2009-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steven: I have two questions. 1) Will Jesus Montero get significant playing time for the Yankees next season? and 2) What are your thoughts on the Obama healthcare debate?
(John Zirinsky from Washington, DC)
I think it's going to take an injury or two, but he might get some turns. They're going to have to get over the idea that DHing a young guy is wasting him. Waiting for a future that might never arrive is the real waste. Take advantage of what you have in the best way possible. I'd love to see them play with him some in the corners (1B/LF/RF) in winter ball and spring training. Maybe they can make him versatile if he's not going to master catching... As for the Obama health care debate, I'm all for reform, but I'm really not happy with some of the things he's done, like promising the drug industry they're only going to take so much of a hit. Real reform would mean allowing the importation of drugs and giving the gov't permission to negotiate bulk purchases. Not hitting those companies means too much emphasis on cutting Medicare spending, which I'm afraid means that seniors end up without needed care. (Steven Goldman)
2009-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can I get exhuberant about Jesus Montero yet? Any chance he hits 9 HRs in spring training and ends up being the DH?
(Tony from Brooklyn, NY)
As I said before, a few things have to happen first -- he has to show he's over his current injury, then he has to perform, then the Yankees have to decide that DHing him won't somehow hurt him. I remain skeptical. (Steven Goldman)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Has Jesus Montero changed any minds about his ability to stay behind the plate? How does his Bat rank amongst prospects? top 5? Top 3? Top?
(DanLong from NYC)
Hit bat definitely ranks among the best around, as far as changing minds defensively, it's maybe gone from "Not A Chance" to "Tiny Glimmer Of Hope". That's about it. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)You're JP Ricciardi. I offer you Jesus Montero, Joba Chamberlain, Brett Gardner, and Edwar Ramirez for Vernon Wells and Roy Halladay.
(Mike from Bronx)
Oh, god yes. Prospects AND $115 million? Are you kidding me? That deal would be insanely great for the Jays.

It would also mean Ricciardi was never around to benefit from it. Ah, moral hazard. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Think Jesus Montero is a good enough catcher (and hitter) to play DH and backup catcher for the Yankees next year? If he's their DH they could probably rotate him, Posada and Cervelli as catcher to use both of their bats and reduce wear and tear on Jorge.
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
You'd have to search far and wide to find anyone who thinks Montero will be a catcher at the major league level, or that it's a good idea to take a raw 20-year-old with his collection of strengths and weaknesses and let him fester on the major league bench. Horrible, horrible idea. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-03-19 15:00:00 (link to chat)Care to play "Fill in the blanks"? Jesus Montero finishes the year playing at the ___ level, and has accumulated ___HR at the combined levels?
(DanLong from Ny)
Again, just as a reminder, Mad-lib style questions are always welcome, and thoroughly enjoyable.

