2011 A lot can go wrong from a mechanical standpoint when you stand 6-foot-8, and a cursory glance at Nippert’s stat line reveals that his mechanical inconsistency contributed to a problematic 5.4 walks per nine innings last season. Despite owning a starter’s arsenal that features a plus fastball, quality curve, and better-than-you-think changeup, Nippert was relegated to low-leverage bullpen duty, pushed down the late-inning waiting list by power arms Ogando, Francisco, and Feliz. With more such high-upside arms on their way to Arlington, and—thanks to his Super Two status—an early introduction to the wonders of salary arbitration weighing down his bargain potential, Nippert’s Texas tenure ended when he was non-tendered in December.
2010 After missing the first half with a back injury, the big swingman swung back into action in July, bouncing back and forth between the rotation and pen as needed, and never really struggling in either role. A prospect upon a time in his own right equipped with solid enough stuff, he isn't a forgotten man as much as handy utility pitcher. He's not someone especially likely to wind up in a high-leverage role in the pen or win a rotation spot, but very likely to wind up contributing to both units. Between the ever-fragile Harden and lefties Derek Holland, C.J. Wilson, and Matt Harrison, it's easy to envision him sponging up a few middle-inning assignments while providing an effective in-game change of pace.
2009 Snagged from the Snakes at the end of spring training, Nippert had an initial opportunity to stick in the pen but punted, spent two months starting for Oklahoma, came back to cool his jets for a six-week stint doing long relief after other people's disasterpieces, and then got a six-start audition for the rotation. It's a reflection of the local state of affairs that he managed one quality start in his six, and the Rangers thought that showed promise. Even so, there's enough upside here to keep him in mind for the rotation picture—low-90s heat and a plus curve capture the imagination very easily, and if you wrap it up in a Nippert-sized package, people stay interested.
2008 Nipper's power curve flattens out at times, and there's concern that he isn't aggressive enough with his fastball, strange as that may seem for a guy this big. That might mean he's better off staying in the pen, where mid-90s heat and a sometime plus bender can be enough; he might even grow into a great big-league reliever. Still, it's worth wondering if putting him in a park with a more spacious outfield would give you a poor man's version of San Diego's Chris Young.
2007 Nippert was fully recovered from his 2004 Tommy John surgery last year, so his season should be considered a positive in that regard, but there was a pretty big disparity between what he did in the minors and what he did in his brief time in the majors. Nippert`s a big boy who can pump gas in the 90s, but he has a reputation for being a nibbler, as well as someone who has problems repeating his delivery and retaining his command. The Diamondbacks are hoping he can build on his PCL playoff performance, in which he was pretty untouchable.
2006 Came back from Tommy John surgery with some success, as his walk rate was just about average at Tennessee before his September cup of coffee, which was not so good. He throws hard, keeps the ball down, and at 6`7", is a scary-looking fellow on the mound. A rotation featuring Nippert and Brandon Webb is well on its way to being freakishly big.
2005 The Dbacks added Nippert to the 40-man roster just before the Rule 5 Draft, so apparently, they're pretty sanguine about the prospects of a full recovery from his elbow troubles. Nippert's numbers in the minors have been mostly excellent—check out those strikeout and home-run rates—and he's got good movement on his stuff. Probably going to be 2006 before he makes any noise in the majors, but he could be a good one.
