2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)With the not-so surprising news that both Oscar Taveras and Gregory Polanco start out in the minors, do either amass 250 AB's this season?
(mprzybylo from Fort Myers)
It's a good possibility for both. I don't see Travis Snider or Jose Tabata as a particularly tough obstacle for Polanco and while Taveras seems blocked, he's one of those prospects where the team will find a place for him when he's ready. (Mike Gianella)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)So is this the year Travis Snider finally has a breakout season?
(Jacob S from Huntsville, AL)
You know, I think it might finally be Snider time. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Do the pirates have the best AAAA roster in the MLB? Best AAA record plus tabata, snider, and Harrison on the MLB team. I'd rather those players be complete busts than hanging around the peripherals
(redguy12588 from Pittsburgh. )
Always going to be a soft spot for Travis Snider in my heart. I really thought he was going to be good. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jason, Is it too early for calls of "free Travis Snider," or is there nothing left to free there? Just seems strange that he has already been "out-platooned" vs righties by the RH Gaby Sanchez
(Sweet Lou from Pittsburgh)
It would be like freeing a domesticated house cat. It's not likely to hurt anybody in the wild, and eventually it will just wander back home to sleep at your feet and shit in a box. (Jason Parks)
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)As a Pirate fan, do I have any reason to think any of our potential outfielders not named Andrew will be above average major league players? i.e. Snyder, Tabata, Marte?
(fgbaloh from Allentown)
fgbaloh, the good news is that those guys are all young. The bad news is... Jose Tabata has teased but seems to have plateaued. Travis Snider is not a bad gamble, but as with Tabata, he looks more like a role player to me. Starling Marte could be something. Scouts love him, PECOTA loves him, I have concerns about his plate discipline. But yeah, there's hope with him. (Geoff Young)
2013-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on two Pirates corner OF, Starling Marte and Travis Snider? Is this finally the year Snider produces? Can Marte have a productive 20-20 season this year?
(MJ from Pittsburgh)
I don't expect much out of Snider. PECOTA says .264 TAv with middling defense, and I don't say otherwise. That's not awful, but it's below-average in an outfield corner. R.J. Anderson wrote about Marte today, so I'd recommend reading what he had to say. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)To Answer Jimmy's question, Travis Snider is the first name that comes to mind. I wasn't as intense into the prospect world that I am now, but the hype and hope from the Jays fans I hang out with was massive on him.
(lpunkari from Fort Frances, Ontario)
That's a good one, but I still have some hope for him. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Any idea why Travis Snider has been so underwhelming? Were his minor league stats not that impressive if adjusted for context, or does he have a specific weakness which minor league pitchers can't exploit but major leaguers can?
(Rex Little from Big Bear, CA)
Snider's minor league stats were extremely impressive, particularly in the context of age and league. With hindsight as our friend, I think we can see that the swing-and-miss issues were real and we needed to see more ability to make adjustments against advanced pitching. He remains very talented but has not shown an ability to adjust to how he is being pitched. That's a big problem and something he will have to overcome to even approach his potential. Even though he is still relatively young, I am not overly optimistic that he's going to suddenly put it all together. (Mark Anderson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)It seems to me that walks for pitchers with tremendous physical tools, such as Rondon's, are sort of like strikeouts for otherwise talented hitting prospects, such as Travis Snider, in that evaluators are too quick to overlook them. I bring this up because I think Rondon is going to come out plunking guys and walking the park. Your thoughts?
(flyingdutchman from Oakland, CA)
I didn't see that at all when I scouted him in 2012. He had bouts of wildness but also showed the ability to correct that problem between hitters. Generally speaking, he was able to get his fastball in the zone and hitters -- even really good hitters -- regularly chased his stuff out of the zone. (Mark Anderson)
2012-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the Pirates give Travis Snider a full look as a starter next year? And as a follow up do you expect him to be exposed as a Quad A if he does get the chance?
