2012 Outrighted off the Cardinals' 40-man roster after the 2010 season, Nick Stavinoha split his time in Memphis between first base and right field, then decided that Hiroshima would provide a better career path than Oklahoma City. Unlikely to be seen in the majors again.
2011 Stavinoha is yet another surprisingly old, defensively-challenged corner outfielder who would be a first baseman in most organizations—before he’s done, Albert Pujols will have forced more defensive conversions than any Cardinal in history, Cardinal Ximenez included. Stavinoha's arsenal contains such diverse elements as fear, surprise, and an almost fanatical devotion to swinging for the fences, but he lacks the glove or patience to be a suitable corner-outfield reserve. St. Louis outrighted him in November.
2010 Among the collection of corner outfield types vying for time before Holliday's acquisition wiped out most of their opportunities, Stavinoha was the extra guy trying to add to the proposition of finding strength in numbers, an odd body asked to chip in against lefties or pinch-hit. Without Ankiel or another lefty hitter in left to platoon with, his value's limited on this roster; they don't need a spare at first base, and he doesn't hit well enough against righties to encourage La Russa to get old-school and carry "just" seven relievers.
2009 Stavinoha busted out at Triple-A, but in this crowded outfield he's little more than an extra body. He has walked fewer than once every 17 PAs in his pro career, and his burly frame limits him to the corners, so it isn't like he's got a big upside as an everyday player. There won't be room for him on the Opening Day roster, but Stavinoha will likely shuttle back and forth from Triple-A once injuries strike.
2007 An old senior at LSU, Stavinoha was 23 during his last year there and it`s put him behind the eight ball age-wise. Had he torched the Texas League last year like he did the Midwest League in 2005, his ascension would be more clear-cut. A pedestrian walk rate and a somewhat disturbing jump in strikeouts suggest he was overmatched at this level and could stand some more time there. Time, unfortunately, is not on his side. But then, time isn`t really on anyone`s side, is it?
