2013 When the Tigers grabbed Perry with the 21st pick of the 2008 draft, he was supposed to be on the fast track to ninth-inning work. But even dating back to his days as a collegian at the University of Arizona, Perry’s strikeout numbers have never matched his raw stuff. He throws a high-90s fastball and a slider that flashes wipeout movement, but neither pitch is dependable because of erratic command and wayward mechanics. Acquired by the Nationals for Collin Balester in December 2011, Perry is out of options, so he will need to show substantial progress this spring to stay in the organization. Failing that, another team might gamble on his long-lost upside, stashing Perry in Triple-A and hoping for the best.
2012 Once considered Detroit’s closer-in-waiting, Perry struggled through a subpar 2011 that saw him spend significant time in the minors trying to regain his late-inning mojo. After working on his mechanics in Toledo, Perry returned to post better run-prevention numbers down the stretch and earn his way onto the playoff roster, though his peripherals belied any real improvement. Perry throws hard but his fastball lacks movement and he struggles to command his slider, and last year his walk and strikeout rates tried hard to intersect. Perry’s stuff should lead to better results, but the Tigers grew tired of waiting and shipped him to Washington for the similarly disappointing Collin Balester. Perry's appeal to the Nationals lies mostly in his minor-league options, something Balester lacks, so Perry had best learn to enjoy the journey from Anacostia to Syracuse and back.
2011 Perry spent his second season in the Detroit pen trying to make the most of his big fastball, with mixed results. His heater can reach triple digits but is Jimmy Stewart straight, and most major-league hitters can turn that around if they know where and when to find it. To keep them off-balance Perry mixed in more sliders and changeups, which helped feed a great leap forward against lefty bats. His walk rate also improved dramatically, though he whiffed fewer than his stuff would suggest. If Perry wants to take over ninth-inning chores from Jose Valverde in 2012, he’ll need to amp up the strikeouts to Daniel Schlereth’s level while keeping his walks in check.
2010 Perry is a pure flamethrower, capable of reaching 100 mph on a generous gun. The Tigers' first-round pick in 2008, he impressed Leyland in the spring and made the team despite having less than 15 innings of pro experience. The fairy tale story doesn't just keep going; despite pitching well overall, he did have problems with his control and finding a reliable non-fastball pitch, and ultimately made a few trips to Toledo for remedial work. Tiger officials salivate about having him as their closer. He may yet be a little too raw for the job in 2010, but he's already busted timing expectations.