(JP from Toronto)
I think they acquired him with the intention of running him out there every day in 2013. Jose Tabata has been a mess, but he's signed long-term (albeit cheaply), so he'll get another chance, probably in left field. The Pirates view themselves as contenders and one of Snider/Tabata needs to show up next year. My money is on Snider. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think given a clean slate and full time job in 2013 Travis Snider will become a potential 30 HR everyday player?
(Neal from DC)
"Will" and "potential" are completely contrary questions. He has the potential. He probably won't, at least for the 30 HRs. Everyday player, yes, and Pittsburgh isn't a bad park for him at all. (Sam Miller)
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you don't mind a fantasy question, who would be your final keeper among Chris Carter, Travis Snider and Justin Smoak? It's a dynasty league, no contracts or time limits.
(Rob from Alaska)
Carter would be my guy. Snider has looked good in Pittsburgh, but I'm more confident in Carter's improvement than Snider's. Smoak... I'm bearish. He's the clear third guy for me. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-07-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your expectations for Travis Snider rest of season? He has recently improved his K:BB ratio at AAA and hopefully that translates to big league success.
(Sizzle from MA)
Snider has a solid minor-league track record and is still young enough to put it together. As Josh Reddick is reminding us all, sometimes it takes a while for everything to click. Will Snider be a star? No, but he should improve on last year's trial run and could have a decent career. He hit .249/.315/.443 in nearly 600 PA for Toronto in 2009 and 2010. That seems like a reasonable baseline for the immediate future. (Geoff Young)
2012-07-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)How long can the Jays stick with Davis in LF? He is below average defensively, and regressing to his normal below average offence
(Mikeleelop from Toronto)
This depends on whether the Jays believe they can contend this year; if they do, a move away from Davis probably happens in the very near future, possibly through a trade. If they don't, then it comes down to when the front office is ready to give Travis Snider another chance. Regardless, barring a major surge from Davis, I think you'll see someone else manning LF for the Jays by the end of the month. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Travis Snider and his potential impact if the Jays actually let him know he won't be demoted the second he goes 0-4.
(Ethan from Pittsfield)
I'm optimistic. He seems first in line for a call-up if a spot opens up, and he's looking great in the minors. His power is back, his approach looks good, and he'd be getting called up to a good lineup and park. It's possible he's a Quad-A guy, but I don't view him that way. (Derek Carty)
2012-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Travis Snider and Domonic Brown would succeed if they were in new organizations, or are their problems intrinsic?
(William from (Portland))
Thatís the basis for change of scenery trades. Itís hard to say and dangerous to assume without knowing more about the Snider and Brown situations, though I think Snider would look better if he got away from the American League East entirely. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-03-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Of the Jays three failed players in 2011 Travis Snider, Colby Rasmus, Kyle Drabek, and Adam Lind, who do you think will put out the most production in 2012?
(Steve from Canada)
I was surprised to see Snider go down this week, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Drabek this week, as he looked really good. I'll go with Drabek. I see little reason to be optimistic about Rasmus or Lind. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any hope left for Travis Snider?
(Marissa from Calgary)
He loves the month of March. I'm not ready to give up on him but he's looking more like a platoon outfielder than an everyday middle of the lineup guy as we thought he would be a few years ago. (Jason Collette)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Snider or Eric Thames in LF for the Jays? between the two who has a bigger bat this season? avg. and power wise.
(CheeCheesh(Starsky) from Canada)
I like Thames better, simply because I don't have a good answer for what happened to Snider this past year, and anyone I've tried to talk to who might be close to the situation has been tight-lipped about it. I like Thames's bat anyway, though, and as long as he gets some ABs, he's a great AL-only pick. And if he's playing full-time, he's deep-mixed-worthy too. That said, Snider has bigger power upside. (Derek Carty)
2011-11-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on grantland.com so far?
(Bill Simmons from LA)
How can you not like free content? Since I'm pretty Goldstein when it comes to other sports, I read the site selectively, but there's been plenty of good baseball stuff there from Jonah, Rany, and others. I enjoy Klosterman and the occasional spot of Simmons, and Katie Baker is great. As I tweeted the other day, things have reached the point where I enjoy Andy Greenwald's Walking Dead reviews for Grantland more than I do the episodes themselves. Which has been more frustrating: the second season of Walking Dead, or the first four seasons of Travis Snider? (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-11-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Is it still too early to call Travis Snider a bust?
