2013 Robinson is your standard-issue backup outfielder, the kind of player often described as “fundamentally sound” to hide the fact he’s more solid than exceptional in the field, and sub-par at the plate. He draws a few walks and slaps a few singles, but has little power. Given that he has both a lower ceiling and a more yellowed birth certificate than Adron Chambers, Robinson will likely be spending another year in Memphis.
2012 Shane Robinson missed most of the first half of the season after a scary outfield collision with teammate Andrew Brown left him with a broken orbital bone in his face. The fracture—a less severe version of the horrible injury that ended the career of former Cardinal Juan Encarnacion—required surgery. But Robinson returned, posted an impressive .314/.385/.505 line in August, then received a September promotion to St. Louis.
2011 Let’s hope diminutive outfielder Shane Robinson enjoys the Beale Street blues, since his inability to learn how to work his way on base means he’ll spend another summer in Memphis.
2010 Organizational soldier Shane Robinson is striving for fifth outfielder's work in a profession that doesn't use them, but he has range and speed going for him.
2009 The Cardinals credit Robinson's breakthrough last year to a better understanding of what kind of offensive player he needs to be. The diminutive outfielder had a swing more befitting a slugger than a leadoff man, but adapting to his skills produced excellent results. Robinson's walk rate actually declined, however, and there's no way he can survive as at the top of the order while drawing a free pass once very four games or so. It's hard to view his Double-A performance as fundamental improvement until he proves otherwise.
