2008 If Peterson knew in 2004 what he knows now, he would have bought in Altoona instead of renting. Back then, he was a highly-regarded prospect whom the Pirates had acquired from the Mets at the trading deadline along with Ty Wigginton for Kris Benson and Jeff Keppinger. Save for three games at Triple-A at the tail end of 2007, he's been in Double-A ever since. Peterson may have finally put Altoona behind him, however, by moving out of the rotation and into the closer's role, in which he excelled.
2005 Notionally the best prospect in the Benson deal, since Wigginton's just a ham n' egger at third, and Bautista was the correction of a previous error. Peterson comes over with the moxie rep, and he's got that big build scouts like. However, he's not a flamethrower, instead relying on spotting his breaking stuff. His mechanics fell apart in time for the Mets (and presumably Rick Peterson) to give him up or give up on him, depending on your point of view, so he's sort of like Scott Kazmir, without the huge upside and with even more doubt.
