2010 Moore hasn't taken heat for dishing out a two-year, $6 million contract for Yasuhiko Yabuta, perhaps because the Farnsworth signing gives critics more than enough ammunition.
2009 The AL Central imported two-thirds of "YFK," the vaunted veteran relief trio from Bobby Valentine's Chiba Lotte Marines, but goods crossed the fine line from "well-aged" to "spoiled" somewhere over the Pacific. Yabuta signed essentially the same two-year, $6 million contract as his Japanese teammate Masahide Kobayashi did with Cleveland, but had an even more forgettable American introduction, giving up 12 runs in 13 innings during April. Designated for assignment in June, no one dared touch his contract, so Yabuta continued his tour of the Midwest in Omaha, where he did even worse. Yabuta's track record in Japan didn't portend much better—his 50th-percentile PECOTA projection was very nearly a dead wringer for his actual line. The odds of him rebounding this year are poor.
2008 The principle that mediocre starters sometimes become excellent relievers applies in Japan, too. Yabuta's career blossomed in 2004 after a move to the pen, where he relies on a good fastball-forkball mix. As a group, Japanese relievers have been much more successful stateside than their compatriot hitters and starting pitchers. Just since 2004, Akinori Otsuka, Hideki Okajima, and Takashi Saito have all been tremendous pickups. Yabuta should replace David Riske in the setup role with similar results, which would make signing Yabuta for a less than a third of the guaranteed money the White Sox gave Scott Linebrink a steal.
