2013 His old 97-mph fastball may not have survived the trip, but Putz has put together consecutive seasons of solid performance at the closing end of Arizona's bullpen. Putz's most devastating weapon is a split-finger fastball that he'll keep in his back pocket until he gets ahead in the count. His control of the strike zone stands out among the league's firemen: The only NL stopper with a better walk rate was the Giants' Sergio Romo. Putz's track record suggests that the plus command could be fleeting, and a checkered injury history has caused the Diamondbacks to be careful with his workloads. The right-hander has not pitched more than 60 innings in a season since 2008, his last in Seattle.
2012 On the first leg of Putz's two-year, $10 million deal, the oft-injured reliever pitched as well as he had since his heyday in Seattle and succeeded in high-leverage spots and appearances on short or no rest, both of which gave him trouble with the White Sox. He did seem poised to fall apart when he missed roughly a month at midseason with elbow inflammation after allowing runs in two consecutive appearances, but he showed no ill effects following his return in late July, pitching to a 0.77 second-half ERA. Any delivery could be his last, but unless his elbow finally gives up the ghost in 2012, his contract will continue to look reasonable compared to those of some of his late-inning counterparts.
2011 Putz's ERA and strikeout rate oversell his success coming back from elbow problems; while it's hard to regard his contributions as disappointing in light of the injuries and ineffectiveness that had plagued his previous two seasons, he proved to be another expensive, unreliable addition, compounding the pen's other hi-Jenks. In addition to his tendency to turn in his best work in low-leverage situations, a big part of the problem was that Putz had to be treated delicately. This worked out well initially, but as problems in the pen crested in August, Putz exacerbated them by breaking down when need drove Guillen to use him without rest between outings in three straight games. Handled with care, Putz can still be a useful part in a deep pen, but questions about his durability make him a poor choice as a pen's save accumulator or lone set-up asset. After signing him to fill their closer void in December, the bullpen-challenged Diamondbacks will attempt to harness his value with kid gloves.
2010 After compiling one of the best relief seasons ever in 2007, Putz regressed significantly the following year, but the Mets were convinced that they had the most dominating bullpen combination in the game after trading for him at the Winter Meetings, with Putz set to set up their new closer, K-Rod, who was himself coming off a record-setting campaign. Unfortunately, this is the Mets chapter of Baseball Prospectus 2010, so if we are writing about a player, chances are good that we're going to talk about an injury, and quite likely, surgery—had the Mets actually won anything, in the future they would have celebrated the campaign by waiving a bloody shirt. After giving up eight runs over a three-game stretch in June, Putz vanished, having been bundled off to the butcher's to undergo what was termed a "minor" elbow procedure. His subsequent plaints of forearm tightness prevented his return. That's the way it went for the Mets in 2009, each injury not merely what it seemed, but a puzzle box, each subsequent layer revealing further damage and decrepitude. Putz's 2010 option having been declined, the White Sox signed him to a one-year deal to serve as Bobby Jenks insurance.
2009 Putz injured his elbow during his first outing last season, and landed on the disabled list. While he didn't require surgery, he struggled to regain his health for much of the season, and didn't appear to be back at full strength until September. Like most victims of elbow woes, Putz's control deserted him, though he retained his strikeout stuff. Part of his decline was attributable to an overcorrection in BABIP, as the flukily low .201 mark he posted in '07 ballooned to .350 last season. After an off-season trade spelled the end of his stay in Seattle, Putz will try to get back on track setting up for Francisco Rodriguez in New York. If he's healthy, he may prove to be the best closer the Mets acquired this off-season.
2008 The pride of Trenton, Michigan (well, after Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays Chloe on 24), Putz was the best reliever in baseball last year according to WXRL. His transformation from a middling relief prospect with a great fastball to a relentless, dominating closer is one of the best stories in the game, but there are a couple of reasons for caution. First, his BABIP was freakishly low last year (second lowest in the majors among pitchers who'd thrown 50 or more innings). Second, his season was bracketed by arm troubles (elbow tightness in March, triceps soreness in September). The arm trouble could turn into something more serious down the road. The BABIP is almost guaranteed to correct itself immediately.
2007 Always a hard thrower, but never much of a success, Putz learned a new grip on his splitfinger fastball from former Mariners closer Eddie Guardado and credited the pitch for the great leap forward he made in 2006. As measured by WXRL, Putz had the best relief season for a Mariner reliever since Bill Caudill in 1982. Whenever someone feels like overpaying for a `proven` free agent closer, they should remember what Putz, Takashi Saito, and Akinori Otsuka did in 2006, or Bobby Jenks and Derrick Turnbow did in 2005--guys who weren`t necessarily considered closers on Opening Day, but who grew into the role as the season progressed.
2006 On the strength of a solid if unspectacular 2005, Putz was slated to set up Eddie Guardado to start the season,. He`s a cheap bullpen option with a mid-90s fastball but only so-so command. Rafael Soriano`s the better talent, so look for Putz to slide down to the 6th and 7th inning before long, with a possible return to set-up duty once Guardado`s traded or his contract runs out.
2005 Here's good news for the busy general manager. Are you having trouble making that off-season blockbuster trade? Throw in what every GM needs, a closer gift certificate from the Seattle Mariners. Available in approximated VORP denominations of 0, 5, 10, and 15, our certificates can be redeemed for whatever size and style of closer best fits a team's needs. General managers will appreciate your thoughtfulness and good taste in selecting a closer gift certificate from the Seattle Mariners. You get one Putz for a 10-VORP certificate, if you were curious.

