2012 Pauley came to the Tigers as part of the Doug Fister trade, and quickly proved that his productive half-season in Seattle’s 'pen was an optical illusion produced by a rare intersection of defense, ballpark spaciousness, swamp gas, and ball lightning. His low-velo mix can fool some of the people some of the time, but few of those people are paid to hit in the American League, meaning Pauley’s primary value to the Tigers will be as a walking, talking insurance policy stashed in the organization’s Toledo filing cabinet.
2011 The cellar-dwelling Orioles never found room for Pauley in 2009, but Seattle allowed him over 90 innings last season, which might convey some sense of what it meant to be a Mariners fan in 2010. The soft-tossing righty keeps the ball on the ground, but lacks both a strikeout pitch and the pinpoint control required to survive without one. Strong defense and a pitcher’s park kept his performance suitable for viewing by primetime audiences, but awarding that many starts to a pitcher like Pauley is a clear sign that an organization’s plan has either gone wrong or was flawed to begin with. Call it the Pauley Exclusion Principle: any team that devotes a roster spot to David Pauley for large portions of the regular season will find itself excluded from the playoffs.
2010 David Pauley has spent the last four years at Triple-A, and even the Orioles never got desperate enough to call him up last year—although they did really, really think about it.
2009 Pauley is one of Boston's "Break Glass in Case of Emergency" starters in Pawtucket, and he was called up for the first time since 2006 with predictably disastrous results. He has been average at best in Pawtucket—those 2008 numbers lose a bit of their gloss when you realize this is his third go-round in Rhode Island. Yes, Pauley has barely been given a sniff of the majors during his time in the organization, but between his ho-hum minor league campaigns and his awful stints in Boston, he has not earned much more than that.
2008 Command lefty David Pauley needs a trade to see if his number-four starter act will play in the majors.
2007 Not ready for prime time yet, this unheralded righty was acquired from the Padres in the Jay Payton-Dave Roberts deal. Pauley has no dominant out-pitch, but he mixes an excellent sinker with a moving low-90s fastball, a good curve, and a pretty good changeup, all of which he throws for strikes. Too many strikes, in fact; he doesn`t miss enough bats, and for a pitcher with groundball tendencies, his stat line suffers from a serious gopher infestation. He`ll try to work it out at Pawtucket.
2006 Part of the return for Dave Roberts last winter, Pauley put in a solid season in his first look at Double-A. He throws a high 80s fastball and changeup, but often relies on a big curve as his out pitch. He looks like a back-of-the-rotation guy. He will likely spend the season in Pawtucket getting ready, but there are a lot of starters ahead of him in the system.
