Wholeheartedly agree with the above comments. The PG content is definitely value-add and increases the likelihood that I will renew my subscription.
What sort of draft/college coverage can we expect to get in-season?
Not sure that the dig at Betemit is entirely warranted. The last three years (including 2012) of somewhat regular duty, he has posted OPS against RHP of 873, 865 and 865. He just can't hit from the right side. Looking at his bat only, he deserves to be the long side of a platoon, not on the bench.
Oops. I mean, Wei-Yin Chen. And thanks for the Darivsh article, Derek. Well-written and well-researched. It's also very helpful to include the links to related works in the piece. Great job.
Any word to pass along on the Taiwanese pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons, Chei-Yin Chen? He is a free agent (i.e., no posting fee), young, and supposedly has great stuff from the left side, though I think 2011 was an off-year.
Now that Casey McGehee has kicked off the glass slipper - how remote is the possibility that the Brewers either re-sign Fielder or acquire a FA to man first, and swallow Gamel's bad D at third? Is he really that bad there?
Where's Jonah Keri to write up Pascual Perez, Ellis Valentine and Andy McGaffigan? Sigh.
And hey, what ever happened to the '80s baseball project? If it's no longer going to be published, how about releasing some of the content on the website?
When I clicked through I expected a discussion of how Baker should choose among the rotation candidates, or at least what would happen with Aroldis Chapman. Still a good blurb, and this omission may in part be why it's found in Unfiltered instead of being a comprehensive article.
Good read Christina. I was surprised you didn't try to deal from the surplus of MIF. How do you see Bartlett, Brignac, Rodriguez and Zobrist splitting time this year?
Kevin, how much slack should we be cutting Alonso for the lack of power due to his hamate bone injury? Besides, he has a .258 ISO in July with 5 HR in 98 PA, so maybe he's rounding into form.
KG, what are your thoughts on Stephen Fife? He seems to both get a lot of groundballs and a decent number of K's (generally with low walks). Future starter on a contender at least?
Per the Davenport translations, Beckham had a .272 EQA this year, which, as you point out, as a 19 year-old playing SS is pretty good. Perhaps not as impressive a year as was enjoyed by Alvarez or G. Beckham, but a pretty good statistical start for a guy with his tools.
Isn't this experiment somewhat tautological -- i.e., these particular pitchers were included in the data set in part because of their success against elite hitters? Is there some sort of cause-and-effect circularity that is happening here? I don't know, just asking.
