BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Juan Morillo keeps bouncing around because of his upper-90s fastball, but he has little command and no second pitch; he's bouncing all the way to Japan for 2010.
2009 In principle, Morillo could be a big-league closer. Not only does he have the best pure arm in the organization, it's one of the best in all of baseball. He routinely hits 100 mph, sits at 97-99, and one scout has clocked him as high as 103 in the past. That said, this is baseball, not speed trials or the Olympics. The fastball is as straight as an arrow, he has no idea where it's going when it comes out of his hand, and he's yet to find anything close to a reliable secondary offering, as his upper-80s slider is a flat, sweepy pitch. Morillo is a cautionary tale on wasted talent and the futility of trying to live on velocity alone.
2008 The Rockies' decision to convert the flame-throwing Morillo to relief last year paid off, as the Dominican adapted well to shorter outings, improving all of his rate stats and staying healthy in the new role. While the Rockies have many relief options, Morillo is the one with the best chance to be a dominant short man given his high-90s fastball and good slider. He should arrive in the majors for good this summer.
2007 If you took him to a carnival and had him throw for the speed guns there, he could win you a lot of teddy bears. In the real world, he`s far too wild to stick as a starting pitcher. The Rockies will likely try him in the bullpen to see if they can harness his arm for more than just an array of stuffed octopodes.
2006 He`s still wild, but once he stops trying to be cute and realizes that it`s hard to hit a ball going nearly 100, those numbers will drop. He had a good season in winter ball, adding a slider and ironing out his arm speed when throwing his changeup, so he could make a big step forward in 2006. He`s still a long way away and the usual injury caveats apply, but Morillo has a lot of talent and he`s learning to harness it.
