BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Few baseball events light up Twitter timelines quite like Stanton home runs, which range from moonshots across the Georgia border to missiles that reach the bleachers at Mach 1. Despite logging his first big fly of the season on April 29 and playing in only 123 games, Stanton set a career high with 37 homers, good for second in the National League. And unlike fellow 80-grade sluggers such as Adam Dunn and Miguel Cabrera, Stanton is a defensive asset, worth 7.2 FRAA in right field last year. With a modest dip in his strikeout rate and uptick in his walk rate—both plausible improvements considering his age—Stanton could contend for Most Valuable Player honors in the near future.
2012 It's no secret that PECOTA loves the precocious, and Stanton's projection (.256/.330/.527 in 580 PA) for last year was no exception. Sixteen players, including nine Hall of Famers and Junior Griffey, had achieved those numbers at or before the age of 21, and Stanton added himself to that group in 2011. In addition to his exploits with the bat, Stanton's defense was better than expected, placing him second in FRAA and tying for third in assists among NL outfielders. He improved in the second half, cutting his strikeout-to-walk ratio from 3.20 to 1.75 and raising his OPS by .120.
2011 His first name is actually Giancarlo, which would be a lot cooler to see deployed than yet another Mike Stanton in the history books, but while the other two were pitchers, this one is devoted to their destruction. Comments on BP.com about his being ready to slug .500 last year weren't just glib endorsements, as he promptly demonstrated after his call-up two months into the season: the power isn't just real, it's extraordinary. The change in his strikeout rate in-season after his call-up reflects how much growth potential there still is: after whiffing at an epic 40 percent clip in his first 100 PAs or so, he got his ratio down below 30 percent in the second half. And all of this was without his cutting loose against major-league lefties, which suggests that he'll be a monster once he fully adapts. Stanton's full range of skills transcend just monster slugging feats to come, though; third-base coaches learned his arm is a gun to respect, and his range in right is excellent. Comparisons to Jermaine Dye sell Stanton short—Dye never led his league in homers, but at some point, Stanton will.
2010 You're going to hear a lot about Stanton's strikeouts, which is an amazingly short-sighted thing to focus on with a teenager who has shown this kind of power. There just aren't a lot of teenagers playing at Double-A, and some pitch-recognition problems aren't surprising given his relative inexperience—Stanton could be in college now instead of a couple of steps away from the majors. If the Marlins don't rush Stanton to The Show because they've dealt away every player who makes more than the minimum, Stanton should start the season back at Double-A and try to adjust to more advanced pitching. When he does, his walk rate should skyrocket, as pitchers aren't going to want to pitch to this guy. Stanton's AFL season was cut short by a sore back, but the problem should be resolved by spring training. P.S.: What is it about folks with the surname Stanton naming their kid Mike? This Mike Stanton will be the third in major league history.
2009 Stanton was a second-round pick in 2007 who initially struggled to do anything with the bat after signing, but things came together for him in 2008. He started translating his tremendous power into game production, although there are some red flags: Stanton strikes out a ton, about a third of the time last year, and his improved walk rate was in part due to the league respecting his status as a beast at the plate rather than an improved eye. Though a capable center fielder for now, his frame suggests he will fill out and have to move to right field permanently, but as long as he can cut down on the strikeouts and improve his strike-zone recognition, he'll have the bat to stick there.

2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Past Ben, want to guess what the top five names on the MLB home run leaderboard in 2018 look like? Also, congrats on the upcoming five-year anniversary of TINO. The show got much better in year three after Craig was replaced with Hank the Dog.
(Ben Carsley from The Future)
Giancarlo Stanton. Joey Gallo. Kris Bryant. Miguel Cabrera. Raul Ibanez. (Ben Carsley)
2014-08-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Red Sox' offseason this year resemble their "rebuilding" 2012-2013 offseason or is this a different situation?
(Allen from San Diego)
If I had to compare the coming off-season to any in recent memory it might be 2010. That was the year they signed Carl Crawford and traded for and extended the contract of Adrian Gonzalez. There are going to be some big moves this off-season by the Red Sox and they've got the farm system to make some huge trades (we keep hearing about Giancarlo Stanton but I think Jason Heyward is a possibility too) and a big free agent signing or two. They have payroll flexibility and the need for star power at the major league level. This is going to be a big move winter for Boston. They love the World Series win (obviously) but they want to build a consistent winner and when this season is done they is a good chance they'll have finished in last place two out of the last three seasons. (Matthew Kory)
2014-07-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Carlos Martinez and Oscar Taveras net Giancarlo Stanton?
(Steve from Scarbs from Scarbs)
Well first, let me ask you three questions:

1. Do you think Carlos Martinez and Oscar Taveras are better than Carlos Correa and George Springer?

2. Do you believe the Astros' trade conversation notes, the ones that Deadspin published, that had the Marlins essentially asking for that for Stanton?

