2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a 5x5 (with obp) in which I have a big lead in steals, should I drop Jean Segura for Alexei Ramirez or Jhonny Peralta? I was wondering this before his tragedy, and now I wonder if he will even be able to come back any time soon. Hopefully he and his family can find a way to get through this.
(Hangin on from D.C.)
Yeah, it's just horrific what happened to Segura and his family. Awkwardly shifting to the fantasy angle, I'd go for Peralta if you're looking for non-speed offense. (Paul Sporer)

(Hangin On from D.C.)
I think this was a double question (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-09 12:00:00 (link to chat)Does Nick Gordon wind up an Alexei Ramirez bat? +/-?
(Drew from Mpls)
I think the OBP profile could be better and the power could resemble early-MLB career Ramirez. (Draft Wrap Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)Alexei Ramirez in pts leagues better worse or same as Zobrist ROS?
(tylersnotes from Philly)
I'll go Alexei. I have zero confidence in this. I am an Online Fantasy Baseball Expert. (Ben Carsley)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)All but one of those SS are in the NL. Who will be top five in the AL in 2015?
(Jim from Boston)
Reyes would be #1 followed by Elvis Andrus, Ben Zobrist, Alexei Ramirez, and Asdrubal Cabrera. Yikes...I didn't realize what a drop off there was at SS in the AL compared to previous years. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cardinals are about to sign Kelly Shoppach FYI. The cardinals were supposedly looking for SS but had no luck. Pete Kozma, Ryan Jackson, nor Greg Garcia are the answers so who is?
(Bubba from STL)
I thought Alexei Ramirez made sense for them before the rumors of their interest popped up. It's really hard to find a MLB-quality shortstop out there (which is something that we perhaps don't take into account enough when talking about the Iglesias and Gregorius deals). Maybe they reunite with Brendan Ryan, or Arizona decides to move Cliff Pennington for some reason? I don't know. St. Louis may not have a choice but to roll with what they've got. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2011-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any hope the AL Fans don't elect Jeter to the All-Star game?
(Terry from NJ)
Oh, I would hope not, but there aren't any worthy long-time stars in the AL at shortstop any more, are there? I would expect that Asdrubal Cabrera would get some love from the fans with the Indians leading the division, and maybe Alexei Ramirez. Peralta, Aybar, Andrus. Surely the voters will find someone other than Jeter. (Mike Fast)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)In a NFBC 15 Team (Mixed) format how would you approach the limited SS position?
(bfitzge3 from Upstate NY)
Obviously getting Hanley or Tulo in the early going would be ideal, but I'm leery of the Reyes/Jeter/Rollins group this year for various reasons... too much uncertainty with all three. I'd rather wait a few more rounds and try for a Stephen Drew or Alexei Ramirez, or go a little deeper for Ian Desmond. (Cory Schwartz)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the Cuban refugee card has been played once too many? For every Alexei Ramirez there seem to be a whole lot more that cash the check but never find success in the states.
(JD from AZ)
Perhaps. Same way for every Amare Stoudemire out of high school there were 10 Darius Miles's. Regardless, increasing scouting ability on an international level is a big way to develop a roster or farm system in a not-so-traditional manner and it isn't suddenly going to stop. If anything, I would think teams will be interested in enhancing their scouting overseas in order to do a better job of pinpointing the Alexei's. (Eric Seidman)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)For a year where there weren't any SS to be had, it sure appears like there are a lot of SS to be had. Bartlett, Hardy, Drew, Alexei Ramirez, Jeter!, OCab, then on through to Ian Desmond, Nishioka, Brendan Ryan, Ryan Theriot, and down to Punto, Tejada, Augie Ojada and anyone else. Was it a bad year for SS, or just for decent ones?
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
Some of those names said to be available I just don't quite get -- not that you're wrong in naming them. Why wouldn't a team want to keep guys like Drew or Ramirez, given how rare any offensive production from a shortstop has become? There's a lot of guys out there, but not too many I like.

Going from Ryan to Theriot mystifies me, BTW, because Ryan's glove is a godsend behind all those groundball pitchers in Busch, and it's not like Theriot is Arky Vaughan or something. I can see trying to upgrade on offense, but I'm not convincd the possible improvement at the plate is worth the defensive hit. (Ken Funck)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)With all of the different types of fantasy games out there (roto, sim, scoresheet), what's your favorite and why?
(John from Seattle)
I'm a head-to-head guy, honestly. Roto is great, but I feel like I kind of set that on Sunday and leave it for the week (though I check to make upgrades and such, obviously). Head-to-head is so much more in the moment for me, since I can track it as it goes. This time of year is especially exciting--we had a playoff game in my league decided by Alexei Ramirez driving in a run or not on Sunday night baseball. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Gordon Beckham now a thirdbaseman, or does he ever become a regular up the middle?
(jlebeck66 from WI)
The White Sox absolutely need to get him to SS, preferably, next year. I'd settle for 2B, but simply put, allowing Alexei Ramirez to stand in the way of a clearly superior player is baseball malpractice. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Wieters, Gordan Beckham, are you surprised Beckham's off to the better start?
(john from ct)
A little.

