2009 The 6'6" "Nasty" Tom Mastny is the only big leaguer to be born in Indonesia (where his parents were vacationing). He was sold to Japan's Yokohama BayStars in December, so a return visit to his birthplace just became that much easier.
2008 Mastny is no more than that extra bullpen arm, nor will he ever be any more than that, but that's certainly more than was ever expected of him. A lower-round pick whose claim to fame is being the greatest pitcher in the history of Furman University, Mastny doesn't have much in the way of stuff, but he throws a sinker and uses his height to add even more of a downhill plane to the pitch, and that's good enough to be that extra arm that everyone is looking for.
2007 How many people foresaw Mastny picking up five major league saves last year? Acquired from the Blue Jays a couple of years back for John McDonald, Mastny was always seen as a fringy right-hander. He throws strikes, has a good curve, and his mechanics, aided by a long, six-foot-six frame, create plenty of deception. With a fastball that sits at 88-90 MPH, he doesn`t deserve many more save opportunities, but he`s proven to be good enough to get big league hitters out.