(R.A. Wagman from Toronto)
Yep. Frustrating as hell, but still, somehow, only 23. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What happened to Travis Snider? He's still fairly young but he hasn't demonstrated the ability to hit major league pitching. Is it almost time to declare him a AAAA player?
(R.A. Wagman from Toronto)
You're the Jays fanatic, maybe you should be telling me.

I look at Snider and I see a guy who's hit .248/.307/.423 in nearly 900 plate appearances. His plate discipline and ability to make contact definitely need some work, but I can't discount what his wrist injuries and the Jays' jerking him up and down may have done to him. I want to see what he does over a 500-PA season before I think about slapping the Quad-A label on him. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat) Can the Jays get up there with the Yankees/Sox/Rays? Lawrie looks great, but they're still short pitching, would Darvish get them there?
(Steve R from Waterloo, ON)
It depends if you believe that Darvish is a #1, or that they'll be up for spending Darvish money. I have doubts about both. Either way, he's not enough. They still need additional help for the rotation, the bullpen, and the lineup. You would, in particular, like them to figure out whether Adam Lind and Travis Snider are ever going to join the first ranks of offensive players. (Steven Goldman)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see in Travis Snider's future?
(Sean from Edmonton)
I wish I knew. He's like my new Brandon Wood where I keep saying I like the guy and he keeps letting me down. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is is too early to give up on Travis Snider developing into a scary middle of the order bat?
(Billy from Toronto)
Yes, its too early to give up on him fulfilling that role. I think he still has a very high upside. (Jason Parks)
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Snider will still develop into a scary middle of the order bat, True or False?
(User from BattersBox.ca)
I'll say true--he's still just 23. He hasn't made it easy to remain a believer, though. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-04-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Snider and Adam Jones are piling disappointing starts on top of disappointing careers. Do you think either or both will turn it around?
(Rex Little from Big Bear CA)
Well, KG tells me Adam Jones is better than Willie Mays, so he has to turn it around, right? (Of course, that's just his standard intro into how average players today are better conditioned, better trained, etc. -- of course Willie Mays born at the same time as Adam Jones would be better than Adam Jones).

Seriously, though, I fear Adam Jones is turning into Corey Patterson, and I'm losing my optimism about him. Snider is younger and has a better chance of turning things around. (Ken Funck)
2011-04-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'd love your thoughts on a couple of players that seemed consistently ready to break out but never have - Chris Iannetta and Travis Snider. Will these guys get the full year to play and establish their worth or will circumstances yet again derail them?
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
Big fan of Iannetta, who can provide significant offense and adequate defense. He had a nice season in 2008 but has been stuck behind better receivers for the past two years. With no such obstacle in place this year, the job is his. As for Snider, I'm just not sold, but it's possible that his injuries have held him back. With the move of Lind to first base, I do think the Jays want to give him a full shot, though. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)It looks like Travis Snider will finally get a chance to get everyday ABs. I'm very optimistic on a breakout year for him. Do you agree or disagree? He showed glimpses of his significant potential last year.
(Greg from Kelowna, BC)
I share your optimism. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Cory, is Travis Snider worth holding onto for $5 in a dynasty auction league (12 team mixed, standard rosters) for this year? He would be no more than my 4th or 5th OF. I like his upside but playing time and performance are concerns. What do you think?
(sean from TX)
He's got some work to do against lefties and with making contact in general, but he's only 23 and has already established good power and the ability to steal a few bases. I like him for $5 as a 5th OF... let's not forget, he's still only 23. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Marc, 2 Scoresheet keeper league questions. Team 1: Protect Tim Hudson or Sean Marshall? Team 2: Pick one from among Vernon Wells, Travis Snider, Adam Lind and Felix Pie. Thanks for the chat!
