BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Better young outfield now and in the future. Gregory Polanco, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte vs. Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Gincarlo Stanton?
(Drew from Rockford, IL)
Pirates now, maybe Marlins next year, Pirates after that. Because are we to assume Stanton stays in Miami? Because with five bazillion trade rumors in the last two years, one of 'em's gotta be true. (Matt Sussman)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Soooo Andrew McCutchen used to be a prospect.....your thoughts on retaliation in baseball? And chances that McCutchen's injury could threaten his season too?
(Kyle from MA)
Man, I could go on a rant here. I'm going to try not to. But here are my thoughts: I hate it. Its dumb. It's archaic. I've heard all kinds of talk about increasing suspensions and things like that but it won't work. It's the machismo within the game that makes players and coaches think it's necessary to throw at guys, and it won't go away until there is a philosophical shift, no matter how many games are at risk. Some coach or player has to have the balls to say "no, I'm not throwing at this guy and it's not because I don't have your back, it's because we're in a freaking pennant race and I'm a good pitcher who we can't afford to have miss a start." Someone has to put some intelligence ahead of just trying to be tough. McCutchen didn't even have a problem with the fact that they threw at him. He was mad that they missed and then pretend like they weren't then hit him. That's dumb. He should have been pissed because his guy didn't hit Goldschmidt on purpose then he gets one in the spine. It's a freaking joke.

So much for not ranting. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)H2H with SB,Ave,Runs,HR,RBI,XBH,I have the 4th pick.Who do you like at that pick from C.Davis,Goldschmidt,McCutcheon.
(Chesty from New Bern ,NC)
Andrew McCutchen
Paul Goldschmidt
Chris Davis

In that order. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)From a fantasy perspective, what is Byron Buxton's floor? Is it B.J. Upton with maybe a better avg? In general, people seem to be against giving up good MLB talent for him, but if that's his floor, and his ceiling is best in baseball, then why not? Smart baseball people are saying he's a generational talent and even if he only reaches 75% talent that's better than most players out there. If a whiff on him still produces pre-2013 B.J. Upton there's a ton of guys already in the MLB I'd be willing to trade for his upside.
(The Dude from Office)
I think his floor is higher than Upton - he has a much better hit tool, and he's faster. I'm beginning to wonder if his floor is Andrew McCutchen or 2011 Jacoby Ellsbury or something. He's absurd. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Mike, ave, runs,hr,RBI,sb,xbh.Top 5 Picks for draft. Thanks as a new member to fantasy I will be interested with the questions and answers .
(Chesty from Mohegan Sun)
Hey Chesty.

This is kind of a copout, but Top 5 with that category added are Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis, Paul Goldschmidt, and Andrew McCutchen. Davis is probably the biggest difference with the XBH category added. I might have kept him out of the Top 5 otherwise. Likewise, McCutchen slips a little for me adding XBH. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Gregory Polanco ultimately become the regular center or rightfielder for the Bucs?
(Paul from DC)
Does he or should he? He probably should, and is the best center fielder of him, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte (which is incredibly high praise), but he wonít push Cutch out of center anytime soon. Thatís what winning an MVP will do for you, and Cutch isnít exactly a slouch out there. (Jeff Moore)
2013-11-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Sam Thanks for the chat always enjoy your truth and a Analysis. Real quick if u were starting a fantasy baseball team who would be top 5-10 guys u would build around??
(Mike from Ri)
1. Mike Trout
2. Bryce Harper
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Miguel Cabrera
5. Robinson Cano

But those are boring answers. If you want to know which players I might target at some point in a draft or auction, I seem to like Harper, Choo, Yan Gomes, Nelson Cruz, and Kyle Seager a bit more than the average person.

