DateQuestionAnswer
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)In the interests of improving, were there any warning signs that I should have paid more attention to before I drafted Ivan Nova on the weekend before opening day? Seems like you were optimistic in the Starting Pitchers Guide and he pitched fine during spring training, but maybe I missed something.
(Michael from Detroit, MI)
I'm honestly chalking it up to injury with that one. We just can't know how much of the struggles were injury related before the UCL finally gave out. He wasn't himself in any of the four outings. (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the best chance to increase their K% and their Swinging Strike % in the upcoming year? Can you rank them? Dan Straily, Jarrod Parker, Ivan Nova, Kris Medlen, Garrett Richards, Dillon Gee, and finally Rick Porcello.
(allangustafson from Fun Diego )
I'll rank based on who I like the most, as I'm not sure on the potential % increases in either category: Parker, Nova, Medlen, Gee, Porcello, Richards. I think Parker is the clear #1 in this grouping, and I'm a big fan of Nova in 2014. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-10-28 18:00:00 (link to chat)Sneaky pitches who could finish top 20 next year?
(Shawnykid23 from Ct)
Ivan Nova struck out 116 batters in 139 1/3 innings. He should pitch a full season next year and should be a solid option. In shallower leagues, Marco Estrada is another guy people might sleep on who could take a big step forward next year. 118 strikeouts in 128 innings. See the pattern here? I like targeting guys with high K rates who didn't pitch a full season as sleepers. Look for pitchers like this if you're looking to score big. You might miss out on 2014's version of Travis Wood, but those guys are so hard to spot without a crystal ball. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Ivan Nova can build off his late season success? Thanks!
(Derek from Kansas City)
I sure do. 2012 was probably the outlier (lots of gopher balls). He's using his curveball more and more and added sinker. A bright spot for the Yankees heading into 2014. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Mike how would you rank the following(Please not just the way you have them)Parker,Haren,Nova,Leake,,and Tyson Ross. Thanks
(Chesty from New Bern,NC)
I would go Ivan Nova, Mike Leake, Jarrod Parker, Tyson Ross, and Dan Haren for this year. Nova might not be the best of the bunch, but I feel like you have to ride the streak. Leake is "due" to slip, but isn't that bad. Parker is a little too HR prone for my taste. Ross might actually be better, but I'd like to see more before ranking him higher. I don't trust Haren right now. Flashes of brilliance, but the HR tendencies tell me to lay off. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)I hate the Yankees, but man am I fascinated by their pitching staff. What Hiroki Kuroda is doing at his age isn't done by very many, is it? It seems to me like scares related to Sabathia are just media-microscope foolishness -- shouldn't the real narrative be that the surgery was relatively minor and the velo might be a case of him taking it easy, a'la Verlander, until he and the weather warm to the season? And whither Ivan Nova? I'm dying to see the arsenal addition, but they took the opportunity to skip him.
(smallflowers from (undisclosed black site))
Hey smallflowers, thanks for joining us. Yeah, Kuroda has had a great career since coming to North America. His age 33-38 seasons compare well with those of another former Yankees hurler, David Cone. As for the media stuff, that seems to happen sometimes in New York. BTW, while looking up Cone's numbers, I realized he's younger than Jamie Moyer. (Geoff Young)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ivan Nova live up to some of the hype this year?
(Raul from Turning Stone Casino)
Has he been all that hyped? I thought he kinda popped up in '11 with the big Win-streak, but not many saw him as a stud. Then last year he showed better K & BB skills, but gave up far too many HRs. If he can combine the goods of 2011 and 2012, he could be huge. Iím always nervous with home run issues because they can lead to implosions very quickly. (Paul Sporer)
2013-03-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a mechanical adjustment Ivan Nova needs to make?
(Alex from Anaheim)
I think that Nova's delivery is pretty solid, and though every pitcher could make some sort of mechanical improvements, his baseline mechanics are a point in his favor. He could use some more timing consistency, but so could every pitcher, and Nova is at the age where a lot of hurlers begin to harness their repertoire with better timing and command. If he can follow that pattern, then Nova will take the appropriate steps forward this season.

On the jukebox: Sublime, "40 oz to Freedom" (Doug Thorburn)
2012-12-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Despite the disappointments, Ivan Nova had some strong starts in 2012. Can he be a serviceable starter next season?
(Alex from Anaheim)
He certainly *can* be more than serviceable, and I like all of the trend lines on his stat sheet as well as his development with his mechanics. With R.A. Wagman's question in mind, Nova already possesses outstanding balance and posture, but his momentum is lacking, and I would address the problem by encouraging some extra burst (while maintaining balance), which could add a tick to his fastball while bringing him closer to the plate.