(rrydelek from Maryland)
You might want to ask Rob McQuown for help on this one. I'm still just learning Scoresheet and I expect to get destroyed this year. Rob knows what he's doing. (Marc Normandin)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Buying or selling on Travis Snider?
(Greg27 from Toronto)
Still believe. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Travis Snider still be a stud? He's only 22.
(Renegade from Toronto)
I still believe. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)1) What's the offensive ceiling for Travis Snider? 2) Do you have a guess at his triple-slash next year, provided he stays healthy? 3) Care for a heat peanut?
(Heat Peanuts from bag)
Ceiling: .310.390.540
2011: .275.350.500

No thanks on the heat peanut, a name which always makes me think of the bean bags that my wife heats up in the microwave to apply topically when she has a sore muscle. (Ken Funck)
2010-06-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is most likely to maintain his offensive gains this year in 2011: Kelly Johnson, David Freese or Travis Snider?
(Nico Toscani from Above the Law)
"You guys think you're above the law... well you ain't above mine!" CLASSIC

Travis Snider. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does local Northwest high school slugger Josh Sale compare favorably to another Northwest guy, Travis Snider. All bat, little else?
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
Yes. Very good comp. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any word on Travis Snider's injury. He was just starting to hit a groove before he went down.
(cubfan131 from IA)
None. "Sore wrist" but there's been no clarification beyond that. The Jays have indicated that while he's down in Dunedin rehabbing that they think he could be back soon, even the minimum. Until we see him hitting, we're not going to get much more info ... unless some sources start returning my calls. (Will Carroll)
2010-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)All-Star appearances for Travis Snider, 0.5, Over or Under?
(Ron from Vancouver)
I'll take the over on that, please. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have Travis Snider, Adam Jones, Colby Rasmus, Nate McLouth and Hunter Pence in a 10-team mixed league - how good/worthless do you expect that outfield to be by the end of the season?
(ravenight from Boston)
I think Pence, McLouth and Jones are definite candidates to improve on their poor starts. Colby Rasmus has been doing a better job with the strike zone this year and seems to have a better understanding of pitches he can do something with, so I think he's finally going to have that breakout year we've been waiting for. Snider I'm hopeful for, but if you make me pick one he's probably the one I think the development will be slowest for. (Marc Normandin)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please tell me this is the year that Travis Snider starts banking some of the potential he showed in the minors. Granted it's only 3 games, but this season is looking a lot like 2009.
(Sea Bass from Outside Providence)
This is the year. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Travis Snider? I know you were very high on him last year.
(Mark from Cleveland)
Still very high! (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)So, Travis Snider, does he have the year this year that everyone thought he'd have last year?
(bctowns from Chicago, IL)
I'm guilty of thinking Lind would be the 2010 guy and Snider would be the 2009 one. Perhaps their roles have been reversed. He'll need to cut down on his strikeouts if he wants to pick things up though. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you still feel like Travis Snider will develop into an all-star calibre player?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
I really do. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Travis Snider the next Adam Dunn?
(Ron from Vancouver)
Way better pure hitter with well above-average power, but not crazy-Dunn power. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Travis Snider have the ability to breakout like his fellow teammate Adam Lind, who experienced many of the same performance issues Snider has faced (K vs. LHP in particular) as a rookie?
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
Yes, and maybe even more so. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)While I'm usually a JP supporter I'm growing tired of his inability to fill the LF/DH hole. Shannon Stewart, Brad Wilkerson, Dave Dellucci, Kevin Millar and Russ Adams clearly aren't the answer so what would you do?
(Bill from Toronto)
I think he absolutely had the right idea with Travis Snider at the outset of the year, but it hasn't worked out yet. He didn't hit in ~100 PA, he had some back problems, he's missed a month. He's only 21, so it's far too early to give up hope that he can be the long-term solution there. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be the best in 5 years out of these guys: Justin Upton, Jay Bruce, Evan Longoria, Ryan Braun, Travis Snider?