This gives me a chance to follow up on something I wrote the other day, about using Beckham to get Halladay. I really like Gordon Beckham as a player, but if the White Sox are locked into Alexei Ramirez at shortstop, they won't maximize Beckham's value. It is in that case, and that case only, that trading him makes sense. If he's a third baseman, he's good, not great. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the Scotty Pods experiment for the White Sox? Is there anything left in he tank speed wise?
(Ozzie from Chicago)
He's a marginal fifth outfielder.

The White Sox started Brent Lillibridge in CF and Alexei Ramirez at SS last night. Just flipping them would be a nice start. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the problem with Alexei Ramirez?
(Chris from NJ)
This has been stuck in the queue for a calendar year, I presume.

He's not that great at baseball. Good tools that enable him to do some things, but the skills are nowhere to be found. Juan Samuel with less upside. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the ETA on Gordon Beckham. He's been tearing it up in AA. Also, do you see him moving to 2B in the majors? He's still at SS in the minors.
(bam022 from Chicago)
The reason to play him at short is so that you'll move Ramirez to CF, but that presumes Ramirez improves on last year and is better overall than Anderson. I don't think you move Ramirez to 2B, because he's terrible there and the bat doesn't play.

At what point do we scratch our heads and wonder why we're making so many decisions around Alexei Ramirez? Maybe he should be the supersub, starting four days a week at four positions and pinch-running for Jim Thome the other days. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)3 players on the cusp. Nate McClouth - without Bay and Nady behind him, do we expect 2008 final numbers or doulbe the second half? Ervin Santana - Can he repeat last year, or will he be as eratic as in his past? Alexei Ramirez - Soriano-lite or will the MLB pitchers adjust to him this year? Thank you
(BPKevin from NYC)
McLouth is going to be a massive disappointment. His defense was awful, hardware aside, and his season was 30 great days and then generic outfielder thereafter. I like Santana to be a top-15 starter in the AL, right around what he did last year. Ramirez... yeah, Soriano Lite is a decent description. .280/.310/.460 or so. I'm curious as to whether his defense develops at shortstop. If he can't be at least average with the glove somewhere, he can't play. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do I improve my offense in the off season?
(Kenny Williams from California)
Was there anything really wrong with it? It was predicated on the home run and I'd like to see more focus on some on-base guys, but I could say that about 20 teams. A healthy Carlos Quentin, a more experienced Alexei Ramirez, and hope that they can get similar performances from Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye is their big hope. That's going to be a really tough division next year and I think the Sox have more room to improve than most of the other teams there. (Will Carroll)
2008-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Evan Longoria on the DL, do you think White Sox 2B Alexei Ramirez has a chance to win the AL Rookie of the Year?
(Bryan from Manteno, IL)
I don't think he has enough in the stats department to be leading, especially when there are some pitchers with more production than he has around. Galarraga has been very good, and Joba is a media darling, so if Longoria doesn't get it I'd look towards one of those guys. (Marc Normandin)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is this the real Alexei Ramirez?
(AMan from IN)
Probably. He has tools and absolutely no idea what he's doing with them. He reminds me of Shawon Dunston, or the infield version of Jeff Francaeiour. There's almost no way to be a star walking twice a month. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the Indians and Tigers playoff chances going forward? The Sox are anywhere from 55-70 percent favorites from the 3 BP odds reports. That sounds accurate to you?
(colintj from a2)
Given where those three teams are right now and the underlying causes for how they got there, I think that sounds about right. Cleveland has lost Jake Westbrook for the season, they've lost Victor Martinez for awhile, Travis Hafner has joined the ranks of the undead, and Rafael Betancourt is looking pretty clammy and monosyllabic as well. Detroit is out Bonderman already, the rest of their rotation is a mess, we don't know how well their bullpen can hold up, and they have to dig their way out of a sizeable hole. Meanwhile in Chicago we've seen guys like Carlos Quentin, Alexei Ramirez, Gavin Floyd, and John Danks start to deliver on their promise even as the offense in general has underachieved. The Sox lead isn't insurmountable but given the run differentials and the injury situations I'd place my nickel on them. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of playing time can we expect for Alexei Ramirez? Will he be a factor by the 2nd half of the season?
(Daniel from TX)
I'd expect at least 400 PA, especially when Uribe hands back the starting job at second base, so he'll be a factor sooner than the second half. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Jerry Owens plays 162 games and hits lead off for the White Sox how many wins would it cost them? Opposed to Swisher batting lead off and Quentin taking Owens' ABs.
(westy21 from Chicago)
I don't think the White Sox are going to screw around with Jerry Owens too much. They're tired of being cutesy and there are some jobs on the line there. They also like Alexei Ramirez a good deal, who is having a *great* spring, although whether they consider him an outfielder or an infielder isn't quite clear. (Nate Silver)

