YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 After A-Rod went down with a fractured hand, the Yankees traded Chad Qualls to Pittsburgh for Casey McGehee, but in light of how McGehee hit over the final two months of the season, Cashman might have been better off asking Qualls to play third. McGehee is now off to Japan for the foreseeable future.
2012 McGehee is not as bad as his 2011 statistics suggest. So the Pirates hope. McGehee, normally a masher of left-handed pitching, stumbled into a .169/.228/.185 line against southpaws in 2011. Should he return to form (defined as his 2010 line of .316/.358/.589 against lefties), the Pirates would have some options to pore over. They could platoon McGehee with Alvarez at third base, demote Alvarez until his conditioning and performance meet their standards, relocate Alvarez to first base, or let McGehee become the everyday first baseman. Now, if McGehee will just do his part to precipitate any of those events.
2011 Cashing a hard-earned paycheck can bring a satisfying sense of accomplishment, but for pure joy it’s hard to beat finding a C-note blowing down the street. That’s essentially what the Brewers have in McGehee, as the former Cub waiver-bait built on his surprising 2009 season to become an above-average starter. McGehee’s 62 extra-base hits trailed only David Wright among senior-circuit third basemen, and though his batting average and on-base percentage dropped back to levels more consistent with his minor-league numbers, as long as the power sticks around he will be an asset despite some surprisingly poor glove work. At 28 he’s not due for any great leap forward, but he’s still a year removed from arbitration, and if he can maintain this level of production into his 30s, he’ll remain a wonderfully value-priced complement to the more expensive stars batting in front of him.
2010 When Rickie Weeks went down for the year with a broken wrist in mid-May, McGehee got his first chance at regular playing time in the majors and made the most of it. Always known as a slick glove, the former Cub farmhand used a power stroke unseen in his earlier travails to earn the third-base job and force his way into the Rookie of the Year conversation, all of which was a pleasant surprise. McGehee should rightly enter the season as an everyday player at the hot corner, but with his 2008 power numbers completely out of character and Mat Gamel’s more potent bat looking for a position, the Brewers would be wise to keep him on a short leash. McGehee’s bad defensive numbers at third belie an excellent reputation, and his solid cameo at the keystone hints at a certain untapped positional flexibility. When the clock strikes midnight and the home runs of 2008 disappear in a puff of regression, as seems likely, McGehee will still have a career as a valuable infield reserve.
2009 With slick glove work and a contact-oriented stroke, Casey McGehee could help out on the right bench as a defensive replacement at third and pinch-hitter; that may be in Milwaukee, where he signed after the season.
2007 Casey McGehee has Gold-Glove potential as a third baseman, but hitting enough to force Aramis Ramirez out of the picture is a wee bit beyond his ability.

2011-03-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeremy - While early Pablo Sandoval seems to be back to the old Panda. Thoughts on his numbers for this year in a standard 5x?
(Shane from Miami)
I'll probably target Sandoval. He should get back over .300 and be a top-10 third baseman. Deinitely would take him over Casey McGehee, who's being drafted first on average. (Jeremy Greenhouse)
