2013 As a high-schooler, Moore elicited comparisons to Chipper Jones. After he was taken eighth overall in 2002, he quickly moved from his high-school position (shortstop) to Chipper's. He spent three seasons in the Cubs farm system, successful but stuck behind Aramis Ramirez. After the 2007 season he was traded for Steve Trachsel. His 2008-11 seasons were forgettable, slipping him from prospect to journeyman, but he seemed to remember how to hit in Oklahoma last year, forcing the Astros to promote him. He'll never be mistaken for Mr. Jones again, but third basemen who bat left-handed are a rarity. Moore has learned to wear many gloves in his travels and showed enough batting chops last year to hold a spot on the big-league bench. In 2013 he'll try to do the same in Oakland.
2012 Despite showing some pop and patience in the minors and being nominally able to cover multiple positions—including second base—Scott Moore is running out of time to latch on as a 25th man.
2011 Scott Moore has decent pop for a would-be utility infielder, but can’t stick because of injury problems and inadequate defense. He moved on to the Cubs on a minor-league deal.
2010 Scott Moore missed his chance to fill-in for a slumping Mora when, for the second year in a row, he tore thumb ligaments early and missed the rest of the season.
2009 It was a lost season for Moore. Although he initially stuck with the Orioles coming out of spring training, he couldn't fill their desperate need for shortstop help and was sent downbay to Norfolk. There, he had to fight knee and hand injuries to stay in the lineup. He'll need every scrap of offense he can muster to get past the fringe player stage, because he's not an asset on defense. Moore and Mora could be a dance team, the waltz being how performances and decisions about each affect the other.
2008 Moore came from the Cubs in the Steve Trachsel trade and got some face time at Camden Yards filling in for a dinged-up Melvin Mora at third base in September. He is what he is: a strikeout-prone, power-hitting lefty who should provide a respectable bat from either infield corner. He's not going to beat out any of the players ahead of him, but some combination of injuries and trades could open up a spot.
2007 Moore has added 35 to 40 points of isolated power to his translation in each of the last three years and made major improvements in his batting average, strikeout rate, and fielding. Unfortunately for Moore, these improvements have coincided with the Cubs signing Aramis Ramirez to a long-term deal. That puts Moore in the position of hoping for an injury, a trade, or a new role as a four-corners utility man. Given the shortage of quality third basemen, he`s a commodity Jim Hendry could and should use in high-stakes barter.
2005 Beat out Kody Kirkland for the third-base job in Lakeland, but that was about all that went his way. It's being said that Moore gained confidence at the plate and in the field, which is scout-speak for not giving up during an awful season. If there's a more credible positive spin, it's that his power is ahead of his other skills.