BP Roundtables

DateRoundtable NameComment
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesHey Joe, Alexei Ramirez ... ahh, you get the point. (Will Carroll)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff Gameshotstatrat (Toronto): Ed Brink-O-Meter Brinkman was the shortstop and MVP of the 1972 division winning Detroit Tigers. His O+S was .538.

To quote Lou Reed, "You know, those were different times."

Griffey hits a non-threatening flyball to left, and Alexei Ramirez now has his own version of an epic at-bat, fouling stuff off left and right. Even if he gets out of this, chances are good the Wheeler won't be available in a close game tommorow, as he has one one so far and is about to throw his 20th pitch off the inning. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesWhat kind of odds could I have gotten that Shield wouldn't walk a guy until the seventh inning, ann that when he did, the batter would be Alexei Ramirez?

100-1? 500-1? (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesMaybe it was just my location or social circle or what, but the whole New Wave thing, or what I came to call "K-Rock music" when I lived in LA, never happened. New Order was a reason to turn off MTV.

We were all early rap and freestyle dance here in NY.

I think I've seen about 70% of Alexei Ramirez's walks this year.

(Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesYinka Double Dare (Chicago): Can you guys talk bad about some other White Sox guys? You called Vazquez underrated and he stunk it up, you ripped Wise being in the lineup and didn't like Richard coming in and both of them have (quite surprisingly) contributed nicely. Say some bad things about the rest of the Sox hitters, will ya?

Alexei Ramirez will be an All-Star next year.

Happy? (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesBill (New Mexico): If the Angels (stupidly, IMO) non-tender Figgins, where does he wind up?

I can't help but think the White Sox might be a fit. Cabrera and Crede both seem outbound, there's talk of moving Alexei Ramirez to short (possibly making room for Chris Getz at second) and they seem a bit diffident about Josh Fields. Figgy and Getz at the top of the order would be an improvement on the current choices, and would certainly give Ozzie room to selectively indulge in the MSM meaning of "Ozzieball." (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameWith that, I know I'm off to make like Mr. Law and whip up something tasty (orange-marinated pork with a mandarin rind-rub), but talk about tremendous additions to the seasons of Floyd and Alexei Ramirez; I wonder what the odds are of the Cubano's adding that all-important fifth rookie slam might be. To everyone who rode out the technical hiccups and chimed in today, many thanks, CK out. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameBil's exactly right... the development of Getz really puts the Sox in a potentially nice situation as far as moving Alexei Ramirez somewhere else on the diamond, should they choose to, and Getz certainly has more upside than Richar. The question's really what was Griffey for, because playing center is something he really shouldn't be attempting at this late date in his career. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameSorry -- family vehicle situation. Had to change a flat tire ... what'd I miss? :)

Great moment for Alexei Ramirez. Have to love what he's been able to do. (Will Carroll)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameWas it just me, or did Alexei Ramirez have his fists in the air before the bat hit the ground? Wow. (Ben Murphy)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In Gamemurraygd13 (MN) wonders, "If you managed the Twins would you give any thought to starting Liriano tomorrow on 3 days rest if need be? He had a short outing last time against the Royals so he should be rested and he would neutralize Pierzynski, Griffey and Thome some. I have an eerie feeling Blackburn could get shelled tomorrow."

I think that's a pretty tough call, in that the Sox have their share of guys who'd really rather face lefties as well: Konkerko, Juan Uribe, Alexei Ramirez, even Dye to some extent. And then you get into questions of how to line up your rotation once/if you win... Blackburn got clobbered his last time on the bump in the Cell, but he did decently his first two times around. Getting routed by the Orioles' or Rays' lineups is a lot different from facing this Sox lineup. (Christina Kahrl)
