2016-09-08 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any of the following playing meaningful roles in the mlb in 2017: Rio Ruiz, A Knapp, Micah Johnson, A Toles?
(DB from Pgh)
I'm going to say no on Ruiz, Knapp and Johnson, but I firmly believe that Andrew Toles, who has already shown his value as a righty-masher for the Dodgers, becomes a quality platoon outfield for Los Angeles moving forward. If you're looking for the next platoon specialist like Matt Joyce or Danny Valencia, this is your guy. (George Bissell)
2016-08-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)After their altercation, do you see Danny Valencia and/or Billy Butler being sent packing in the offseason?
(John from San Francisco)
John, thank you for asking a question about the Oakland A's. I've actually quite enjoyed watching their underwhelming season this year.

Anyways, I think Butler is on thin ice with this club. This scuffle aside, he's under-performed pretty heavily outside of a late-summer hot streak, and a DH-only kind of guy like Butler is a lot of dead weight and payroll to prop up if he's not producing. I think the A's are in a tough spot with him at the moment since they've invested so much into his ill-advised contract. I think we'll see him on the roster going into 2017, but if he starts slow, I think the A's will have to release him.

Valencia is a bit different. I was pretty surprised not to see him dealt at the deadline, and Oakland has been rolling him out pretty creatively since. He's been passable in RF, 1B, and perhaps a little below-average at third. He's an attractive piece for a lot of clubs, essentially a reliable bat you can stick in a few different places. I think he gets dealt in the offseason, more to maximize value than to litigate a clubhouse scuffle in a losing season. (Will Haines)
2016-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you explain what the A's are doing with Danny Valencia? He hits well from both sides of the plate. His bad defense can be mitigated. There are rumblings about being bad in the clubhouse, but he can't be as bad as some.
(John from San Francisco)
Well, I think that Valencia is going to be a free agent and not really part of the A's plans beyond this season ... but perhaps they didn't get the offer they wanted. I'm surprised he wasn't moved at the deadline, but since he's a solid contributor, maybe the A's just wanted to keep him around so they didn't look quite so bad in the last few games of the season. (Bryan Grosnick)
2016-07-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)How can there be so little trade interest in Danny Valencia? Even if his glove is terrible, he's still hitting .304/.354/.490!
(Jack from Sacramento)
I'm not sure that interest in him has suddenly evaporated, and we'll probably see him get moved before all is said and done. I was sure that the Mets would go for him before they brought back Reyes. He'll find a new home. (Nicolas Stellini)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)With David Wright out for the year, what kind of moves do you think the mets will make?
(Greg from NY)
I still think that a Danny Valencia trade makes a whole lot of sense for both the Mets and A's. (Bret Sayre)
2016-05-18 19:00:00 (link to chat)Pick 2 (ROS): Khris Davis, Brandon Drury, Danny Valencia, and Yasmany Tomas
(AJ from Boston)
Danny Valencia and Khris Davis. It's funny Davis is tied for the AL lead in home runs. I've been in on Valencia all offseason, assuming that the hamstring doesn't flare up again, he's going to hit for a ton of power. The progress he's made against right-handed pitching isn't a fluke. (George Bissell)
2015-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I need help understanding the Brett Lawrie trade. While he is no Josh Donadlson (cough), he is a 2-3 WAR 3B with some upside, and pretty cheap. Beane traded him off for 2 middling prospects, in order to clear space for.....Jed Lowrie and Danny Valencia?
(Q-Ball from Chicago)
I'm not sure I'm the one to help you, as I found that move puzzling to say the least as well. The team touched on it a little in the TA yesterday, but given the prospect return Oakland got it's tough to not see the Donaldson trade as anything but an unmitigated disaster at this point. Looooot of pressure on Franklin Barreto, who I like a good bit but...doesn't look like Josh Donaldson 2.0. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28038 (Wilson Karaman)
2015-08-13 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can you explain Billy Butler to me? Historically, he's hit better against left-handers than right-handers. This year, he's hitting .191/.327/.382 against lefties, but hitting .263/.302/.370 against righties. So, now he's hitting righties better, but only exhibits plate discipline against lefties. Why?
(Dave from Santa Monica)
Can I explain him? Sure. He's a big fella. So big they call him Country Breakfast. He was acquired in what has been a very poor year for Billy Beane and is losing at-bats to Danny Valencia.

