2014 Clayton Mortensen was acquired by the Royals from the Red Sox at the end of August for Quintin Berry. With the Royals' bullpen depth, he's only organizational filler.
2013 Boston dumped Marco Scutaro’s salary on the Rockies, and got a strikeout-per-inning reliever in return in Mortensen during his brief stint. That was surprising, as Mortensen is known more for his groundball skills and mediocre velocity. A lack of strikeouts was always the thing that held him back. Whether he can repeat the feat in another go-around in Boston is a legitimate question. He is out of options and the Sox bullpen is like a toy store the night before Christmas; he may not get the chance.
2012 Clayton Mortensen posted some of the most brutal numbers you will ever see from a pitcher at Triple-A Colorado Springs last year, making his decent showing in limited time with the big club seem like a fluke. There is no upside here.
2011 Angular righty Clayton Mortensen has intriguing ground-ball rates, but scouts wonder if he can miss enough bats to survive in the big leagues.
2010 Mortensen was part of the package that Oakland received in the Holliday trade, but after his six major-league games with the A's, there's no clear path to the seventh. He has a big-league sinker, but his strikeout rate has nearly halved as he's moved up the minor-league ladder, and in the majors it dropped to the point of absolutely unacceptable, which is the baseball version of absolute zero. Scouts think Moretensen's one notable skill has a chance of working out in a situational relief role, but his days as a starter could be over.
2009 Mortensen was drafted as a college senior out of Gonzaga two years ago, and was moved up a bit aggressively last season, skipping over High-A to open the season at Springfield, and then getting promoted again despite mediocre results. His sinker was perhaps the best in the system coming into the year, but it failed to do much sinking in Triple-A; he'll repeat the level in 2009, but will be one of the first pitchers called upon as need arises.
2008 Few college pitchers saw their stock rise faster last spring than Mortensen, whose sinker seems to defy physics at times. That's not to say that it travels backwards in time (some guy in Korea has that pitch), but that its drop is amazingly hard. He continued to dazzle in his professional debut posting a GB/FB rate better than 3-to-1 while also striking out more than a batter per inning. The only caveat is that he spent a full four years in college, so he opens the season as a 23-year-old with limited experience, but solid upside.