(Mike from Utica,NY)
Upton, with Longoria close behind. Upton should be in the home-run contest; he hits ridiculously impressive shots. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-19 15:00:00 (link to chat)Since the spring box scores are meaningless, can you give us a couple prospects that are impressing or surprising scouts so far?
(Rob from Alaska)
These are actually guys with good stats, but Nats top prospect Jordan Zimmerman has been earning some rave reviews, and I heard from a couple of guys about the Travis Snider home run off Ian Kennedy that left Legends Field -- it was supposedly an awe inspiring bomb. I don't want to give away too much, as I'm talk to a lot of scouts over the next few days about what's impressing them for some articles next week. Stay tuned. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-02-16 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Kevin, You have Travis Snider as your #5 prospect. What kind of projections do you have for him for 2009? Will he be an everyday fixture in the Jays lineup this season?
(Matt from Baltimore)
If he was the best offensive player on the Blue Jays team this year, I would not be shocked at all. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina my friend read me my heroscope about a month ago and it said I will recieve very good news on Feb. 10th. I haven't got any yet. Could you tell me something awesome about the Jays?
(dogtothedog from Toronto)
You're still tied for first place? Seriously, though, there are players to look forward to coming into view. J.P. Arencibia and Travis Snider, certainly, maybe Brett Cecil and Ricky Romero... we can all hope Aaron Hill's good to go, right, and there's nothing that say he can't right now this instant... OK, I'm stretching here. A little less than eight hours to go, maybe it's something non-baseball you're supposed to hear. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can we get a one-sentence 2009 Travis Snider preview/prediction?
(mschroeder14 from WI)
He could have enough trouble making contact that he has trouble hitting for average and gets into some frustrating slumps, but he's young enough to make big strides if the Jays show more patience than they have did Adam Lind. ...Switched to Squeeze at random. Does the guitar solo from "In Quintessence" ever get nominated as one of the best ever? (Steven Goldman)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for chatting Jay - two part question. 1) Would the following be an equitable trade - Jays send Lyle Overbay and Russ Adams to the Mariners for Jarrod Washburn and some cash? 2) What possible excuse could JP Ricciardi put forth this year for not having Travis Snider in the opening day lineup?
(rawagman from Toronto)
No, it's not enough going to the Mariners, as Adams is without value given his shortcomings on both sides of the ball.

As for Snider, he had a very nice cup of coffee last year and he's not far off, but he's got less than 150 AB above Double-A, and just 500 above A-ball, so I don't think there's harm in some seasoning at Triple-A. But I look forward to an obfuscation from J.P. nonetheless, as those are worth the price of admission. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)After each promotion this year, I kept expecting Travis Snider to falter. Obviously he hasn't, but I wonder if the strikeouts are going to catch up at some point. Is this kid going to simply be a stud with the bat from day 1?
(ericmilburn from San Francisco)
Yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-08-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any idea who the PTBNL is in the Stairs trade? what should I expect out of Travis Snider the rest of the way?
(Taylor from Toronto)
Don't know who the PTBNL is. I wouldn't set the bar for Travis Snider too high for the rest of the way...he's an outstanding prospecet, but is just 20, and while he's been hot at AAA (.344 in 18 games) his numbers at AA weren't overwhelmingly great (.262/.357/.461). He is also carrying that 61/154 BB/K ratio. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)F-Mart or Travis Snider?
(Jon from Maroneck)
Different kinds of players, hard to compare. Snider just on health. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Strictly in terms of offense, is Travis Snider a top 5 prospect for next year?
(Sam from Portland)
In terms of hitting alone? Yes, top five easily. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jaff Decker is off to a ridiculous start in AZL. Can I drop a Travis Snider comp on him?
(preams from San Diego)
Hmmmm. 42nd overall pick in the draft has a great 11-game streak in the complex league and you want to say he's like one of the best hitting prospects in all of baseball . . . yeah, I'm going to have to say that's kinda nuts. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)True or False: In a panic, the Jays will rush Travis Snider to the majors?
(Jon from DC)
False. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Jeremy Hellickson's excellent start this year?
