2013 Claimed off waivers from the Yankees, Eli Whiteside is a career backup catcher who will provide added depth behind the plate.
2012 Sixty-four starts from Whiteside is just too many starts, for a team and for a Whiteside. After Buster Posey's injury, the gray-haired backup stepped in for his first full-time job; it took two months before he was gassed, and in the final two months he hit .150/.179/.213. The Giants don't want to overtax Posey as he returns in 2012, so they'll aim to enter the season with a better-than-average backup.
2011 Veteran backstop Eli Whiteside didn’t get into a single post-season game and will have plenty of time to catch up on his reading as Buster Posey’s backup.
2010 Journeyman Eli Whiteside arrived in the general vicinity of the right place and right time to become the notional veteran caddy for Buster Posey; somebody's got to do it.
2007 Eli Whiteside is probably wondering if he accidentally ran over the Angelos family cat or something; he didn`t pan out as a prospect, but c`mon, Chris Widger?
2005 The only thing Geronimo Gil has on Eli Whiteside is that Gil has a couple of hundred major league at-bats, while Whiteside has yet to play above Double-A. He's got the defensive chops for the job, which is usually the first hurdle towards getting a shot in the majors, and he is a much better power hitter than Gil, but he's going to struggle to post even a .300 OBP. As a starter that kills a team, but you might be able to live with it in your backup, if the pop and defense are there.

(jlarsen from chicago)
Best question yet. Springfield Isotopes, Shelbyville Nuclear Power Plant team. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-11-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Yankees acquired Eli Whiteside, then sign him to a deal within last week or so to avoid arbitration. However, they end up just DFA'ing him yesterday to make room for Pettitte. Why all the trouble in acquiring & signing him to a deal, when you were just going to attempt to put him through waivers in long-run in hopes to have him ready in SWB "in case of emergency"?
(jlarsen from Highland Park, IL)
Love Highland Park, jlarsen. Great place to live. You don't win with 25 guys, and an older club needs even more depth. Brian Cashman is absolutely brilliant, constantly finds options, so I like that deal. If you're rigid in your thinking this time of the year, you will regret it next season when you don't have options. (Dan Evans)