3. Do you think that the Marlins were actually willing to make that move, or just blowing off the Astros by saying "that's what we'd start at", knowing the Astros wouldn't touch it?

Personal opinion is that I'd rather have the Correa/Springer package than the Taveras/Martinez package. I don't know the answers to no. 2 and no. 3. I guess my guess is that it wouldn't net Stanton. I'd do it if I were the Cardinals. I don't think the Marlins would. (Sam Miller)
2014-07-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)During your tenure at BP, What was your favorite article that you wrote? Favorite piece you edited?
(Dylan from Boston)
Probably some of the less serious ones. This, for instance: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=19397. Or Internet Commenters Try to Trade for Giancarlo Stanton. I think about this one a lot: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15661. Wasn't the best, but was kind of a turning point, in terms of convincing me that it was okay to cut loose and have fun. My girlfriend gave me the idea, so I owe her for that.

Favorite edit is tough. I edited everything Sam wrote, and everything Sam wrote was great, but it was great when I got it. As an editor, it's always nice to feel like you made a difference in improving an article, and Sam selfishly robbed me of that joy by turning in such clean copy. Maybe Gabe Kapler's piece about "Giving Up the PED Guessing Game": http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21574. Gabe's raw copy wasn't difficult to work with either, but I encouraged him to write it and made a few useful suggestions, and it was a huge hit. Happy that BP played a part in introducing him to a larger audience. (Ben Lindbergh)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gallo will make enough contact in the Bigs for his 80 tool power to play? Is he more Giancarlo Stanton or Adam Dunn?
(childgrambino from Richmond, VA)
Probably split the difference, but I do like the improvements Gallo has made this year. Scouts are becoming more convinced that he's a viable third baseman, too, which is huge. Right now, I'm seeing something like .240-to-.255 with 30+ homers as being a reasonable explanation. If he continues to improve, though ... help us all. (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)How bright is the Cubs future? What year do they win the World Series and who will be the mvp?
(Chris from Nebraska)
This seems like a good one to go out on. It's moderately bright and they win the World Series in 2018. MVP: Giancarlo Stanton. (Bret Sayre)
2014-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see the Cubs trading for a guy like Carlos Gonzalez, Jason Heyward or Giancarlo Stanton in the off-season??
(Tommy from Chicago)
I could definitely see this being the year of loading up. They've been playing better lately and there's more coming from the farm. That said, I still think they'll be going for pitching given their hitting-heavy farm system. (Zachary Levine)

(Shark Normandini from H-Town)

2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the Roman Reigns of baseball?
(cdgoldstein from DC)
I'm not into the wrestlemen stuff at all, so I asked Marc Normandin, who is, what this would entail: "Someone with a monster, limitless ceiling who also looks like a prince."

Giancarlo Stanton would be my answer. Normandin offered healthy Matt Kemp. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)IF you were Theo Epstien, would you see if you could use a Baez-led package to acquire Giancarlo Stanton and extend him? The Cubs have Starlin Castro locked up until 2020(he'll only be 30). And the Cubs also have to prospects/money for Stanton.
(NightmareRec0n from Boston)
Probably not—if only because I likely wouldn't be sold that Castro was my guy just yet and I'd like to see how he responds to Rick Renteria before I trade Baez for anyone. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)How worried are you about Giancarlo Stanton's long term health?
(rickwilkins from chi)
I’m fairly concerned. Stanton has a big and athletic frame, leg issues are a pretty big red flag when it comes to players with his statistical and scouting profile. Those tend to linger around for a while. I still gamble on him this year but in the back of my mind I wonder if he’s going to break down again this year. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)20-team dynasty league. Two of the top three teams about to make a trade: Team A is younger, but lacks enough impact pitching to win a title. Team B is creeping up there in age and injury. Assuming both offenses are stacked and the pitching for both is above average or better, Team A sends Giancarlo Stanton, Matt Cain, and 1-1 pick (aka Byron Buxton) for Team B's Hunter Pence, Yu Darvish, 1-3 pick, and Dylan Bundy... fair trade?
(AJ from Phoenix)
Yeah, that's fair. I prefer Team B's side, but it's fair. (Craig Goldstein)

