2013 After spending 2011 outside of affiliated ball, Petit made a strong showing in the Venezuelan Winter League, which earned him a minor-league contract and a non-roster invite to Giants camp. He had an outstanding season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Among qualifying pitchers, he ranked in the top five in innings pitched, ERA, and strikeouts and sixth in WHIP. Petit parlayed that success into a September call-up and one start. Be careful overvaluing his stats. That's been a common problem in the past. Petit is a right-handed pitcher with a fastball that sits under 90 mph. He's a cheap emergency starting-pitching option, and that's about it.
2010 Petit is probably going to end up serving as a cautionary tale of how minor-league scouting reports truly add context to the numbers. He barely hits 90 mph on the gun and is very hittable in spite of being able to deceive hitters with his windup. His controllable skill set (walks, strikeouts, and home runs) has led to the consistent overestimation of his the run-prevention ability in the majors. Still, Petit is just 24 years old. Petit may end up earning his keep as a specialist, but he will not be the ace starter his minor-league numbers may have suggested. This figures to be a big year for him; snagged by the Mariners on a waiver claim, he'll have to adapt to pitching in the tougher league, but he'll have the advantages of a fine defense and a bigger ballpark behind him.
2009 Petit has been a huge star in the minors, putting up some silly numbers, but it just hasn't translated well in the big leagues. The reason why? Petit is a guy who succeeds on a highly deceptive delivery and pinpoint control. The problem is, he only throws in the upper 80s, so his strikes are quite hittable. He pitched with equal inconsistency and mediocrity in both starting and relief roles, and while he has value in the big leagues, it's not as any more than an extra arm at the back end of the pen or a rotation.
2008 Petit fires up the stats-versus-scouts debate, as statheads look with enthusiasm upon Petit's youth and collection of excellent ERAs and strikeout rates in the low minors, while scouts warn that he's a changeup pitcher with a funky delivery, mediocre breaking stuff, and no fastball. Lefties crushed him in Triple-A and the majors last year, and while his weak assortment might have gotten him strikes against right-handed bats in the majors, it still landed in the cheap seats with alarming regularity. Add in the usual doubts about short right-handers, and you've got a guy who might only grow up to be staff filler.
2007 As Blaise Pascal once wrote, `We are not yet, we hope to be.` Scouts and statheads disagree on Petit`s long-term potential, so in 2007 the pitcher will serve as one more battlefield in the ongoing struggle between the Calculator and the Clipboard. Petit was his usual walk-stingy self before a May callup, but his strikeout rates have been declining. The theory is that pitchers such as Petit, who rely less on speed than on variety, deception, and movement, get exposed by major league hitters, who are a little harder to fool than their minor league brethren. That theory got a little fuel last year as Petit`s BABIP (.429) and homers (translated rate of 2 per 9 IP) were not good. Petit throws four pitches for strikes, but he`s going to have to get better at the art of prestidigitation and legerdemain if he`s going to succeed in the majors.
