Question on the mechanics. Which of these guys do you think are most at risk for injury based on how they throw? I've liked what I've read about Wisler in the past, but phrases like "herky-jerky" and "noisy delivery" give me some pause.
Good stuff overall!
I'm in agreement with most. The formulaic new team essay format was generic and pretty awful. It used to be you didn't know what to expect when you turned to a team essay, but it was almost always informative and interesting in its own way. Following the generic "2012 review" "2013 preview" and "State of the organization" format really stifles the creativity. "Bigger" doesn't always mean "Better" and I believe this was the worst effort yet.
And so many inconsistencies. For example, in the team "report" (I refuse to call it an essay) for the Cincinnati Reds, its says "Todd Frazier...will man third base." But in Frazier's player comment it says "he doesn't have a position." Oh and it says Frazier can "play all 4 corners". Hmm...don' think he's ever played RF...3 corners, yes. And in Billy Hamilton's comment, he said he moves from SS to centerfield "last season." Should say "in the Arizona Fall League." He played SS in the minors all season. Just shoddy editing.
Oh and the Pecota system needs some refinement. Whatever changes were made makes the projections skew way too heavily to past performance. It also needs to take into account likely playing time. Or I guess a ton of players will have exactly 250 plate appearances this season.
As a long-time subscriber to this website and buyer of the BP annual and the other books produced by the BP team, I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated with the overall nosedive of the content in the BP annual the last few years. It's taken more and more thought each year before I renew my subscription, and now I'm going to pause before I buy the Prospectus in 2014.
So my advice is...
"This ain't Bleacher Report, step up your game!"
Unfortunately it won't happen, but the Cincinnati Reds need to trade for Joel Hanrahan. Then they could have the announcers' nightmare of the following:
"Hanigan sets the sign....here's the pitch from Hanrahan....and a sharp ground ball to third fielded by Hannahan!"
Not when there is nobody out....just foolish
Agreed. I'm not doing e-book or kindle nonsense. Also, I'd like to be able to order it through THIS website, not amazon.com.
Yeah I should probably hold my nose and keep Helton, just not liking it. Also consider that none of the young guys with upside will be available.
But with those other 1B out there, you don't think I could get Helton back for the same price, or maybe a buck or two more? Maybe most guys will have the Why Overpay? mindset when it comes to that position.
I have Votto in a keeper league (10-team NL only 5x5) in the last year of his long-term contract at $20, so I'm loving that. My problem is what to do with Todd Helton.
For my last keeper I can have Helton at $6 or Ted Lilly at $8. It's 13 keepers total, and I already have 6 other pitchers I'm keeping.
A lot of other guys already have first basemen they are keeping so Helton isn't drawing much trade interest. But if I throw him back, I don't want to have to spend a lot on that position.
Oh and the best 1B likely available will be Howard, Loney, C. Lee, Cuddyer and LaRoche.
Will they attempt to convert Aroldis Chapman into a starter?
Yes, the Reds had already announced this a while ago.
"I would definitely remove the fielder’s right to the baseline while fielding a thrown ball."
How can you enforce that? How do you define "fielding?" Fielding is not just the actual act of catching the ball. Part of catching the ball is getting into position to catch it.
The fielder can't control if that throw is coming in on target. The fielder has just as much right to the ball as the runner has to the base.
And Posey was on one knee, not both knees, and that's why he got hurt. His right foot was planted, and that created the resistance that caused the injury. Had he been on both knees, Posey would have tumbled backward. Poor fundamentals.
Hmm....all the 'taken players' stuff is working now (it definitely was NOT updating before).
The latest fun glitch is that in the section that shows my players, after hitting update once or twice, it changes all my players salaries to $1. Nice.
Giving up on this for today.
Was just in PFM and it's not working. I click off the first 5 or 6 players with salaries, then hit update. It takes the guys off, but nothing shows in the "taken" field.
Then I try again, click off 5-10 more guys, then hit update. This time, it just goes back to the beginning with no players removed and they're all on the list.
You guys have major bugs EVERY year when you launch it. It's getting pretty frustrating. I guess I'll come back in a couple weeks and maybe it will work then,
"The hitting was reminiscent of the Big Red Machine."
I don't where this team ranked in the NL in hitting, please please please DON'T insult the BRM by comparing that offense to this group.
Love your stuff as always, Kevin. Do you have any insight into Brett Jackson's timetable? Could he end up in Triple-A by the end of the season?
Oh and hate to nitpick (wait I'm a copy editor, so I love to nitpick) but one of my pet peeves can be found in the Cashner item...."the reigns are off, and the results are stunning." That should be "reins" in this case.
I see reign/rein misusage everywhere.
There is absolutely ZERO chance that Aroldis Chapman makes the Reds Opening Day roster. Zero. His contract right now is a 6-year deal for $30 million (with money deferred so it will be paid out over 10 years. There is a clause, however, that says if Chapman makes the majors before May 15, then his 6-year contract becomes a 3-year contract, for the same money. Sacrifice 3 years of team control for a month and half of the season? Not happening...
Most likely, Chapman might come up in August or Sept. He is far from polished and faces a big cultural adjustment to the United States. He may start in High A or Double A.
I ordered mine from Borders.com on Feb. 5 (had a gift card). Still shows up as pre-ordered, and no update to the release date of Feb. 22.
I hate waiting....If I see one in a store over the weekend, I'm going to buy it, then sell the one from Borders to a friend of mine. Yes, I'm insane.
Reds aren't looking to trade for a center fielder. They were quite happy with how Stubbs played. Bigger concerns are shortstop and LF....also maybe a lefty starting pitcher. Any cost-effective pitching, really.
No love for Ohio. How about somewhere in Cincy, Dayton or Columbus?
The biggest problem with the Buffalo Bisons name is that it\'s bad grammar. The plural of Bison is...Bison.
