2007 Abraham Nu?ez--the former Royals outfielder, not the current Phillies infielder--hit .223 and slugged .419 in Fresno before serving a 50-game suspension for taking performance-enhancing drugs. He then hit .341 and slugged .578 after coming back, which isn`t what you`d expect given that his batteries had been taken out.
2005 Nunez was once considered one of the best outfield prospects in the game, but that was before his birth date was moved back three years. Acquired for Rudy Seanez, the Royals saw him as a possible Mark Whiten-type, not a star, but valuable as a player who could switch-hit, draw walks, hit the occasional homer, and kill baserunners with an excellent arm. His two-month audition dashed those hopes, to the point that they had him bat exclusively right-handed in winter ball, then enrolled him with Athletes Performance in Arizona to bulk him up for this season. A career as a caddy for a mediocre left-handed hitter like Terrence Long is probably his upside.
2003 With Juan Pierre in the fold long-term, Nunez is going to have a hard time sneaking onto the major league team. He doesn’t make much contact even in Triple-A, and the extra two years tacked onto his age this year really hurt his reasonably expected development.
2002 He's finally healthy again after the shoulder problem that kept him from playing the field in 2000. Even though he's had two lost seasons, he's still just 22 years old, and he walked 83 times in Double-A last year. He'll put up some very good numbers in Calgary, and he provides insurance against Cliff Floyd walking away after the season. Matt Mantei keeps on giving.
2001 Abraham Nunez is the best position prospect on the Fish Farm, and, like nearly all the others, is the product of a trade. Dombrowski selected him as the PNTBL from the list Arizona submitted in the Matt Mantei trade after the Marlins' original choice, Steve Randolph, was determined to be damaged goods. Talk about dumb luck. Nunez is a John Sickels "Seven Skills" player, though a torn shoulder muscle limited him to DH for all but the final week of last season and caused him to be shuttled between Portland and Brevard County depending on which team was playing an AL affiliate. He’ll probably start the year in the Eastern League but should get a September look-see in Miami.
2000 Nunez may be the best of Diamondbacks’ Latin American Coordinator Junior Noboa’s prospect parade. He was rated the #2 prospect in the California League last year by Baseball America, ahead of teammate Jack Cust. Unlike Cust, he’s good defensively. Just when you thought the Mantei trade couldn’t get any worse, the Diamondbacks made Nunez the last player in the deal in December. He has a better opportunity for rapid advancement with the Fish.