Marlins and Rangers. Pure speculation is fun. (Bret Sayre)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Aside from Giancarlo Stanton, what are some OF you think might be available for trade that are both above-average regulars and relatively young/cost controlled?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
Cost controlled and above-average who might be available via trade. Hm. Generally speaking, there aren't too many of those types out there at any position. Maybe Gerardo Parra? Granted, I'm not sure if Arizona would/intends to move him, but he fits the bill otherwise. (R.J. Anderson)

2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty League: Giancarlo Stanton for Yu Darvish & Hunter Pence. Team Trading Stanton is loaded with offensive talent, but lacks MLB-ready starting pitching. Team trading Darvish is ravaged by injuries or suspensions, and has a deep rotation? Fair? Buying/Selling someone on the cheap?
(AJ from Phoenix)
Stanton will be at the top of HR lists for years to come, and Darvish will be at the top of strikeout lists for years to come. I'll take the hitter over the pitcher in fantasy every time. (Zach Mortimer)

2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)One sports writer was ruminating over the possibility of a trade of Jurickson Profar for a power hitting outfielder like Jose Bautista. He's in the prime of his career and has a very team friendly contract. Is this even a viable trade possibility. Who loses that trade if it ever happened?
(Trent from El Paso)
I don't think the Rangers will trade Profar for an outfielder who turns 33 in October. Bautista is currently in his prime, but he's likely to be exiting it soon. If the Rangers unload Profar, it's going to be for a younger player with his best years ahead of him – like a Giancarlo Stanton. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Probably a question best for a fantasy chat, but In a 20-team dynasty league: Giancarlo Stanton, Clayton Kershaw, and Patrick Corbin for Yu Darvish, Shelby Miller, Craig Kimbrel, Neftali Feliz, and Byron Buxton. Assuming the trade benefits the needs of both teams, which side would you rather have?
(Dr. Mike from Milwaukee)
Kershaw and Darvish are nearly a wash (maybe a slight edge to Kershaw), and it's hard to bank on Feliz, so it comes down to Giancarlo-Corbin for Miller-Kimbrel-Buxton. I love Kimbrel, but closers are risky business from a dynasty standpoint, and though I prefer Miller to Corbin by a decent measure, I don't think that Buxton bridges the gap to Giancarlo. I feel that prospects are extremely overvalued in dynasty formats, especially when compared to players like Stanton - Stanton is young enough to still qualify as a prospect and already one of the best players in the game, and his future will be even brighter once he escapes the island of misfit toys in Miami.

