2011 Carlos Rosa is a work in progress as a starter-turned-reliever still trying to figure out how best to use his "stuff" out of the bullpen.
2010 In 2009, fastball/slider pitcher Rosa boosted the ho-hum strikeout rate he had as a starter into something eye-popping as a reliever at Omaha. With the new focus on relieving, his fastball jumped from 94 mph to 97. Unfortunately, he was less effective overall, mainly from issuing more walks. When a pitcher is converted from starting to relieving, he's told to "just let it fly." Rosa let it fly to excess, perhaps, not worrying as much about command as much as he should have. He'll get another chance to make good this season.
2009 One of the few prospects who found his way into the system from the Dominican before the Royals beefed up their presence there under Moore, Rosa had the best season of any KC pitcher in the high minors. The righty's fastball can get into the mid-90s and features natural sink, his slider gained consistency over the course of the season, and he possesses a decent change. With those kinds of tools and results that show he's figuring out how to pitch, Rosa is a dark-horse candidate to earn a few Rookie of the Year votes, provided he's healthy—a forearm strain ended his season a couple of weeks early, and it was rumored that the Marlins passed on him when discussing the Jacobs trade because of health concerns.
2008 Since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2005, Rosa has emerged as the team's best Latin American prospect. He pitched through a pulled oblique muscle for part of last year, which brought down his numbers, but he has good control of a three-pitch mix and is positioned to get a callup at mid-season should any of the incumbent starters falter. Long-term, he's a number-four starter.
