BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Maybe the expectations were unjustly high from the startóbig things were expected given his inclusion in 2008's Johan Santana tradeóbut Mulvey has shown no signs of developing into a reliable starter or reliever. His repertoire isn't deep enough to confuse hitters multiple times through the order, and the decay of his high ground-ball rate leaves him without much to offer. Rare are the pitchers who succeed strictly with command, which is about all Mulvey brings to the table these days.
2010 After acquiring Mulvey as part of the package for Johan Santana, Twins GM Bill Smith was expected to provide plenty of developmental slack to prove that he got a substantial return for one of baseball's best hurlers. Less than two years later, Mulvey's stock had plummeted to the point that the Twins shipped him to Arizona for Jon Rauch. A severe dropoff in grounders and the subsequent uptick in gopher balls relocated Mulvey from the generic strike-thrower bin into prospect limbo. It's worth the D'backs' while to see if his old ground-balling ways will reassert themselves but lacking that attribute he lacks the abilities to be even a solid bullpen option.
2009 Yet another gift received for Santana, Mulvey was already the quintessential Twins pitcher, a guy with average stuff and above-average control who does just enough to get by. Last season largely brought more of the same, with the troubling development that his ground-ball rate plummeted, resulting in four times as many home runs allowed in about the same number of innings. This spring finds the generic Mulvey waiting for one of the generic pitchers in front of him to yield a spot somewhere on the staff, in the rotation or in middle relief.
2008 The Mets top pick out of Villanova in 2006, Mulvey made his full-season debut in Double-A last year and more than held his own, finishing in the Eastern League's top five in ERA. As exciting as that might make him sound, he's just not that good. He's not much more than a generic right-hander who throws strikes with a selection of average pitches and offers little in the way of projection. He'll be at Triple-A this year, and will probably be toward the front of the queue for a call up as an emergency starter, but he's no future stalwart.
2007 Kevin Mulvey made it to Double-A in his first year on his Villanova polish; at the moment, he`s got a fastball that averages in the low-90s, and his slider, curve, and changeup are already solid. Still, that was a bit aggressive on the part of the organization, and Mulvey could have a lower posting at the start of this season.

2010-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on Johan Santana? I find the thought of his career prospects at this point very depressing.
(Will from Mactaquac)
So do I. The declining velocity and strikeout rate didn't bode well even before we knew about the injury. I'm not sure whether identifying a possible cause for that performance improves his outlook at all, considering the injury, but either way, things don't look great, and that's a shame.

I'm tempted to applaud Brian Cashman for holding onto his prospects and signing Sabathia instead, but then again, the Mets got Santana for Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, and Kevin Mulvey (okay, and Deolis Guerra). The money hurts more. (Ben Lindbergh)
