2012 The last survivor of the 2006 Gary Sheffield trade, Kevin Whelan has always struck out more than his share of batters but had zero command. He got the walks under control last year, but when his chance came to impress the Yankees—whoops!—he walked five in two appearances and that was that, probably for good.
2010 Kevin Whelan's profile is as fixed as the Rock of Gibraltar: he throws hard but has no idea where the ball's going. Effectiveness in spite of that should earn him a shot, though probably not with this organization.
2008 Picked up in the Gary Sheffield trade, Kevin Whelan throws very hard and very wild. The Yankees need all the bullpen help they can get, but Whelan walked nearly seven men per nine innings at Trenton.
2007 One of the three pitching prospects dealt to the Yankees in the Gary Sheffield trade, Whelan began his career at Texas A&M as a catcher before showing off his 96-MPH heat in summer league competition and eventually becoming the team`s closer. His strikeout rates have been tremendous, and he`s allowed just two homers in his minor league career on the strength of his tough splitter, though he leaves his fastball up in the zone enough that he grades out as a fly ball pitcher. His command needs work and his stocky body is a bit nontraditional, but he projects as a good setup man along the lines of Scott Williamson.
2006 Whelan started his college career as a catcher. As a sophomore at Texas A&M, he pitched a few games, but was still mostly a catcher. The next summer he somehow wound up as a reliever in the Cape Cod League, was sensational, and suddenly he`s a prospect. Whelan had as near perfect a pro debut as you could ask for. He`s likely to move up quickly, thanks to a 95-96 mph fastball and a good splitter.

2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)do you see any role in the Yankees' pen this year for any of: Jeff Marquez, Mark Melancon, J.B. Cox, Kevin Whelan or Humberto Sanchez? Any plans to use Horne in a Joba 2007 role? Thanks for your great work!
(Eli from Brooklyn)
I think just because of the numbers game that Horne's big league career will probably begin in the bullpen, but it would be silly to expect a Joba like performance from him (or frankly, anyone). I was never a big Cox fan, but Whelan and Sanchez are both guys who could get later looks if they can throw more strikes (Whelan) or look good after elbow surgery (Sanchez). (Kevin Goldstein)
