2008 After busting out in the Oakland system, Rheinecker missed most of the 2005 season with a mysterious finger injury and was was downright awful after coming to the Rangers in 2006. He missed the first two months of 2007 with back troubles, and upon returning to the starting rotation in the second half, was awful once again (6.21 ERA). He finally found some success after moving to the pen in late August, striking out 15 in 12 2/3 innings while allowing just four runs. Rheinecker is your classic crafty lefty, with deception in his delivery and a darting fastball that gives lefty batters fits. Despite some ugly overall numbers, he just might have a future as a LOOGY.
2007 Lefties were just about worthless against Rheinecker in 2006, but righties dominated him, hitting .392/.425/.552, and he saw a lot more of them than he did the lefties. In spite of being unmercifully creamed by the majority of hitters, he managed to pitch well at home, posting a 3.24 ERA under the Texas lights. A leveling off of his .371 BABIP is going to make him look better in 2007. As a 28-year old lefty, it`s not too late for Rheinecker to cobble together a big league career.
2005 Rumors in the game are part of its fun, and one of its guiltier pleasures is slyly making a player appear more of a prospect than he is. Rheinecker gets mentioned as someone who won't get traded but his is not the sort of talent that breaks a deal. Perhaps it makes him seem more valuable, but he's a standard-issue organizational lefty. He's worked on diversifying his assortment, improving his slider and the movement on his cut fastball, but he's no more likely to get any big league consideration this year than he was in the last. If he is ever dealt, you can expect his employer to eventually wonder what the fuss was all about.
