2013 Quintanilla is a classic glove-first, bat-second (or eighth?) middle infielder. He was overexposed as a starter for both the O's and Mets for stretches last season—situations neither team was thrilled to find themselves in. Quintanilla raised some eyebrows by reaching double-digit home runs in just under 350 at-bats between Triple-A and the majors last year, but that's the last thing you should expect to carry over this season. His raw power is nil. It's worth noting that he tested positive for performance-enhancers once before, although saying anything more would be pure speculation.
2010 The former Longhorn star spent the entire season as Colorado’s primary middle-infield reserve and managed only 69 plate appearances, which tells you all you need to know about his bat (you would never guess that Omar is a career .312/.374/.450 minor-league hitter). With Barmes on hand to slide over to short when necessary, and Eric Young, Jr. set to strap on the club’s utility belt, Quintanilla became a redundancy. He still has a major-league glove and could wind up at the end of somebody’s bench.
2009 After waiting patiently for his opportunity, Quintanilla finally got his shot at becoming the team's primary utility infielder in 2008, and he flopped. Playing second when Barmes slid over to short for an injured Tulo, Omar had 10 hits in his first 25 at-bats but hit just .216 thereafter, and he doesn't bring enough other skills—including his glove work—to make up for any bat dysfunction. He's a career .313 hitter in the minors, but not even an iota of that has shown up in the majors. For now, the Quintanilla Shake is still the backup at two positions where, for health or performance issues, there is some instability, but he has zero chance of graduating to a larger role.
2008 Omar Quintanilla has good hands and a functioning batting eye. He would be a more useful utility infielder than Barmes.
2007 Quintanilla needed a full season at Triple-A after playing only 13 games there in 2005. He started out slowly but found his groove in May, hitting .347/.405/.500 that month. He was immediately called up, but only played sporadically spelling Barmes and Carroll before a foul ball off his right shin put him on the DL in July. By the time he returned, his bat had gone cold. He has not yet shown the gap power that scouts have predicted, but the Rockies would be well served to put him above Barmes on the depth chart.
2006 Quintanilla came to Colorado in the Kennedy-Witasick-Byrnes deal. The Rockies rushed him to the majors to help replace the injured Clint Barmes. He`s a line-drive hitter and the kind of player who`s not going to take advantage of the thin air, but might be helped by the expansive outfield and wide power alleys of Coors. He obviously still needs some time in the minors before he`s really ready to contribute at the major league level. The Rockies don`t have star talent in the middle infield, and they think he has the tools to stick at short, but Barmes might push him to second.
2005 After a brilliant college career at Texas, Quintanilla was a 2003 supplemental first rounder, so he's supposed to move up fast. On that score, spending most of the year in A-ball was a disappointment. It's anticipated that quick hands and lack of range make him the team's second baseman of the future, but he'll have to first show continued improvement at the plate in a full season at Midland or Sacramento. His first month above A-ball at the end of the season was a good sign, but making contact in Midland is bound to make you look pretty good, and his power in the Cal League is pretty pedestrian after you make allowances for it being a high-octane hitting environment.