This chat is off to a slow start! (Sam Miller)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)What can't Andrew McCutchen do? He's revitalized a franchise, improved his defense, baserunning, and is striking out 5% less than last year, all for $4.5M this year.
(Dave from Pittsburgh from Pittsburgh)
He can do everything and I love him. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)If there was an MLB version of Space Jam staring Sponge Bob and Andrew McCutchen, who would be the rest of the starting lineup?
(SlickFoley from BoomCity)
Is this a joke? You'd only need Cutch and Bugs Bunny: http://www.ussmariner.com/2006/03/12/bugs-bunny-greatest-banned-player-ever/ (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)I have 3 CF in a dynasty league that uses (LF,CF,RF), I can only play two. Out of Andrew McCutchen, Adam Jones, and Billy Hamilton, which would you keep, which would you trade? What's a fair asking price?
(Donnie from Running Errands)
I'd keep McCutchen and Jones but boy oh boy that's a tough/terrible call to have to make on Hamilton right now. If his bat plays in the Majors, he could be the 10s version of Vince Coleman. I'd want a lot for Hamilton, and I think you'd be able to get it. In dynasty, people are all over his ceiling. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I really need a SS and could use upgrades at SP. I own Andrew McCutchen in a league that uses LF/CF/RF. I have been offered Starlin Castro, Ian Kennedy, and Glen Perkins (closer for Min.) for Adam Jones, Billy Hamilton, and Michael Pineda. Should I take this deal?
(Donald from Chicago)
It sounds like you're going for 2013 and this deal really aids your 2013 run so I'm on board with it. Tough to give up that potential of Hamilton, but Castro is a blossoming stud in his own right and I've always like Kennedy. (Paul Sporer)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you have Andrew McCutchen, Adam Jones, and Billy Hamilton and can only player two of them (CF, DH, bench), but could trade one for pitching help (an area of dire need), who do you deal, and who do you target with said player (20 team keeper league, 25 keepers).
(Josh from Tampa)
I'd probably deal Adam Jones of that trio. He is coming off a huge year, but he isn't as valuable as McCutchen. You'd be dealing him at what could be his peak value and filling a need. If you are willing to sacrifice the future some, trading Hamilton is a reasonable decision as well. There is a lot of buzz around him, and rightfully so, but he probably isn't going to help this year. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)What's the worst prediction you made before the 2012 season? Best?
(Berman from Atlanta)
This is a fun one. I'll revisit them all when the smoke clears, but it looks like the worst was that I said the Red Sox would win 93 games and be the #1 wildcard. The best was probably that Andrew McCutchen would lead the NL in at least one of the three versions of WAR/WARP (he's currently got the lead in B-Ref's WAR and is very close in the others). (Bill Parker)
2012-09-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)So, in your expert opinion, would an impersonation of Andrew McCutchen count as satisfying the requirements of International Talk like a Pirate day?
(LAT from Lost Wages)
He is, in fact, a Pirate. I doubt I would recognize a McCutchen impression if I saw one, though. (Colin Wyers)
2012-07-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you are the Pirates (yes, all of them, you're very big) what would you try to do by the deadline?
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
The Pirates are in such an unusual position this year versus, oh, whenever Barry Bonds left. They could use help in any area not covered by Andrew McCutchen, James McDonald, or the bullpen. I'd be looking to upgrading at shortstop and the rotation. I don't have specific names in mind, but that would be my focus. The division, and the entire league, is still pretty wide open. (Geoff Young)
2012-07-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who is going to win the derby?
(Yes We Cain from SF)
I've never had much luck predicting this. My gut tells me Robinson Cano goes back-to-back, but if every instinct I've had is wrong, then the opposite must be right. Cano is a left-handed hitting AL infielder, so it's going to be a right-handed hitting NL outfielder. The pick: Andrew McCutchen. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Kind of a fantasy question, but I'll phrase it in real-world(ish) terms. You're an owner. You get to pick either Andrew McCutchen or Desmond Jennings to play for you next year. Money's not an issue. Who do you choose? (Kinda inspired by learning that, to my surprise, both AM & DJ are 25.)
(David R. from CT)
McCutchen. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rumors are abounding regarding a trade of Andrew McCutchen to Texas for a prospect laden package. If this happened, would Pirates fans have the right to put Neal Huntington's head on a stick? And if so, what sort of package would you imagine the Rangers sending to Pittsburgh?
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
I'm not supposed to talk about the Rangers because it will cause some to go poo-poo in their di-di.

I have no idea about the package, but it would take a guy like Profar, one would assume. It would also take a bunch of other top tier prospects. (Jason Parks)
2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you buy into Andrew McCutchen's power surge? Or is he more a 15-20 HR player moving forward?
(kimi from brooklyn)
I didn't see enough of him over the previous seasons to really mark the improvement from a physical/mechanical standpoint, but he's certainly at an age where he's still rising up to his peak and could make substantial, non-illusory improvements. (Steven Goldman)
2011-08-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for answering my LoMo question! To continue my (natural) obsession with the South Florida teams....I realize it's SSS but Desmond Jennings looks like he's prepared to execute a pretty nice impression of Andrew McCutchen if not Carl Crawford. Thoughts?
(Rob from Alaska)
Thanks for asking your LoMo question! Lets hope he doesn't execute a nice impression of Carl Crawford v.2011 -- but I'm not convinced he's a future superstar, which is what Carl Crawford v.2010 was and Andrew McCutchen v.2012 will be. Jennings is only a few weeks younger than McCutchen, after all, and McCutchen is already a 4-5 win player. Maybe the pertinent question is, will Jennings have a better career than Bossman Junior? (Ken Funck)
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank the following players based on future value as hitters (taking into account their position): Carlos Santana, Andrew McCutchen, Mike Stanton?
(Dennis from LA)
Santana, Stanton, McCutchen (Jason Parks)
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank the following players in terms of their future value as hitters: Carlos Santana, Mike Stanton, and Andrew McCutchen?
(Dennis from LA)
For pure offensive value, I'll say Stanton, Santana, McCutchen. If positional adjustments come into play, Santana jumps to the front of the line. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better fantasy season in '11: Andrew McCutchen or Colby Rasmus? I'm concerned about the Cards re-working Colby's swing so he "hits more singles." WTF?
(Sanders from CT)
McCutchen in 2009: .286/.365/.471, 22 SB. McCutchen in 2010: .286/.365/.449, 33 SB. Both years are very valuable and I actually think his true level of power is in between both of those slugs. He could even step forward this year and be a 20-20 guy. With Rasmus you have a player with a higher ceiling -- I don't see McCutchen being more than a .290/.365/.465 hitter, while Rasmus could be very similar to Jim Edmonds. For next season, however, it really depends on your desire to withstand risk. McCutchen is more of a sure thing, but Rasmus has the higher ceiling. (Eric Seidman)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better keeper next year: Andrew McCutchen or Choo? Are you anticipating any other fighting games more than Marvel vs. Capcom 3?
(Guancous from Silver Spring, MD)
Depends on the price (or if there is a price at all). Going to guess McCutchen costs less in an auction format, so I would give him the nod based on that, but in a straight keeper league I like Choo a whole lot (especially if he can get out from under his military requirements!).

