2013 Thayer has a walrus-like mustache and a last name that rhymes with "slayer," making him an ideal choice to close games in Street's absence last May. The minor-league veteran features a mid-90s fastball, throws strikes, and isn't intimidated by situations. On June 20, his ERA was 6.27. Over his final 44 appearances it was 2.08, with opposing batters registering a 533 OPS against him. Thayer may or may not be a big-league closeróthe qualifications are nebulousóbut he did enough in his first extended stay to merit further looks in the late innings.
2012 Originally signed by the Padres in 2002, Dale Thayer has gotten brief cups of coffee in each of the past three seasons with the Rays and Mets. Back with his original organization, the strike-throwing right-hander resumes his quest for 200 minor-league saves.
2011 After becoming a mustachioed cult hero in 2009, Dale Thayer shaved his facial hair and didn't have as strong a season in 2010, either at Durham or in Tampa Bay, where he was clobbered in his lone appearance. Whether or not the minor-league free agent returns to the Rays, he needs to adorn his upper lip to have any chance at success.
2010 Mustachioed minor-league closer Dale Thayer became a cult figure thanks to his a memorable big-league debut, earning a three-inning save in a 15-2 win and taking his hacks against Ross Gload. He's had success at every stop en route to the majors, but scouts have never loved his stuff.
2009 With a pro-career ERA of 2.34, right-hander Dale Thayer and his slider are going to get a look at some point, but scouts think his lack of velocity in a set-up pitch will hold him back in the big leagues.
2005 Originally drafted by the Cubs in '99, Thayer went to Chico State instead, then hooked on with the Padres a few years later out of a SoCal tryout camp. He's overpowered hitters out of the pen thus far with a fastball/slider combo, but his violent delivery raises injury concerns. He's got the goods to make the show inside of two years, but he'll start this season in Mobile.

2012-07-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chaces that Dale Thayer becomes the Padres' closer this season? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
If Huston Street is traded at or before the deadline, as expected, Thayer probably returns to that role. Luke Gregerson is a better pitcher, but his platoon splits against left-handed hitters (.413 OBP against this year) are a concern when you can't play matchups. Assuming Bud Black doesn't go to a committee, Thayer has a strong chance of seeing more save chances down the road. (Daniel Rathman)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Howdy Jay ... thanks for chatting. Your choices for best mustaches currently in MLB are? More seriously ... at a certain point, prospects lose their optimal value if something isn't done with them. Is Montero's value "past prime"? Should Cashman have dealt any of his stable for "something", even if the (perceived) talent exchange was negative for the Yanks?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Hey Diana! John Axford has a pretty remarkable mustache. I haven't seen Dale Thayer lately and am not even sure he's on the Mets' 25-man roster, but he's got a fantastic mustache. I'm pretty sure Brendan Ryan's infield triple owes its entirety to the awesome power of the 'stache.

As for prospects, while I agree that they lose their optimal value at some point, I reject the notion that Montero's time has passed - he's 21 freakin' years old! I don't at all think there was any reason for Cashman to trade his blue chippers for "something" just to look busy. This isn't McDonalds, where if you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean.
