2002 Corey Wright has five of John Sickels’s seven skills. Unfortunately, the two he lacks—hitting for average and hitting for power—are among the three most important. Scouts often fuss too much over strikeouts; in Wright’s case, if he could cut his whiffs by half, the increased contact would produce enough base hits to make him a handy commodity.
2001 He's a blazing fast center fielder who played tremendous defense this year. Offensively, Corey Wright has Brett Butler’s skill set but is still learning how to lay down a bunt. He probably won’t hit enough to make the majors, but if he can find an additional 15 singles a year somewhere, he has a chance at a career.
2000 Nobody's talking about Wright, but his walk rate blows me away. In the Appalachian League in 1998, 25% of his plate appearances resulted in walks. Last year, it was 17%. He looks like the second coming of Max Bishop. One of two things will happen to Wright at this point. Either he'll bomb as he gets to higher levels with pitchers who can actually throw strikes, or he'll learn to complement his batting eye by hitting the ball hard once in a while. Given his age, there's at least some hope for the latter.
1999 Unheralded 12th-round draft pick out of Workman High School in La Puente, CA. Why is he here, instead of the back of the chapter with the other one-liners? Only because I was awed by those walk totals and translated OBP. Yeah, it's 178 PAs in rookie ball, and it doesn't mean anything. But if he goes on to become the next Ted Williams, or even the next Warren Newson, remember you read about him here first.