High-A (so young, no need to rush); 16 (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jose Posada's aging quickly and has all the signs of heading to first or out of baseball within the next two years. Given what you've seen what are the odds he'll be replaced behind the plate by Jesus Montero?
(john from ct)
I haven't seen enough, to be honest. Reviews of his defense still aren't great, but the Yankees are wise to stick with Montero at catcher until he 200% proves he won't be minimally acceptable, because though the bat should play well in a corner, it looks even better there, and the corners might be locked up for awhile. I remain intrigued by Austin Romine as an alternative. He had a terrific second half last year playing at the same level as Montero, with better defensive skills. (Steven Goldman)
2009-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)For a position whose only qualification is an ability to hit, how is it that so many AL teams struggle to get passable production out of their DH?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Joe Sheehan did a good column about this just last week. More than 30 years on, there's a stigma as to playing DH, and teams often don't do the obvious thing and stick their best young defensively challenged hitter at the position. I was making this argument to some pals at YES yesterday -- if Jesus Montero is ready in two years, and he's not a catcher, not a left fielder, and first base is blocked, well, who cares? I guarantee you they'll let him rot in the minors before that happens. ...I also wonder if there's a financial element to the decision-making that goes into DH. (Steven Goldman)
2008-10-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why is it that every chat you get a question about Jesus Montero and the SAME answer is provided for all the readers, EVERYTIME?
(David from Sonoma State University, CA)
Because the facts don't change? Am I supposed to suddenly say he's a slap hitting second baseman with 80 speed? (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm catching up here after a meeting... On the Rangers catchers, isn't Teagarden supposed to be a gold-glove caliber backstop? I was under the impression that offensively he had good patience and power but week contact skills (with mad K's) and really isn't near as good as he looks right now but his defensive edge would likely force Salty out from behind the plate.
(Aaron from YYZ)
Yeah, you're right. I stand corrected on Teagarden (who really is related to trombone great Jack Teagarden). I was thinking of, er, Jesus Montero. (Thinks to self, "Yeah, they'll buy that explanation.") My overriding point, that the Rangers need to exploit this surplus, remains. (Steven Goldman)
2008-09-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)Jesus Montero looks like he can be a elite bat in the majors, something the yankees need, but it takes some time for catchers to learn the position. instead of having him split time at catcher and DH, why not have him split time at catcher and LF?
(bill from NJ)
I'd have him play catcher until he absolutely proved he couldn't. Having seen him up close at the Futures Game, there's no shot in hell in can play left field. He's just too big and too slow. I suppose I might try third base before first base, just in the hopes of sustaining some positional value, but I doubt it'd go well, and besides if playing him at third means moving Rodriguez to first at some point, it's kind of a meaningless exercise.

I think teams would be well-served to start looking at catcher the way NFL teams look at running back, where there are more platoon situations than full-time guys. If you can get 80-100 games behind the plate from Montero, that's got a ton of value. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Yanks are smart, and I think Cashman is, and I think (hope) he stays - isn't the wiser move to forget 2009 and prepare for 2010, or even 2011? You don't have to say it - they never would - and its not like attendance will fall, what with the Stadium v2.0 opening . . . Doing this doesn't preclude signing CC or Tex (or both), just being realistic, even if only internally
(Shaun P. from Medway, MA)
Maybe you're right, but I don't know if it will get better by then, because the position guys under contract will be going soft and moldy by then, and who are the position players in the system coming up behind Austin Jackson to replace them? Not that Austin Jackson looks like Mickey Mantle either. Jesus Montero might not be ready by then. There is very little to look forward to in that regard. The Yankees have obviously had some success drafting pitching, but the Yankees couldn't find a position player prospect even if the player had I HAVE BEEN POSSESSED BY LOU GEHRIG'S RESTLESS SOUL floating in fiery letters above his head. I could see Hughes or Kennedy or both suddenly clicking in next year and making things look a lot better, but on the whole I'm not real optimistic about the Decaying Derek Jeter Era. (Steven Goldman)
2008-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jesus Montero sticking at catcher or will he have to move to 1st base down the line?
(Rick from New York)
I've said it before, but I don't know a single person not receiving a paycheck from the Yankees who thinks he can stay at catcher. The good news is: everybody thinks he can hit. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman or Jesus Montero and Almonte?
(Mike from Atlanta)
The side getting Heyward; he's the best prospect in the deal, as I don't see Montero sticking behind the plate. (Jeff Erickson)
2008-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jesus Montero, 80 on the power scale, is certainly mashing the ball, but not many home runs...is his power more of extra base hits, or will he get a hold of the long ball soon? what can we expect?
(Dan from Bored at work)
It's 70+ RAW power. He's only 18 years old, and while seven home runs in 327 at-bats might not thrill year, he does have 23 doubles, and I guarantee you he's not legging out a lot of those. VERY young, and it will come. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)When is Jesus Montero moving to first? I don't think his body is made for catching.
(Philip from Florida)
It's not. He's come a long way defensively though. I don't think it's enough, but give him some credit for doing it. But man o man can he hit. (Kevin Goldstein)
