2009 Mike Stodolka is Rick Ankiel lite, a left-handed pitcher taken with the fourth pick of the 2000 draft out of high school who switched to the outfield in 2006. He might yet turn out to be a decent bench bat, as he has shown great plate discipline since converting.
2008 Rick Ankiel, eat your heart out. Stodolka was the fourth pick in the 2000 draft, but after six years of ineffectual pitching interrupted by Tommy John surgery, the left-hander was moved to first base in the 2005 instructional league. Two years later, he has a lifetime .402 OBP and was named the best defensive first baseman in the Texas League last year. He's not really a prospect-his upside looks something like Ross Gload's career-but a major league debut appears more likely than not. You have to appreciate the effort; the Royals did, re-signing him as a minor league free agent with an invite to spring training.
2007 The fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft (probably the weakest draft class of the last 20 years), Mike Stodolka`s career as a pitcher was so fraught with failure that, in 2005, Baseball America named him the worst number-four pick of all time. That year, he was moved to first base; despite not swinging a bat in anger in nearly six years, Stodolka hit for a .339 average with 12 doubles that April. Any performance in High Desert has to be taken with a clump of salt, but there`s a small chance he could develop.
2005 Not to say that Stodolka hasn't panned out quite as well as the Royals would have liked, but last spring Baseball America ranked him as the worst #4 overall pick in history. That was before Stodolka returned from Tommy John surgery, and when he returned, his fastball showed signs of regaining the velocity that he had on draft day but which had never materialized as a pro. The Royals sent him to the AFL, where he fared well. At this point the Royals will take any contribution they can get.
