2007 Martinez-Esteve is a terrific hitter, but that`s about all you can say for him. He`s fragile, averaging a surgery a year (last year it was a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder). Hamstring injuries have taken his legs, while shoulder injuries have sapped his arms. Guys who can`t run or throw are generally not good fielders; add in that he doesn`t seem to care and you have a frightening defensive spectacle. That leads us to his attitude, which has been a turn-off for everyone associated with him in the minors. The Giants almost have to trade him to an AL team, assuming any of them want their DH young, surly, and fragile. 2006 Eddy was an extra-base hitting machine in San Jose this year, and the only thing holding him back from a promotion to Double-A was his shoulder. He had labrum surgery in his throwing arm in the off-season and wasn`t capable of playing the field until the last two months of the minor league`s shorter season. Even with a healthy arm, though, EME isn`t considered a potential asset in left field. A trade to an AL team might be good for Martinez-Esteve but bad for the Giants, who don`t have a lot of hitters of this quality in their system. 2005 The Giants' highest '04 draft pick, Martinez-Esteve finished the season with a flourish in San Jose, albeit in a small sample size. He's got the big-college pedigree (Florida State) and the bat to move up quickly, even moreso when Fred Lewis the only outfielder in the organization likely to be starting in San Francisco by 2007, assuming Bonds has called it quits by then.
