Is Bautista really the opening day RF, and if yes, would he be the worst one in history? (Eddie from Newmarket)	Oh, I don't know, there have been some pretty ghastly Opening Day lineups. Miguel Dilone was the A's OD starter in right field in 1979, for example. I'd expect some attentive scrounging from the Jays when we get to the end of March. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-27 14:00:00	Christina, Willie Bloomquist continues to get ABs at center while Ichiro is back in right and Jeremy Reed sits on the bench. Instead of sending Willie to the bench the guys at Lookout Landing suggested using Bloomquist as SS instead of Betancourt. I'm inclined to think Bloomquist shouldn't play everyday, but if he is going to, where do you think Willie would cause the least damage. (Nick from NYC)	"The Revenge of Willie Bloomquist" sounds like a spoof of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," but I think it's a case of the Mariners and many of their fans getting their just desserts for forever overrating Willie Bloomquist. There's a fundamental cowardice of leadership when you can be cowed by Willie Bloomquist into treating paying customers to an awful lot of Willie Bloomquist. Apparently it's Willie's world, and the Mariners are just dying in it. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-24 13:00:00	Regarding Melky, I'm ALL for bringing up Gardner and giving him his shot (which means starting, consistently, right off the bat). But I'm not all that keen on trading Melky. For one, I don't think he'd bring much of interest back, I don't think his value could be much lower than it is now. What could he bring in return? Whereas his value to the Yankees as a 4th OF is probably higher, given that he has the range and arm for all 3 OF positions. I say bring up Gardner and start him, keep Melky around as the extra OF and see what happens over the rest of the year. Over the offseason, make a decision on who is going to be the CF going forward and decide whether the other player is in their plans; if not, package them and trade them for something useful. (cult of basebaal from Los Angeles Anaheim of Pasadena)	Cult of Baseball (COB?) is pointing out something I advocated both at YES and the NY Sun today, which is that the Yankees have the ability to get better in two ways at once - promote Brett Gardner and deal off Melky as part of a package for help. I'd be satisfied with the first half of that, as COB proposes here, and just trying Gardner for a couple of weeks leading up to the trade deadline. I don't like to speculate about specific trades, but part of what was in my mind is that the Mariners apparently intend to deal Bedard and haven't had a complete OF set in years. With Ichiro back in right and Jeremy Reed unlikely to hold the position, the CF job is open. Obviously Melky wouldn't make the trade by himself, but he could be part of the package... 2008-03-28 14:00:00	The Rays have been rumored to be looking at Murton, Willits, and Reed from Seattle. Which seems more likely? And in ease case what do you see the Rays having to give up? (Tommy from OPS,FL)	None of those guys are a great fit given that what the Rays really need is a right fielder, and those three are either hitters or more left field types, lacking great arms. Of them, I'd probably choose Willits, who can provide some OBP and is the best defender of the group. Jeremy Reed was our #3 prospect three years ago. 2005-12-14 20:00:00	Hey Jonah - What are your thoughts on the rumored CF plan B for the Sox Reed-Clement? Even though Clement had a rough second half, he is a league avearge innings eater at a reasonable price in this market. Reed had a terrible rookie season. It would seem like the Sox should do better for Clement. Assuming you are taking in a fair amount of M's games now, how is Reed's D? (Tom Fratamico from Burlington, VT)	Reed posted a .252 EqA in a supposedly terrible year--you need to take Safeco into account rather than just glancing at his raw stats. Meanwhile he posted a season that was roughly league-average defensively according to BP's metrics, and has been rated as above average by some othber sources. This was in his FIRST full season, as a 24-year-old? Do people really expect rookies to perform like Pujols? Reed plays a premium defensive position effectively, he's got a good minor league track record, he's dirt cheap and young. I actually like Matt Clement and think he'd be a fantastic addition for the Mariners. But if Reed merely follows a normal growth curve, he'll peak around a .280-.290 EqA, which is excellent for a CF. If he takes any kind of significant step up beyond the normal growth curve, we could be talking about a .300 EqA guy with plus defense in center. That's a slam dunk All-Star. (Jonah Keri)