2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is the lack of lineup protection or shoulder injury going to result in a downgrade to the PECOTA projection for Giancarlo Stanton?
(swarmee from Niceville, FL)
Can't speak for PECOTA, but I didn't understand the people who were just shaking off any notion of lineup protection with regards to Stanton before the season. In fantasy, it really matters as nearly half of all offensive stats are context dependent. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)What is Pujols' value in a keeper league? Is he still a top 10 value for the next 3 years or should I be concerned about the Anahiem park factors and declining numbers and looks to move him for younger players?
(TheCoupons from FL)
There are two conflicting factors when it comes to a player like Albert Pujols. The first is that he is going to decline as he gets older, and the decline has already started. The other side of the coin is that elite players like Pujols are at such a high level to begin with that their declines still can lead to some pretty strong numbers even if they're not elite. My guess is that Pujols can earn in the Top 10 but Top 20-25 might be a safer bet for his Age 33-35 seasons. If you can move Pujols for a Giancarlo Stanton or a Bryce Harper do it, but in recent years more fantasy players gravitate toward the younger stars and this is obviously easier said than done. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)My current keepers are Pujols, Granderson, Wright, Teixeria, Hamilton and Machado in a 12 team H2H 6 man keeper league. Should I be looking to get younger, perhaps targeting a Bryce Harper or Giancarlo Stanton? Or am I safe playing with these players on the wrong side of 30?
(TheCoupons from FL)
Cory Schwartz of MLB Network coined a saying I emphatically agree with: "Flags Fly Forever". Your goal - first and foremost - is to win. Obviously, if you can get a Harper or a Stanton via trade, I like them better than anyone you have an your squad...with the possible exception of Pujols depending on your format. However, that's a pretty strong core that you have in a six-man keeper. Play to win now. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming Cabrera, Trout, and Braun are off the board, who would you take fourth in a OPS league with 4 outfielders and a extra IF slot? Votto? Cano? Pujols? or even reach on Stanton?
(Dylan from Portland,ME)
Hi Dylan. PFM says Albert Pujols, but I'm really high on Joey Votto this year and in an OPS league while I wouldn't go as far to say he's a no brainer he's a strong choice for me. Unlike some of my fantasy colleagues at BP, I think Giancarlo Stanton is a reach here. The BB last year weren't high, and while he may get a few more free passes, the eye doesn't speak to a significant increase in walks. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Brian Goodwin an impact bat?
(Robert from Puerto Rico )
Define impact bat. Goodwin sounds like a 15-20 HR guy long term, though his speed is what could make him a solid, all around fantasy player. We're not talking Giancarlo Stanton if that's what you're asking. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you are the Marlins what's your starting point for Giancarlo Stanton?
(Shane from Miami)
I'm asking for a team's top four prospects, a major league outfielder, the keys to your car, your wallet, your health club membership, your netflix password, and the deeds to any and all vacation properties you own. (Matthew Kory)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the Marlins will do with Giancarlo Stanton? He'll get traded, but when? And what will that trade look like?
(Chris from Toronto)
If I were a betting man I would say he gets moved in a year or two, when his value has diminished some, for a nice package with two headliners. It's hard for me to come up with a reasonable package (or reason for Miami to move him) at this point. (Nick Faleris)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)you think the Marlins would prefer 4 years of Giancarlo Stanton to 6 years of Profar? They very clearly don't care about 2013.
(Keith from Atlanta)
Depends on their scouting and the direction of the team. Stanton will likely provide more value over 4 years than Profar will over 6. Stanton could hit 50+ bombs a season. He's a monster. Profar is the top prospect in baseball, but he's not going to perform like Trout right out of the gate. (Jason Parks)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)It's my hunch that it's only a matter of time until Giancarlo Stanton requests a trade. Given that EVERY team in MLB would jump in on this, who has either the most pieces or the best pieces to match up with the Marlins needs?
(Tom from Seattle )
I think it might take a three-way deal for Miami to get true value, which is why I don't see anything happening anytime real soon, regardless of how unhappy he is with the organization. Also, Tom, on Jon Lester -- I think he's damaged goods. I wouldn't give up value for him right now. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-11-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Starlin Castro for Giancarlo Stanton straight up...who says no more emphatically?
(Nick from South Dakota)
The Marlins. Starlin Castro makes money. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-06-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are the odds now tilted in Giancarlo Stanton's favor that he will have a better career than Jason Heyward?
(Paul from DC)
Oh, definitely. The odds are that Stanton is a better hitter, now, at 22, than Heyward will ever be. (Sam Miller)
2012-04-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)How much does Giancarlo Stanton hate the dimensions of his new ballpark? How much have your projections of his power numbers this season dropped due to his new setting? On a lighter note...what does he think of the monstrosity in left-center?
(Art Vandelay from NY, NY)
Askinq questions in the middle of the workday? And you want to be my latex salesman?!

I went out on a limb and predicted a 50-homer season for Stanton, but between the new ballpark and his nagging knee injuries, I'd cut that down to 25-30 at this point. I'm still looking forward to a bomb that threatens the flamingos at the base of the monstrosity. He might be the only player in the league with the potential to actually damage it. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-04-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)You can choose three young outfielders to start a franchise. Any player with less than three years of service time is eligible. Who do you take and why?
(Hudsonbelinsky from Albany, NY)
Sheesh, this one's going to be tough on the fly...

I'll take Cameron Maybin in center field, for the defense and the potential that he develops more power. Giancarlo Stanton in right field for the glove, arm and the potential to go "arrivederci" on any pitch. And Logan Morrison in left field, because being an epic tweeter is a must for the Rathmans. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)After an extremely disappointing 2011, what are the odds now that Jason Heyward will have a better career than Giancarlo Stanton?
(Paul from DC)
You're talking about two guys who are in their age 22 seasons. Heyward had a rough age 21 due to injuries, but he's certainly young enough to bounce back. Meanwhile, Stanton's collecting his share of injuries - he's got some persistent knee issues which could bother him all year. I'd bet that Stanton winds up with more career homers, but it's still about 50/50 as to which player will have the better career. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Hunter Pence Jeff Francouer on steroids (in a 2.0 version kind of way)? And does Michael Stanton remind you of Dave Kingman?
(Bob from Seattle)
Not sure what you mean by 2.0 or steroids, but I don't think they are really comparable. Pence isn't a superstar, but he is consistent offensively and has actual value with the bat. .280/.330/.470 isn't lighting the world on fire but it's certainly better than the crap Francouer puts up each year. Plus, Pence has speed, steals bases, and looks to be a good fielder. (Eric Seidman)
2010-03-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)I have the 2nd overall pick in an expansion draft... who do you like best of the following: Michael Stanton, Desmond Jennings, Domnic Brown, Aroldis Chapman, or Jenrry Mejia?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
I have to go with the power hitters and take Michael Stanton. Everyone has been raving about him this spring. (John Perrotto)
