BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 A year after signing a six-year, $106 million deal, Reyes was sent to Toronto in the November blockbuster. Despite a rough year defensively, he hushed critics who claimed that he couldn’t stay healthy by appearing in 160 games, his highest total since 2007. Reyes maintained his stolen-base rate as well. Now he'll face a new batch of injury question marks surrounding his ability to avoid leg ailments on the Rogers Centre turf. Assuming he can stay off the disabled list, and that the -17 FRAA that marred his 2012 WARP is an outlier, Reyes should provide significant surplus value in 2013, with his paycheck holding steady at $10 million for one more year before spiking to $16 million in 2014 and $22 million thereafter.
2012 Here at BP, we have an injury database that shows the history for each player's maladies. Under Jose Reyes, the word “hamstring” appears 11 times, including two entries in 2011 that cost him more than a month's worth of games. He won the batting title last year—offending many by taking himself out of the last game of the season following a bunt single in the first inning—but this is still a player who has averaged just 98 games in the last three years, and the only way he stayed healthy in the second half of 2011 was to simply stop running. Before the All-Star break, Reyes had 15 triples and 30 stolen bases. After, he had just one and nine, respectively. The Marlins believed enough in Reyes' health to sign him for the next six years, bumping incumbent All-Star shortstop Ramirez to third base in the process.
2011 Reyes continued to be hounded by a variety of maladies in 2010. He was diagnosed with a thyroid condition that delayed his debut in the spring, then injured his oblique in July. The latter injury was slow to heal, hampering his production until the season ended. His 2010 looked much like his 2007 outside of a walk rate that was half of what he'd achieved three years earlier. The talent pool at shortstop is shallow enough that Reyes doesn't need to walk to out-produce the competition, but to qualify as one of the top players in the league at the position he will need to bump his on-base percentage back up, especially since he has never been a great defender. Although neither Reyes nor the Mets' brass discussed it publicly, whispers about his uncertain future after 2011 could be heard throughout much of the offseason. As long as his plate discipline has not regressed permanently, he'll be worth keeping.
2010 Reyes is expected to be fully healthy by spring training, but so much of his value revolves around elite-level speed that there are reasons to be worried about what he's lost to his recent injury. His over-the-top speed is why he hits 18 triples a year instead of eight, and why he steals 60-70 bases a year instead of 30, and even the slightest slowing down would hurt his value significantly.
2009 The Most Exciting Player in Baseball turned in a superlative season, becoming the eighth player in major league history to produce 50-plus steals and 70-plus extra-base hits in a year; Hanley Ramirez is the only other shortstop to do so. Reyes also led the NL in hits, posting the second 200-plus campaign in team history, and established new Mets career marks in both triples and steals. For the second straight year, he ranked second among major league shortstops in games played, and for the second straight year had his worst offensive month in September. One of the priorities for the offseason was to find a backup capable of spelling The Franchise every now and again. Fresh legs in September might mean the difference in a playoff hunt for the Mets and an MVP award for Reyes.
2008 Reyes took a lot of blame for the Mets' late-season collapse, and for good reason-he hit just .205/.279/.333 in September. There's no specific explanation for it; he wasn't hurt, he wasn't getting pitched any differently, it was just one of those things, a sentiment supported by his unlucky .220 BABIP on the month. Looking at the eleven months of Reyes's career that preceded that one, we expect he'll be just fine. The question is what type of player will he be? He wasn't able to repeat his 2006 power surge last year, but he continued to improve his walk rate and developed into the best basestealer the game has seen since the thieving heyday of the 1980s. Reyes won't turn 25 until June, so his skills are still coalescing; more importantly, they're also still improving.
2007 Speaking of Rickey, the Greatest Leadoff Hitter of All Time worked with Reyes during spring training trying to impart a greater appreciation of the strike zone. This would seem akin to bringing Babe Ruth to camp to reveal the virtues of power-hitting to Joey Gathright, and, indeed, these sorts of interventions rarely amount to much. It would seem at first as though the message got through, but this would be misunderstanding Reyes`s transformation from out-machine to useful offensive player. Reyes`s unintentional walk rate increased from 4 percent of his plate appearances to 7 percent, but he actually saw fractionally fewer pitches per trip, 3.60 in 2006 versus 3.62 the year before. Simultaneously, Reyes`s isolated power increased from .114 to .187, which largely reflects his home run rate increasing from one every 99 at-bats to one every 34. Reyes did not become more selective in the sense of working the count; rather, his pitch recognition improved, leading to his guessing correctly on a greater percentage of the pitches that he saw. The results represent the maturation of a ballplayer rather than a one-year change of philosophy, and are thus much more likely to be sustained.
2005 It's easy to point to Reyes' hamstring injuries as the reason for his lousy 2004, but the fact is that he's been rushed by the Mets. He isn't ready to hit at the major league level, and his power and batting eye both need serious work. With so many stopgap middle-infield candidates, the Mets should let Reyes go to Norfolk for at least half a season so that he can continue developing as a hitter. He can still be a star.