On the jukebox: Kyuss, "Mudfly" (Doug Thorburn)
2012-07-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Ivan Nova just having a good run, or is stardom in his future?
(Alex from Anaheim)
As is often the case, the answer to this is somewhere in between. I think Nova lasts as a quality, mid-rotation starter for the Yankees, which isn't exactly stardom but still makes him a very valuable player. One thing that was particularly impressive about his outing last night was his ability to pitch off the curveball. If he can continue to do that down the road and rein in his bloated home run rate, this is far more than just a good run. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-06-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ivan Nova has improved lately. Can he sustain this success?
(Alex from Anaheim)
R.J. covered this pretty well yesterday:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17310

I'm a little skeptical that working backward is a longterm panacea. There are so many moving parts to the pitcher/hitter matchup that I think no plan can often be as effective (or at least as uncomfortable to the hitter) as a great plan. Nova's got plenty to hang around as a pretty good pitcher for a long time, but I don't expect any big steps forward. (Sam Miller)
2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the Yankees should do with Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett, assuming Ivan Nova gets a spot in the rotation?
(PJ from Bronx)
You'd think Nova would have earned the spot, though I'm skeptical of his ability to repeat given his low strikeout rate (unless the new ground ball effects persist). Hughes seems likely for the bullpen, and at this point maybe you have to stop thinking about what he was or might have been and accept what he is. I think they really have to look at Burnett as a sunk cost and make him someone else's problem. (Steven Goldman)
2011-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Steven. I'm a big Yankees, like I know you are, and I was just thinking about some of the trade rumors swirling around the Yankees, especially Zambrano. Why in the world would we take Zambrano and his 37.25 million dollars over the next two years, when we already have a rotation that's too crowded to begin with! Ivan Nova was just sent down for that very reason. If we really want starting pitching, we can wait for this offseason, when CJ Wilson and Chris Carpenter, or even lower end options like Joel Pineiro and Edwin Jackson will be available, for a lot less might I add. I just don't think now's the time for Big Z in the Big Apple. Your Thoughts?
(Big Bob from Indianapolis)
I know I'm a crazy dreamer, but I'd rather see some of the internal options, starting with the two guys at Double-A, Betances and Banuelos, get a shot before any of the mediocre options you just named. (Steven Goldman)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ivan Nova, is he underrated? 6'4, 200 pounders who throw in the mid to high 90's are usually talked about more.
(Ryan from NYC)
Nova is not mid to high 90s when he starts, he's more 92-94 with solid but unspectacular secondary pitches. And with all that, I still like him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming Pettitte retires, what do you think will happen to the Yankees rotation? A lot of Ivan Nova and Sergio "Valente" Mitre? The Freddy Garcia Granny Gooden Show? Cashman relenting and trying Joba as a starter? Any chance any candidates among hyped prospects gets called up in the 2nd half after a strong showing in AA?
(Nick Stone from New York City)
Hey Nick! Shifting gears away from the Hall for the next few questions...

If I had to guess I think that barring a winter trade, the Yankees will begin the season by rounding out their rotation with one outside acquisition (Garcia and Jeremy Bonderman being the most obvious options but hardly the only ones) and Nova or Mitre in the five spot, with the other and David Phelps the next lines of defense in case either of those slots need to be filled. Once those possibilities are exhausted, barring some other hotshot from the minors making a case ó†and I don't think any of the three Killer B's are within half a season's range given that they don't even have much Double-A experience - that's when I think the Yankees will make a major move. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do the Yankees do about their postseason rotation? Do they dare start either Vazquez or Burnett? Do they put their faith in Ivan Nova? Does the strategy change depending upon who they're playing?
(Babe Herman from Brooklyn)
At least for the ALDS, Sabathia, Pettitte, Hughes, with Game Four pending 2-1/1-2 situation. Given the off day that follows, I'm OK with starting Burnett on a crazy quick hook. Or really anyone; it's Johnny Wholestaff day. (Joe Sheehan)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any reason to be worried about Yankees starting pitching come playoff time? Pettitte health, A.J. being A.J., Phil's fall off a cliff, etc? Or am I just overreacting because of how piss poor they played this past week?
(Dick Whitman from Cubicle of Awesome)
I think there's plenty of reason for concern. The Yankee rotation's ERA since the All-Star break is 5.11, and CC Sabathia is the only experienced pitcher who's healthy and pitching up to his skill level. Hughes (5.37), Burnett (5.82) and Vazquez (6.20) have all been awful for the most part, and while Ivan Nova's shown promise, he's got just four big-league starts under his belt. To play deep into October, the Yankees need Pettitte to come back strong AND they need at least one of the aforementioned trio to get their [expletive deleted] together.

On the other hand, their bullpen has rounded into shape, as I wrote at Pinstriped Bible on Friday (http://www.pinstripedbible.com/2010/09/10/good-wood/). (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Yankees fans know what they're getting in Sergio Mitre (the equivalent of a swingman for a non-contending team). Other than experience, is he really a better option than trying out Ivan Nova or even Hector Noesi?
(Ethan from NYC)
What the Yankees need to do is lock in wins. Mitre, for all of his faults, has a narrower band of projected performance than almost any minor league pitcher would. From that standpoint, I think the decision makes sense. They can wait Pettitte's absence out. (Tommy Bennett)
