YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Young's bat caught fire for the first two weeks of the season, but a separated right shoulder knocked him out of the lineup for a month, and he was a shell of his pre-injury self upon his return. He hit just .206 from May through the end of the season, and also battled a right thigh strain that kept him out of the starting lineup for the final month. Traded to Oakland in the offseason, Young now finds himself as a small fish in a crowded outfield, but he could thrive in a new environment with the alleviated pressure of lowered expectations, though he will have to overcome the difficult transition from the fly-ball haven of Chase Field to the pop-up hell that is the Coliseum.
2012 Is Young a good center fielder, a poor one, or one who fluctuates from year to year? His FRAA has alternated between positive and negative numbers in each of his six major-league seasons, but he was a Gold Glove finalist last season and routinely makes spectacular plays in center. Heís also settled in as a comfortably above-average hitter, cutting down on his strikeouts in three straight seasons. Young hits for low averages, but itís not because of his Ks: Despite his speed, heís a low-BABIP hitter because of his tendency to get under the ball. The right-handed hitter has popped up 16.9 percent of his batted balls since 2009, by far the highest rate among players with at least 1500 plate appearances over that span. Youngís speed makes him good at many things, but beating out infield flies isnít one of them.
2011 From 2006-09, PECOTA projected All-Star caliber production from Young, only to be terribly disappointed by the time September rolled around. Last year, the projection system effectively gave up on its problem child, forecasting a .252 TAv and one win above replacement. Naturally, Young responded with his best season, an All-Star appearance, and career highs in stolen bases and on-base percentage. Power and speed have long been his calling cards, but the majority of his improvement last season can be traced to his newly-acquired patience. If Young can find a way to build on this attribute, or even sustain it, the Diamondbacks will have two of the best young players in the game in the same outfield (assuming that Upton is not wearing a different uniform by the time you read this).
2010 Chris Young is to PECOTA what Daniel Cabrera is to pitching coaches. No matter how little he produces, the system keeps expecting that Young will figure things out and live up to the performance his attributes and comparables portend. At this point, the Diamondbacks might settle for a comparable of Augie Ojeda. Some will point to Young's strong .263/.351/.508 showing after a recall on August 29 as a sign of things to come, but he hit .278/.343/.508 in the second half of the 2008 season as well. He lacks the center-field defense required to make a .320 on-base percentage playable. Nor does he display the consistent power that would carry one of the corner outfield spots. This will be a make-or-break season for Young, who is increasingly young in name only.
2009 Sophomore slump, or cause for concern? There are still more questions than answers here. The power drop can be attributed to a nagging wrist injury, and the decline in steals might be explained by his losing the leadoff job, but to fully write off the season requires those excuses and more. Young still strikes out a ton, so he needs to keep improving his plate discipline and turn more of 2008's doubles back into balls that go over the fence in order to become the star people thought he would be. A very good second half last year (.278/.343/.508) gives cause for optimism.
2008 How many guys get touted for the Rookie of the Year award before the season, hit 32 homers during the season, and are seen as disappointments after? Like Byrnes and Hudson, there's more here than meets the eye-Young's a very effective baserunner, a good center fielder with the tools to be a very good one, and his power isn't merely park-generated. The problem is that he squandered too many at-bats by popping up instead of making solid contact, proving half again as likely to pop up on contact as your average right-handed hitter (doing so 12.5 percent of the time against an average mark of 8.6 percent for all right-handed batters from 2003-2007). He can do much better, and he's gotten good marks for his coachability in the past.
2007 Young`s season began when he fell during spring workouts and broke his hand, and ended when he slipped while avoiding a ground ball and was ruled out at second on a reversed call that ended the Diamondbacks` season. Young managed to stand firm in between those spills, however, as his place on most prospect lists (whether scout-based or stat-based) will attest. He does a convincing Mike Cameron impression in just about every phase of the game, and approximated PECOTA`s enthusiastic projection. Among a talented group of prospects, Young is the one with the most potential to bust out and have a truly outstanding career.
2005 In an organization with more gratuitous muscularity than a South Beach gym, Young looked like the runt of the bunch, but both his body and his ballgame are filling out. His power and his speed project to be plus skills, and while his strikeout rate is high, it's coming from working late into the count rather than an abundance of swings-and-misses. The White Sox are said to be pleased with his defense in center field, but that might decline as he adds muscle to his frame.
