YearComment
2016 Felipe Paulino's scintillating fastball landed him briefly on the Cubs' 40-man roster last year; his dull everything else ensured no major-league appearances.
2015 Elbow injuries and Tommy John surgery tend to dominate the goddang-all-these-pitchers conversation, but Paulino offers further proof that shoulder injuries are scarier. The 31-year-old missed the vast majority of the 2014 season dealing with shoulder tendinitis, and that's after undergoing surgery last offseason to remove a cyst from his shoulder and clean up his rotator cuff and labrum. It's been two years since Paulino has been healthy or good, and with the White Sox declining his $4 million club option for 2015, it's tough to see him landing another guaranteed contract until he has put at least six healthy weeks together.
2014 Oft-injured FIP darling Felipe Paulino didn't make good on his Internet-sleeper status while he was with the Royals, but the thing about Internet-sleeper status is how resilient it is. Now with the White Sox, he's a sleeper, according to the Internet.
2013 Too bad they don't have those frequent-customer punch cards for Tommy John surgery like they do at your favorite sandwich shop. Because if they did, Paulino's operation would have been free. Paulino was hands down the best Royals starting pitcher through his nine starts, and his removal from the rotation crunched a team already light on starting pitching. Paulino has a violent delivery that made him a ticking time bomb for this type of injury. Like Duffy, the best-case scenario would have him making a few starts at the end of 2013 before contributing in 2014.
2012 Proof that one manís trash is another manís treasure. Last winter, Paulino was shipped from Houston to Colorado (in exchange for Clint Barmes!) and lasted just 14 disastrous innings in the mountains before he was waived by the Rockies. Word was the Royals long had their eye on Paulino, admiring his velocity (he averages 95 mph with his fastball) and his ability to keep the ball down, so once he was available, Dayton Moore snapped him up for cash considerations. He performed much as advertised for the Royals, riding his fastball to career-best strikeout rate and getting a ground ball on 45 percent of all balls in play. The knock on Paulino has always been his spotty command, which reared its ugly head in a couple of starts where he issued at least five bases on balls. If he can find consistency around the strike zone, the Royals will have a bargain on their hands.
2011 The Astros finally ran out of patience with Paulino at the end of 2010 and traded him to the Rockies for infielder Clint Barmes. The righty has the raw ability to be a successful starting pitcher, drawing upon a fastball that sits at 95 mph and reaches 98 with heavy boring action, a hard slider, a hammer curveball, and a serviceable changeup. However, his control has long been lacking, and so has his command, as he leaves too many pitches over the heart of the plate. Perhaps a change of scenery will serve Paulino well after spending his entire 10-year career with the Astros, but the odds are against him as he steps into baseball's toughest pitching environment in Denver.
2010 Paulino is an interesting case. That hideous ERA was caused more by an outlandishly high balls in play average than by Paulino himself; add in a high rate of fly balls becoming home runs, and what you have is either a remarkably unfortunate pitcher or the Cookie Monster's best-ever enabler. As a starter, Paulino's peripherals were good: 87 IP, 81 strikeouts, 29 walks. A converted shortstop with liquid flame for heat and a power curve, he missed almost all of 2008 with a plethora of arm problems and only pitched 35 career innings at Triple-A, so there's not much else to go by. Don't be fooled by the record and the runs allowed; the book on Paulino has yet to be written, but the raw material's a great start, and not just for cookie dough.
2009 Paulino faced four batters in 2008, then became an episode of "House," presenting with a pinched nerve, then elbow tightness, and then shoulder bursitis. He never pitched again. Before his arm trouble, his fastball could hit 100 mph, although it tended to come in flat and high (see his translated home run rates for what happened next). After his arm trouble, well, who knows how hard he'll throw? He didn't pitch this winter, but the Astros believe he'll be fine for the spring.
2008 This big Dominican is the best prospect remaining in the Astros' system, and while he has just one season above A-ball, he may well find himself in the rotation come April. Paulino throws a mid-90s fastball and hard breaking stuff and has the kind of size that lets you project a big workload onto him. He even improved upon moving up to Double-A last year. He's a legitimate mid-rotation prospect.
2007 Owner of the best arm in the Houston minor league system, Paulino touched 98 MPH last year and has lit up three digits on radar guns in the past. Unfortunately, he`s just not a very good pitcher--his fastball is a little bit too true, his curveball is inconsistent, his changeup is just not good, and if all that wasn`t enough, he has problems throwing strikes. Every once in a while, something clicks with pitchers who have this kind of talent, but more often than not it just proves the lesson that man cannot live by fastball alone. Yes, his last name is actually `Paulino del Guidice,` it just doesn`t fit above.

2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see a bounceback year out of Felipe Paulino for the White Sox? Looked strong in 2012 for the Royals.
(Joe from KS)
I'm a Paulino fan. Just hope he can stay healthy. (Ronit Shah)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Felipe Paulino. Any shot at him making good on his lukewarm promise?
(Tom from NJ)
I think so but health is always difficult for us on the outside to evaluate. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Daniel Hudson, Danny Duffy, and Felipe Paulino? Will any have value this year? Who's best long-term?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
No idea this year, wouldn't really waste much time. Hudson long-term. (Paul Sporer)
2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on the 2012 Royals?
(Ryan Glass from The District)
It comes down to their pitching. I can see their young position players taking steps forward, but that rotation needs to carry its weight, too. If Luke Hochevar and Danny Duffy can improve and Felipe Paulino continues to pitch like he did with KC last season then that team looks a lot better than it does now. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Your thoughts on Felipe Paulino would be very much appreciated. Also, is he a breakout candidate and what do you see as his upside?
(thresh50 from boston)
Royals pitching coach Bob McClure has really worked some magic with Paulino in a short period of time. He's got a big arm, which means his ceiling is high. If he can continue to throw strikes, I can see him being a possible No. 2. However, that still remains a big if despite his recent success with the Royals. (John Perrotto)
2010-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think we're seeing a flukey career year from Prado or as he emerged as one of the league's top 2b? I just traded Franklin, Gorzy and De La Rosa for him and Felipe Paulino in a keeper league...
(Adam from Rochester)
I think it's a career year, but that's not the same thing as a fluke. It's the best year of a very good player's career. You can safely file him near the top of any 2b list for the next half-decade or so. (Ken Funck)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Latos and Felipe Paulino? I view them both as sleepers for this year and beyond. Obviously Latos has more upside but I feel Paulino's surface stats are worse than they should have been due to bad luck...
(Steve from Detroit)
I spent $9 on Latos even though I shouldn't have because I'm convinced he'll be San Diego's best starter once he's in the rotation. Love Latos.

Listening to Megadeth, "Rust in Peace". It's a metal kind of day. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)What the insert expletive are the astros going to do about their pitching staff besides trying to run Roy Oswalt out for 300 innings? Does there even seem to be some semblance of a plan?
(matt from austin)
They're going to put on rose-tinted glasses, hope that Wandy Rodriguez continues to develop (he lopped nearly 2 runs off his PERA last year, suggesting that his gains were real enough), hope that Felipe Paulino pitches like a guy who's one of the top two prospects in a system that's much stronger than Houston, hope that Brandon Backe's elbow continues to hold together, and that Woody Williams can pitch like it's 2003 and preserve the team's ball budget... are you detecting a trend here? (Jay Jaffe)