(Mike from Utica)
As fantastically shocking as the numbers are, it surprises me very little that Jeremy has been able to succeed in six starts. He's, in a sense, the pitcher's version of Travis Snider -- it's possible to be so polished that normal development patterns just don't fit. I would like Tampa to consider moving Hellickson up very soon, because it's clear he's just too polished for this level. Yes, if you leave him he'll regress to the FSL mean a bit, but why not challenge him rather than to simply let him regress. Hellickson has worked so hard the last few years on his strength (which has resulted in a velocity uptick), in his endurance and on his breaking ball, and they are paying dividends. Simply, it's time to move him up, and it was probably time before his first start. (Bryan Smith)
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat)What is going on with Travis Snider? I know that he's young for AA, but he was striking out alot when he was in Dunedin too? Is this just a factor of missing most of spring training because of an injury?
(greg from toronto)
That's probably part of it, and he just needs time to sort of adjust and make New Hampshire home. I'm certainly not worried about him, and I commend the Blue Jays for sending him to Double-A. This is a guy that has never really struggled at the plate, so we'll learn a lot about him in the coming weeks. Here's to betting he bounces back. (Bryan Smith)
2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've heard the Blue Jays plan to start Travis Snider at AA and skip the Florida State League. Thoughts?
(Tim from Portland, OR)
Yes, it's true, and I don't think he'll have any problems raking there. That kid can really, really hit. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, KG! I see Chris Marrero as a future .280/.360/.600 type hitter, but all professional prospect mavens have CM well below the (seemingly) very similar Travis Snider. Why the universal caution about Chris?
(Andrew from Potomac, Md.)
You really want to go around projecting .600 slugging percentages . . . for anyone? Ranking Chris Marrero at No. 28 is hardly being overly cautious -- that's a great ranking. I just think, based on conversations with those in the industry, that Snider has that special quality to him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)wait, you're still here?? tell me the one guy on this list who you think is the most controversial placement (whether above or below the general consensus), and then defend your ranking of him.
(joonpahk from Cambridge MA)
I'm still here! So far, based on the chat questins and my email, the answer are.

1. Jacob McGee at 40. Again, that says he's the 4th best LHP in the minors, so it's not shabby at all. Questions about his secondary stuff hurt him.

2. Clay at 2, Joba at 4. Obviously, with those rankings, I think both will be great, but Buchholz has the better all-around arsenal, better command, and Joba still has some dings on his healthy history. Mostly this is just the superfan subset of Yankees fans bitching becuase a Red Sox guy is ahead of a Yankee guy.

3. Lars Anderson at 100. He's a first baseman who's hit, but hasn't mashed. I just don't see it, and scouting views I've gotten just like him and don't love him. There is also an aspect of the superfan subset of Red Sox fans bitching because thier guy is lower than expected.

4. Travis Snider in the single digits. I don't get why this is surprising. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please settle an argument for me. Based on their pure hitting abilty and nothing else, Travis Snider's ceiling is as good as Jay Bruce's. True or false? Thanks!
(Ken from Albany)
False. Snider's build leaves his power potential a little behind Bruce. Snider is really built like Matt Stairs, and while his potential is certainly higher than that, it's a frame that is limiting. Jay Bruce is the top guy in the minor leagues, though, and there really aren't many more that Snider's offensive ceiling comes behind. (Bryan Smith)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)is it a coincidence that 2 of the teams with the weaker farm systems - TOR and OAK (until the latest trades) both espoused a low risk drafting philosophy which involves taking college players with the top picks. Beane was Riccardi's mentor was he not? Can we hope to see a change in their respective approaches?
(prhood from Canada)
Travis Snider (heck, most of the Toronto '07 top picks), Trevor Cahill, etc. -- I think you've already seen a change. The moneyball way of drafting is a dead issue folks. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Other than Travis Snider (and including the 2007 draft picks), are there any prospects in the Jays system that have star potential? If so, then who?
(greg from toronto)
No; not applicable. (Kevin Goldstein)
