YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 On August 18, in the second game of a doubleheader at home against the Cubs, Redmond made his big-league debut. That kept the Reds from becoming the first team since the 2003 Mariners to use only five starting pitchers in a season. The minor-league veteran is durable and consistent, having made at least 24 starts and pitched at least 145 innings in each of his first seven full seasons. Acquired from Atlanta last July for Paul Janish, Redmond is big but doesn't throw hard, possessing what Kevin Goldstein called "plus-plus command of sub-standard stuff." He projects as a fifth starter or long reliever at best.
2012 The Braves acquired Redmond in exchange for Tyler Yates in 2008. After two pedestrian seasons in Triple-A, Redmond pitched well enough in 2011 to earn a 40-man roster spot. Despite being a physical presence (6-foot-3, 215 pounds), Redmond is all about pitchability. His fastball has average velocity and he throws a changeup and curveball to keep batters guessing. He relies on throwing strikes and avoiding walks. In another organization, he might sneak into the rotation as a number five starter.
2011 Three years removed from being swapped to the Braves by the Pirates for Tyler Yates, Redmond has spent the last two seasons pitching at Triple-A Gwinett, and he's lined up for a third tour of duty in 2011. He's a prospect inasmuch as a crafty strike-thrower who keeps his team in every game can be, the kind of guy who could pitch for numerous teams over the next decade, getting an emergency start here and there while doing nothing particularly good, but also nothing to embarrass himself. In short, there's little here to be excited about, but we thought we'd let you know about Redmond so when his name someday shows up on a list of probable starters you don't feel any anxiety about having missed something.
2010 Acquired from the Pirates in 2008 for Tyler Yates, Redmond probably would have gotten a chance by now, but the emergence of Medlen and Hanson left him to enjoy the charming Atlanta suburb Gwinnett off of scenic Interstate 85. He's a classic Quad-A pitcher, an emergency starter who survives simply by throwing strikes. He'll likely get somewhere between 10 and 20 big-league starts over the next six years with a number of different organizations.
2009 Acquired from the Pirates late in spring training for Tyler Yates, Todd Redmond won Southern League Pitcher of the Year honors in his first full season in Double-A, but his extreme fly-ball rate mutes our optimism for his future.
2008 Todd Redmond performed well at Low-A by spotting his fastball and off-speed pitches, but that strategy didn't work so well in High-A last year.
2007 Redmond had a very effective first full pro season at Hickory after being taken in the 39th round as a draft-and-follow in 2005. He has more command than stuff, throwing a fastball, curve, and changeup for strikes at any point in the count. He profiles as a back of the rotation starter or middle reliever, which makes him one of the better talents in the organization.