(I have no idea what's going on with the splits.) (Greg Wellemeyer)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Christian Colon? He had a nice 2014 and seems like a solid 2b. What do you see his future as and will he get a chance to start for the Royals? Want to know more about him. Thx.
(Cristobal Colon from Pasadena, CA)
A certain segment of Royals fans will always link Colon with Chris Sale, which is a fair standard for the organization, but somewhat unfair for Colon. He impressed team officials by embracing his utility role this season. When the club traded Danny Valencia in July, they said the imperative was getting Colon to the majors. It would make some sense for Colon to get 250-300 at-bats next season as a backup for Omar Infante and a right-handed complement to Mike Moustakas at third base.

But, who knows. (Andy McCullough)
2013-08-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)There is speculation in the Detroit media that the Tigers won't take Peralta back, despite the obvious boost he gives them at shortstop, because of "image" concerns. I think that, if they don't play him and lose at any point, their image is tarnished forever. The Giants got to the WS because of a huge contribution from Melky. What do you think?
(Tigerdog from Orange county CA)
Well, they did trade for Iglalasis.

Tigerdog, hijacking your question to run this. It's official:

Major League Baseball issued the following discipline today for violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program in relation to the Biogenesis investigation. Players receiving 50-game suspensions without pay for their violations of the Program are:

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Antonio Bastardo;
San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera;
New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli;
Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz;
• Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League;
Houston Astros pitcher Sergio Escalona, who is currently of the roster of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League;
• Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League;
Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League;
• Free agent pitcher Jordan Norberto;
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta;
New York Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League; and
• Mets infielder/outfielder Jordany Valdespin, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League.

Norberto’s suspension will be effective immediately once he signs with another Major League organization. All other suspensions are effective immediately. None of the players will appeal their discipline.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, all of whom already have served 50-game suspensions as a result of their violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program stemming from their connections to Biogenesis, will not receive additional discipline.
Major League Baseball’s investigation found no violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez or Baltimore Orioles infielder Danny Valencia.

STATEMENT FROM THE TIGERS:
The Detroit Tigers today issued the following statement regarding the suspension of Jhonny Peralta:

"We recognize the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game. The Detroit Tigers continue to fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outline by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Tigers' organization will provide no further comment on Peralta’s suspension."

STATEMENT FROM PERALTA:
“In spring of 2012, I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I apologize to everyone that I have hurt as a result of my mistake, including my teammates, the Tigers’ organization, the great fans in Detroit, Major League Baseball, and my family. I take full responsibility for my actions, have no excuses for my lapse in judgment and I accept my suspension.
I love the fans, my teammates and this organization and my greatest punishment is knowing that I have let so many good people down. I promise to do everything possible to try and earn back the respect that I have lost.” (Maury Brown About Biogenesis and Business)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia legit or not? Don't recall hearing much about him before this season and he's 25. Seems like he had good numbers in the minors, but with not as much patience as he's had in the majors so far.
(Seth from Los Angeles)
He has a .371 BABIP so I'm going to go with no, but that doesn't mean he can't be any good. Cut 30-40 points off of each of his slash stats and he's still plenty useful for the position--he always had high BABIP in the minors, so if he posts .320 and .330 BABIP consistently I wouldn't be shocked. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia for real? Better keeper than Viciedo?
(kprince from Boston)
Valencia's BABIP is .377, which is driving his batting average up, but he's also been great in the minors (excepting this year). If he lost 30-40 points of batting average he wouldn't look anywhere near as impressive as he has in his first 202 plate appearances. I think he can be pretty good in the end, but this is a fluky hot streak to start his career. (Marc Normandin)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Danny Valencia the answer for the Twins at 3B in 2010?
(Travis from San Diego)
He'd certainly be my first choice. (Kevin Goldstein)
