2011-04-05 13:00:00	Wanna talk about the Angels . . . due for a continued collapse . . . still starting Jeff Mathis, still employing Brandon Wood and Reggie Willits, hiring Fernando Rodney to close, and still riding Scott Kazmir - now the worse starting pitcher in the league? (Scoresheetwiz from Great Lakes Region)	Writers like to pick the Twins every year just because the Twins seem to overcome expectations, and they like to pick the Angels because they have a long track-record of excellence, but I think in both cases they've missed the boat this year. These teams had maybe the worst offseasons in baseball. In the case of the Angels, I still have some belief in Willits as a fourth/fifth outfielder, but as I discussed in today's Broadside (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=13452) the Mathis thing is terrible and retaining Brandon Wood simply cruel. I used to have great admiration for Mike Scioscia's talents, but it seems like he's ossified and his worst instincts now control him. (Steven Goldman)
2008-11-03 13:30:00	Thanks for the great, and depressing, deconstruction of the Jacobs deal for KC and its ramifications. Given this blind spot for raw power and ignoring the subtleties, how do you see Dayton Moore moving forward this winter? Do you see any off-the-radar corner outfield notions that make any sense (Juan Rivera)? (BL from Bozeman, MT)	Sorry to call it as I saw and generate some joylessness on the Great Plains, BL. There are veteran outfielders who can be had cheaply, certainly, but like you, I'd like to see if getting a guy like Rivera on the cheap was possible. However, unless they make DeJesus their CF, you might be targeting the wrong Angel outfielder--Reggie Willits would be sort of nice to have, I'd think. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-14 13:00:00	Brett Gardner has two more stolen bases today against the Reds -- any room for him on the roster? Sure seems like he'd be useful, and it isn't like he's a zero at the plate. (g-mo from noch)	I'm a Gardner fan, but we have to recognize that he's a little feller with no power to speak of. That said, they could really use his skill set in the fifth outfielder line, because they currently have a deficit in the pinch-runner/defensive replacement department. As I've written elsewhere, the only reason not to select Gardner for that job, if they can find room with all of the corner types they're going to carry, is that he's a lefty, and it would be nice if the reserve OF could spell Bobby Abreu against the tougher southpaws. I'm rooting for a Reggie Willits acquisition, but know it won't happen. (Steven Goldman)
