NFL 88, and NBA 89. Seems pretty prime placement to me ...
Non-closer relievers. Anyone can count saves or holds, but I'd love some analysis on who's doing the best job in innings 7 and 8, even for teams where the closer isn't going anywhere barring injury. I consider BP to be a specialty site, one that can and should delve into a level of detail that others don't usually bother with.
It would be extra awesome if this could show up in some of the real statistical reports as well. It's a PITA to compare a players projection with his actual performance when he's named, for example, "Manual Corpas" in one data set but "Manny Corpas" in another and there's no unifying ID link.
If I could second this ... It would REALLY be great if there was a single key ID attached to each player in both the preseason projections and mid-season down-loadable statistics reports.
Not that I'm down on Ryan Church, but when a team is evidently trying to put together an all former Nats outfield, I'm not sure how we can call that an improvement.
There's also the notion of making the Orioles a more attractive destination for prospective future Free Agents. We know that money rules all, but when the money is at least close players will (in theory) go to teams that have a chance of contending. Each piece begets the next piece, in a sense.
Also, Livan helps to assure a second straight #1 draft pick. Something of somewhat more value than one or two meaningless wins another competent pitcher might get them
I actually like PW% and PWO%. They lend themselves rather naturally to the term "Pwned", which is an admirable and apt bit of cross pollination geekery.
So who plays CF for the NL if Beltran doesn't make the trip? Everyone else is a corner outfielder, and it's no sure think that either Kemp or Victorino makes it through the final ballot nonsense.
The Mariners (granted, prior management) don't have a great track record of handling it well when they are almost-but-not-quite-actually-good. Failure to properly judge the true talent level of their team is what got them in this mess in the first place.
It's true that adding a bat could get them in to the postseason. It's also true that Washburn and Branyan could turn back into pumpkins, and Bedard's arm could fall off again.
A fine piece, but one is left wondering where exactly Emilio Bonifacio fits. Is he aptly named? If so, is he going to one day hulk out and become Albert Pujols?
Dude, this is a MLB club. They get to hire ivy league grads for peanuts because EVERYONE wants to work for a pro sports franchise. They will not be hurting for qualified applicants :)
He is implicated, in that the ChiSox scout who was skimming and got canned was once upon a time a Reds scout working for Bowden. That\'s the extent of the information that is public.
This is hardly an \"only in New York\" thing. Similar shenanigans occur with pretty much every major sports franchise when they get a new stadium. Count the number of empty club level seats next time you see a Washington Redskins game ... and that one was built during the height of the boom market!
Clay I know you said that you\'ll be updating these as the season progresses. When you publish an update are you going to be telling us which teams you\'ve updated? Or just that something somewhere is new? For now, of course, there is wholesale cleanup, but once things stabilize I\'d expect the changes to be more piecemeal. Thanks!
I don\'t understand why teams don\'t more often bring a starter on in relief on his \"throw day\". Seems to me you\'re going to have one guy available for this role in every game, and it would allow you to use the roster spot in some other way. If a team were to commit to this right out of spring training, the starters could just make it part of their 5-day routine.
