Alex Balog

Born: 07/16/1992 (Age: 21)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 5" Weight: 210
Mechanics
Tall, filled frame that is showing some physical development; high three-quarters arm slot; short arm action and slight hip turn at balance point help to hide the ball/create deception; drop-and-drive delivery, maintains center of balance well; firms up glove arm just below the letters; pitches well over a flexible front leg; displays a little bit of stiffness/rigidity, but motion is generally easy considering his height.

Fastball 40 50 89-93 94 Generates decent plane on his fastball via a high three-quarters arm slot; fringe-average arm-side movement; fairly straight; worked down at the beginning of the game but began elevating/losing his release point as the start progressed; command/control wavered throughout.
Curveball 45 50 73-80 81 Curveball varied between 11-5 and 10-4 break; good command; loopy in the lower registers and used as a get-me-over, change-of-pace offering early in counts; flashed average at 80-81 mph with sharp vertical break; showed ability to get swings-and-misses off the plate but could be squared up in the zone; went to curveball when he couldn't throw fastball for strikes.
Changeup 45 55 78-81 83 Good arm speed on the offering; some arm-side sink and run; used against both righties and lefties; showed decent command, particularly to his arm-side; showed more comfort in the curveball, but the changeup is the better pitch long-term; above-average future pitch.
Overall

Balog projects to have three average to slightly above-average offerings, suggesting that he could potentially become a back-end, no. 5 starter that chews innings. The ceiling isn't huge, and he's likely to become more of a swingman/middle reliever than a starter due to the noted command issues as he works later into games.