That's tops on my list at present, but only because Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is already out (and amazing). I bought an arcade stick for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, which if you know anything about how I feel about fighting games, is a huge surprise. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What type of player will Andrew McCutchen become - is he more Grady Sizemore, Carl Crawford, or something else?
(adfeit from NYC)
Crawford with fewer steals would be my quick comp, though I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that. I like McCutchen a whole lot though. (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)They shoot pirates, don't they? Anything to look forward to with the 2010 Bucs so I don't do the same?
(frank from vegas)
Well, Pedro Alvarez is up, and while he's off to just a 4-for-35 start, he should be good enough to stick in the majors once he gets his bearings. Neil Walker is taking to the majors as well, and that's worth something, too. I'm less optimistic about Jose Tabata and Brad Lincoln, but they're not hopeless. Andrew McCutchen is a damn fine ballplayer and Lastings Milledge is coming around. It's going to get better. Not immediately, but they're on the right track. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Christina ... thanks for the chat. Are we seeing a decline in the era of star multi-dimensional CFers (decline of Beltran, concerns over Sizemore, seemingly with similar injuries?)
(dianagramr from NYC)
Hi Diane, thanks for popping by. I don't really think that's the case, but maybe it's just my lasting faith in Adam Jones and Andrew McCutchen. It might be too soon to put Desmond Jennings in the conversation, but he's worth keeping in mind as well. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)Andrew McCutchen is quietly having a good start of the season. Is he the Pirates all star this year how much power upside you see in his bat?
(Mike from Utica,NY)
Seems like McCutchen would have to be the Pirates all-star. He's by far outperforming the rest of the team. Tough to say about how much power upside he has because I'm not a scout or anything, but he's 23 so there's some time. Regardless, he's already a great player. This is the kind of guy already that begins the steps to make the Pirates relevant again. (Matt Swartz)
2010-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite and least favorite current Pirates? Why?
(Neal from Pitt)
Andrew McCutchen and Daniel McCutchen. I'll let you figure out why. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe Although I have bought in to the Pirates rebuild approach, it is not making it any easier with their state of play to-date. Am I better off hitting the snooze button until 2011/12, or are there positives in 2010 that I need to focus on. Pls help!
(Frank from Vegas)
Andrew McCutchen is an awfully watchable player. There are a lot of guys pretty much at make-or-break points in their careers...Clement, LaRoche, Cedeno, Milledge...those will be interesting to watch. (Joe Sheehan)
2010-03-24 11:00:00 (link to chat)Long term, which player would you rather have patrolling centerfield, Andrew McCutchen or Desmond Jennings?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
We're playing center field pick 'em, huh? Okay with me. I'll go McCutchen again, and again on track record. Jennings doesn't quite have the power profile that McCutchen does either. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Andrew McCutchen. 2010's great CF, or 2010's greatest CF in the history of the world since Mays. Or somewhere in between?
(strupp from Madison)
The greatest player to ever play for the 2009 Pirates. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)When will the fans get off my back?
(Bob Nutting from Pittsburgh)
When you send me an Andrew McCutchen t-shirt. I wear a medium or a small, thanks. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)The rookie or 2nd year player that you'll be sure to draft in all your leagues is ______________.
(Three cheers for more chat from Boo productivity at work)
Theme of the day: Andrew McCutchen! Is there anyone who covers the game nationally who likes The Cutch more than I do? I'm going to have to find a way to like him more if that's the case. (Marc Normandin)
2009-11-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)I have money to spend but give me 3 reasons on why I should spend money for Pirates games next season.
(Pittsburgh Sports Fan from Pittsburgh)
It's a beautiful ballpark, the front office is doing things that deserve your support even if the short term will suck, and Andrew McCutchen is a legitimate building block. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What has happend to Matt Wieters, is he an Alex Gordon redux? Also out of all the rookies this year, whom do you think will have the best career?
(Mike from Utica,NY)
We can answer that in a couple of ways. Is he like Alex Gordon, in that he's something less than the hype? Yes. Is he like Alex Gordon, in that it's way too soon to give up on him? Also very much yes.

