2012 Coming off two seasons in which he teetered between inconsistent and ineffective, due in large part to a drop-off in his strikeout rate, Rafael Perez needed to find a way to get by when he could no longer get batters to swing through his stuff. Primarily a two-pitch pitcher, losing the bite on his slider following 2009 was devastating for the once-elite setup man. While the slider isn't what it once was, Perez had himself a consistently good 2011 season by sacrificing a bit of velocity for command. He lost a few more strikeouts in the process, but his walks fell dramatically, and when you're a pitcher who gets as many ground balls as Perez does, you can survive with good control and middling strikeout numbers. He's not the 3.00 ERA pitcher that we saw this year, but he's still a very capable seventh inning reliever.
2011 In 2008, Perez struck out 10.1 batters per nine innings; by 2010, that mark had dropped to 5.3. Stuff is down, right? Wrong. His average fastball was actually half a tick faster than it was in 2008, as was his plus slider. The problem may be an over-reliance on that slider: two years ago, fastballs consisted of half of his pitches, while in 2010, they accounted for just over one-third. He leaned on his breaking pitch so much last year that hitters knew it was coming. The worst aspect of Perez's struggles is that he's not even able to retire same-side hitters: over the last two years, left-handers have hit .352/.413/.474. Right-handers have hit .286/.365/.394, which isn't helpful either; given those splits, it's hard to think of a good reason to bring Perez into a game unless it's to carry the white flag in from the bullpen.
2010 In a bullpen that resembled the cast of The Poseidon Adventure—only with no Gene Hackman to lead them to safety—Perez was the biggest disappointment as far as non-survivors. After 2007 and 2008, Perez seemed like one of the few pitchers they could count on, but he started horribly, recording only five strikeouts against his first 62 batters, with his slider visibly declining from its formerly elite status. Lefties had hit only .222/.300/.299 against him in '08, but took their revenge, hitting .412/.480/.588 in '09. He pitched well during two refresher trips to Triple-A, but continued to get fried extra-crispy in his big-league return engagements. In the absence of an injury, he might seem like a good candidate to bounce back, but it's going to have to be a pretty high bounce to get him back to where he was.
2009 Perez is perhaps the prototypical sinker/slider reliever, mixing equal doses of heaters and hard breakers. He pitched nearly as well as in his rookie campaign, but a return to league average in BABIP hurt his overall numbers. As a left-hander who can get batters on both sides of the plate out and fire for multiple frames at a time, he's an extremely valuable commodity, and the best bet to be the top Indians' set-up man in '09.
2008 Yet another power arm in the bullpen, Perez didn't join the big league squad until late May, then pitched so well that the club wondered why they had waited so long to make the call. Perez is more than a little like Carmona, as he comes at hitters with a mid-90s sinker and then makes them look foolish with a hard, biting slider out of the zone. The Indians pen is really a great thing until you get to Joe Borowski; it's like eating a remarkable meal at the best restaurant in town and having a Twinkie for dessert.
2007 Perez is left-handed and throws hard, and he`ll get plenty off chances because of it. With a low-90s fastball that touches 95 and a nasty slider, Perez has strong stuff and combines it with excellent control. He got a quick cameo in 2006 and has an outside shot at a career something like Mike Stanton`s or Alan Embree`s, that rare high-velocity southpaw set-up man who might even hold his own in a closer role somewhere down the road.
