YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Speed merchant Robinson had his usual successful campaign as a basestealer, but there’s little else to his game that projects as major-league quality. The Royals seem to have thousands of players like Robinson: a speedy outfielder with no power and a poor approach at the plate that limits his ability to get on base.
2012 Another outfielder with speed to burn and zero pop in his bat. He covers a ton of ground in center and generally plays an excellent defense, but needs to improve his contact rate and learn to mix in a few more walks before he can seriously be considered a future contributor.
2011 Every system has that Robinson-esque player, the center fielder with top-of-the-line speed whom you hope can learn how to play baseball. In 2010, Robinson began to do just that, hitting more than 40 points above his career average in his first exposure to Double-A pitching thanks in part to a career-low strikeout rate. Robinson showed plenty of progress, but he still needs to make more; with a sub-standard walk rate, he doesn't fit at the top of the order, and his power is non-existent. Though he had a good season, all Robinson really did was prove that he's ready for Triple-A.
2010 A second stint at Wilmington didn’t improve Derrick Robinson’s numbers; he still has blazing speed, and scouts remain intrigued by his tools, but Double-A will make or break him.
2009 Robinson is the Royals farmhand among the position players with the most impact potential other than Hosmer and Moustakas, although he's got miles to go. As a switch-hitter with blinding speed—he stole the third-most bases in the minors last year—and a true center fielder, he inspires visions of Willie Wilson, but at this point he's far more athlete than baseball player. The Royals hope he plays his way to Double-A by season's end; to do so, Robinson will have to cut down on the strikeouts considerably.
2008 Derrick Robinson was a fourth-round pick in 2006 who was lured away from a football scholarship with supplemental first-round money. The fastest player in that year's draft, his game is all speed as his bat is purely theoretical at this point.