Took over late in the season as the closer and finished strongly, which makes him an interesting sleeper pick in fantasy leagues, as Guardado's got that shoulder issue.

2013-05-29 18:30:00 (link to chat)What's going on? In a yahoo league rotisserie standard 8 team league. Standard starters with a utility player. We use 2 SP,2RP 3P in general. I really need to make a couple of adjustments. Need to add another pitcher and solid bar to this line up. This league is tough with trades! so would need to rely on the waivers Who should we ditch and is there anyone we should be tracking or picking up? Here is the squad...Here is the squad... Hey coach.

It's always difficult to answer a full blown roster question without having access to everyone else's roster and teams. Generally speaking, your offense looks strong, although in a shallow league under performing players like Weeks should probably be shown the door. On the pitching side, I think that Lincecum is a weak play for an eight-team mixed format. None of the free agents stand out, but Aoki could arguably be added to your squad. (Mike Gianella)
2010-11-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to guess now, who do you think becomes the FA bargain of the offseason? My guess was Kuroda, but his deal was quick and relatively expensive. Dunn the other year was a great example of what I mean.....a good player sitting there at a bargain price for anyone to take later in the offseason.

I was with you on Kuroda. Maybe Magglio Ordonez, who hasn't seemed to generate a buzz commensurate with his offensive abilities. Javier Vazquez might make an NL team happy. The market for late-inning relievers is deep enough that someone like J.J. Putz or Grant Balfour could end up signing a below-market deal. (Ben Lindbergh)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, there are a lot of Pirates fans that are furious over the non-tendering of Matt Capps. While I am not certain he would be worth the $3.5-4M he would receive in arby, I'm wondering if it wasn't worth the risk to accept the arby price tag, hope that he returns to form and then deal him at or before the deadline. Did Huntington screw up, or is there more to this decision than meets the eye?
(karp62 from NY)
Capps really was pretty terrible last season, and at that price, there are usually better buys on the market. If you're holding onto a bounce-back possibility, he's hefty, he's had shoulder issues, and he's two years removed from 2007. Is he going to grow up to be one of the best relievers in the game? That seems unlikely. To put it another way, why pay that for Capps when J.J. Putz signed for less as a free agent? (Christina Kahrl)
