2008 Paul Phillips has appeared in just 58 major league games over the last four years, is now 31, and stopped hitting even Triple-A pitching two years ago. He was designated for assignment in December. 2007 Paul Phillips has stayed healthy the last three years, but his performance has declined in each of the last two. Taken off the 40-man after the season, his defense could make him a marginal backup somewhere. 2005 Phillips was the Royals' best catching prospect in 2000, but he injured his elbow so badly that he was able to play in a grand total of 13 games over the next three years. Finally coming back, he was not only able to stay healthy for most of 2004, he put up the best offensive numbers of his career in his first crack at Triple-A. The Royals like him a lot, having kept him on the 40-man roster throughout his ordeal, and Phillips has only NRI Alberto Castillo to beat out for the role of backup catcher.