As far as the rookies and the best careers, between Andrew McCutchen, Fowler, Hanson, and Beckham, that's a really hard question to answer. Hanson's the one who makes me really wonder, even with the understanding that pitchers are the least predictable commodities. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)They still have to pick an All Star representative from the Pirates next year, right?
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
Oh, come now, it won't be *that* hard. Beyond the token pitcher-y possibilities, if Doumit stayed healthy, he'd be worthy of consideration. I'd also expect that Andrew McCutchen will make it to the ASG on his own merits someday. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I the best GM in baseball?
(Jack Z from Seattle)
As with All-Stars, I think you need a body of work to gain this title. You are to GMs what Andrew McCutchen is to outfielders: a nice start to what should be a good career. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have a good player comp for Andrew McCutchen? Maybe a Crawford/Milledge combo.
(Neal from Pittsburgh)
If I showed you a career line like this, would you like it or be disappointed?

2009-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much longer do Buc's fans have to suffer through the wilting Moss with "The Franchise" Andrew McCutchen ready to rise?
(Ethan from Berkshire County)
If McCutchen is the franchise, there's problems. He's good, yes, but if you put a slider in a police lineup, he probably couldn't recognize it. I think PECOTA has him right with Shannon Stewart. (Will Carroll)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Gamel gets called up by June 1ish, what type of impact do you anticipate him having? Who else left in the minors should we be excited about seeing this year (not named Price, Weiters).
(corey from boston)
Tommy Hanson, Andrew McCutchen, Neftali Feliz. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)How long do the Buc's keep Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez in the minors?
(Ethan from Berkshire County)
McCutchen should be up by Flag Day. We won't see Alvarez until 2010. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Now that his arbitration hearing is approaching, how do you feel the Pirates have handled contract talks with McLouth? Do you expect a settlement? A long-term deal?
(Breakables from Chicago)
I think the Pirates will only agree to a long-term contract with McLouth on their terms because of the presence of Andrew McCutchen in the organization. As I mentioned earlier, they just might be willing to sell high on McLouth in July if McCutcheon has a good second year at Indianapolis. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Nate Mclouth putting up comparable numbers this year to last year? I think he is an above average player, but his value will never be higher coming off an all star and gold glove season. Would now be a good time to test the trade market for him?
(Matt from Pittsburgh)
I love McLouth as a person and his attitude but I'd consider selling high on him, as well. It's pretty clear he'll have to move to a corner once Andrew McCutchen is ready to play center (sometime during the 2009 season) and McLouth's value will be lower in left or right. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Lastings Milledge has not exactly set the world on fire. Anything to be worried about, or just typical young player's struggles?
(jromero from Seattle)
I never saw the power in Milledge others did (and I can say the same about Andrew McCutchen). However, his complete inability to control the strike zone (48/20 K/BB) is that of a power hitter, so you have a mix that barely belongs on the field. I don't think he's a leadoff hitter, either; more a #2 or #5 guy with doubles, but he has to make more contact and become better about counts. This is where "makeup" becomes less an abstract word and more a concrete question: can the player change? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-01-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on Colby Rasmus and when do you expect him in the majors.
(Mike from St.Louis)
In our celebrity Scoresheet League we ran last season, I drafted Rasmus late in the draft, and then when I needed to trade for a thumper late in the year, I traded Andrew McCutchen for Jim Thome rather than give up Rasmus. So I think he's a stud. If Jay Bruce is Larry Walker, Rasmus is Larry Walker Lite. Just temper your expectations for 2008. (Rany Jazayerli)
2008-01-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay Bruce and Andrew McCutchen, how close are they?
(Manoog from Odessa)
We probably shouldn't be bundling those two together any more. Bruce is like the $300 hotel you stay at, and McCutchen is like the free USA Today that's waiting outside your doorstep. (Nate Silver)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin-thanks for the chat. I recall you saying that you were high on Andrew McCutchen. Can you tell me if you see him as a future 25-30 hr hitter? Does he have 30-30 in him once he reaches the majors?
(raygu1 from NJ)
I see more 20/40 possibilities than 30/30. He's got juice in his bat, but not THAT much juice.

What is up with the Moneyball fanboys? I have like 12 200-word diatribe's on it in the que. Stop it. You're grasping onto old technology. (Kevin Goldstein)
